I know way too many folks on the Right that are fighting for our country and for family values, and yet they dont value their own family. Heck, I know several people that are more well known in Tea Party circles than they are at their own kitchen tables. Its gross. I know thats harsh but someones got to say it.
Over the last few years my wife and I have spent more time than wed like listening to haggard tales of marriages that are on the rocks and kids that are jacked up simply because mom or dad were busy saving the world. Yep, some folks pre-occupation with rescuing America has left their children and/or spouses more neglected than Rosie ODonnells Dead Sexy Abs DVD.
In addition to the loss of family, we can also be so entrenched in this fight for the soul of our nation that we not only lose our soul but our health, as well. I dont know about you but Id like to be around once we toss these clowns out of DC. The concerned citizen's" brutal life style of little sleep, junk food and no exercise is a lethal cocktail that I dont want to drink.
So, how can we strike a happy balance? How can we be effective in our efforts, rich in our relationships and not have raccoon eyes and be one tick away from a stroke? Here's five things that I believe will help us combobulate:
1. Learn how to dial down. Turn off the news. Turn off social media. And have your kids hide your cell phone on the weekends. Dear salvation egoist: believe it or not, the world will turn without your monitoring of Twitter and Facebook around the clock. No one was made by God to field this much political slop on a regular basis. Moses father-in-law told old Mo in the book of Exodus that if he didnt chill and delegate then he was going to snap. Look it up. Its science.
2. Get out in nature. I know Im going to sound like an old hippie but, folks, weve got to have a regular dose of the irregular wild to keep us tethered to reality. King David said God restored his soul in green pastures and by still waters and not with Zanax. Thats one of the reasons why I will continue to fish and continue to hunt; at least fish and hunt on private lands and waters not affected by the Shutdown.
3. Watch comedies. A lot of activists are meaner than snakes. Theyve got a snap factor that makes Obama look sedate. Heres an FYI: Youre miserable to be around. Lighten up. Laugh. Be the Churchillean Happy Warrior, por favor. Try not to say communist so often and chuckle a little more.
4. Enjoy your spouse and love on your kids, in person, and not via Skype.
5. Get off your butt and exercise. Get the blood flowing. Drop 20-200lbs. Were going to need you around to help sort this nation out after we get the corrupt-o-crats out of office. And, if for some reason our efforts dont work out, youd better get fit because its the zombie apocalypse and, if you saw World War Z, these new zombies can haul ass.
I think the author should go f himself. :)
good points, I can’t stand people who put the great unwashed ahead of their own families
and divorce is a selfish concept
Yeah, John Adams really could have taken this to heart. He was lucky to have a wife who understood what was going on.
He really should have spent more time with his family and less time shuffling between Philadelphia and Quincy, or Quincy and the European capitals.
Bottom line: This is good advice for activists, non-activists and people of all political stripes. I didn’t care for the column.
I think he already has, and likes it.
Right.
I’ve got family members that I can’t put a contract on for two reasons:
A. It’s illegal.
B. It’s expensive.
Hey Liberal Democrats;
1. Don’t kill babies
2. Don’t spend other peoples money
3. Don’t stick things up your butt
4. Don’t twerk yourself through life
5. Don’t be a pedophile
6. Stop taking illegal drugs
7. Stop trying to kill America
8. Stop thinking you’re better than anyone else.
9. Stop telling me God is dead.... and evil
10.Stop keeping blacks as slaves on the demo-plantation.
11. Stop telling me I’m evil because I believe in hard work
12. Oh What The Hell! You won’t listen anyway... Damn Zombies
In my best Tokyo Rose voice:
Boys go home. Don’t you know what you girl friends and wives up to?
They’re enjoying the boys back home so lay down your arms and go home.
This is an ad hominim attack on American culture by the left. Thay all can go back to their sordid perversions
and can only dream of living a wholesome life.
It truth, every lefty has a seed of longing to be a conservative, but they just do not have the capacity or ability.
We will continue to save our country. And the lefties are
having fits because we are doing it in spite of them, and their control of the media.
I second your motion. The author can indeed go and f himself, royally .
LOL! So true.
The only advice I would give, is get your family involved in your efforts, when you go out to fight take them with you.
We are engrossed in a life or death political war, you can get family, friends and relatives involved, it’s not like going to Iraq or Afghanistan.
In every great struggle there are adverse effects, most of the founding fathers lost everything, but saved their Sacred Honor and our Country.
This is good advice for remaining strong to fight the battles that count.
same, the family I grew up in is all communist
but I am with my kids every evening, cook for them and know what is going on and do for them
I did. Last weekend. Thankyouverymuch, d-bag.
I know a few places nearby that look like that. We spent a few hours last week exploring some of them.
studies have proven that Conservatives are happier than the left.
Its the left that injects politics into everything. They are the permament unhappy.
Why is everybody mad at Giles?
#1 will never be followed by the opposition...loser right there
#2 thru #5 are good ideas....too bad #1 stinks too much.
We can ask him all about it. IF we can pay him $2500 for a speaking engagement with round trip airfare, hotel, meals to/from Ft Lauderdale Fl. or wherever he lives there.
Go read his biosketch and then tell me if this isn’t the pot calling the kettle black....
I don't see anything wrong with the suggestions by Doug Giles
Very well said
Okay, Fine. What would they recommend that doesn't push the gay/liberal agenda and is really funny? If it's on TV, it usually doesn't cut it, and I really tired of stuck in sophomore year humor decades ago.
Whatever happened to pledging "...our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor"?
At least my parents took time to explain what they were doing and why, long ago, before the TEA party, and they were right, then, trying to stop this crap long before it got this far.
You'd be surprised how many people can dangnear recall every line from a comedy, or cite mind-boggling sports stats, who say politics is too complicated.
Bread and circuses win every time...
I think it’s because he comes across as a self-satisfied know-it-all. However, I doubt that he cares what anyone thinks. When a person chooses to present himself that way, he’s thumbing his nose in advance at anyone who doesn’t like it.
No. 5 is snarky.
Drop 20 - 200 lbs. 200 pounds? Sounds like he’s talking about dem voters.
Even in a battle for their lives our founders had their diversions. Washington liked to ride in the wilderness alone with his thoughts. Franklin liked to party. Jefferson liked to ponder philosophy and the state of man in the world.
I could be mistaken, but he has a history of being a bit of a faux conservative in some respects. I have read some of his stuff in the past, and recall that he sounds like Peggy Noonan in some respects, and she is no conservative.
Conservatives don’t mind advice, but whenever that advice comes from liberals or faux conservatives (rinks) we sometimes think it is not being given to “help” us. I don’t think that is the case here, Mr. Giles probably thinks this is sound advice.
Bottom line, this is not bad advice no matter who you are and what you do, but to level this at conservatives seems out of hand to me.
See my post at #28. I think many see his advice as the equivalent of coming from a person like Karl Rove or Steve Schmidt at best, and from the NYT opinion column at worst.
As I said, this is not bad advice no matter who you are. I think it is the source that irritates them.
Danged spell check.
Thank you. I’m sure you must have a good routine for refreshing yourself, as I see you’re always active in fighting the good fight.
Not necessary. I know I need to lose weight
What I was trying to say at post #4, and I think Smokin’ Joe was driving at in his post, is that some things are more important than some other things, but they don’t have to be mutually exclusive.
John Adams is a great example, though maybe not the most appropriate, because his wife was generally on board with him “doing his duty”. During the war, when John Adams was constantly away from his wife and family, it put the strain on them. She didn’t want him to go. The kids didn’t want him to go. And their family life suffered.
But I don’t think anyone could argue that what he did, spending only a fraction of time each year with his family, was wrong. He did what duty required of him.
Someone has to do it. But they don’t have to let it destroy them, and I think that is the point Giles makes.
Diversions are good. Find an outside interest and take a rest from the fight. The fight needs all of us but none of us are any good if its all we are.
Get out and smell the roses and return to the fight refreshed.

You’re right.
“Balance” is the way I describe it.
Keeps us strong and healthy - mentally, physically, and emotionally.
I had to do a search on Steve Schmidt, as I had no idea who he is. Otherwise I agree with you
Why is this pointed at conservatives?
I think it’s so that we CAN continue the fight. Let the Libs, Dems and their ilk burn THEMSELVES out! Let THEM resort to Xanax, Prilosec, and whatever ‘recreational’ drug they want in order to calm them down/keep them going. WE will be the ones refreshed and ready to keep going and WIN the fight!
As for me, I think ALL his suggestions are right on. Even #1. Sometimes, you HAVE to step away from media. If you don’t, you’ll work yourself into a frenzy. Fried, stressed, frazzled patriots are NOT as effective as refreshed and ready patriots.
(And for those who fear that Barry the Boob will foist something on us when they are NOT looking...fear not. Someone, somewhere is ALWAYS watching. Take a break-someone out there has your back. Really.)
Extreme left has a big advantage here because they are thoroughly plugged in with government, schools and media, whereas most conservatives have a life.
Lefties have all the time in the world to be activists because they get money from government directly or indirectly.
Homosexuals for example always seem to have plenty of time, money and influence far beyond their numbers.
If they weren’t so dangerous it would almost be amusing.
Lefties and statists who couldn’t organize a box of cookies are busy organizing entire communities and “interest groups” into harmful power blocks. Now we have one of them in position to “organize” (actually “dis-organize”) the entire country.
You wouldn’t let them clean out your garage, but they want to tell us all how to live.
Yet, the left is winning.
“Disengage... become a recluse... ignore reality... give up on your fight... come to the dark side”.
Hey dougee... I will fight for our way of life and even until death. I will NEVER quit as long as I draw breath. I am not alone giles... and THAT is why WE WILL WIN!
He'd rather do it to us - all his proposals involve ignoring the move towards tyranny in order to "feel more relaxed".
These men were not selfish like many people today and their families understood them and their cause and worked to help them to be successful... they did not go on oprah to complain and cry and they didn't write demoralizing and defeatist propaganda like this article.
Yes family is important... but GOD is above all. GOD gifted us with the sacrifices of those that have come before us. Just think about the unselfish gift of those that have fought for our way of life... from the beginning until today... think of the sacrifices of their families.
I believe that the Holy Spirit touched the hearts and minds of the men that wrote our Constitution in much the same way that the men that wrote the Bible were touched. Sometimes we are called to do the hard thing... sometimes we must sacrifice. Did JESUS not command his Disciples to leave their families and to follow him? Did he not promise that their families would be cared for? Sometimes we must sacrifice for things bigger than ourselves. I believe we are standing on the cusp of those times again.
He should do it in private.
I tend to mind my own business.
Thanks Kaslin. Stop and Smell the Roses ping. And take the whole family along to the next “Impeach Obama” overpass party!

I think of the men who shed blood and lost their life to create and defend this nation.
Now this pecker-head wants to warn us that families will be put under stress if they aren’t careful.
Evidently this guy hasn’t seen the employment figures in a couple of decades. Evidently he hasn’t seen what Obama has wrought.
Families are being screwed up right now idiot-stick! Tea Partiers were not the cause of it either.
Pull you head out for some fresh air once in a while.
You did check to see who the writer of the article is, didn’t you?
Perhaps I should know, but I don’t know who Doug Giles is.
I did look.
He’s the guy, along with that hot looking girl, who made all those abortion clinic expose’ vidoes that Breitbart released over a period of several weeks. Along with a bunch of other videos. Spent time in jail for some of them.
He’s certainly eaned the right to caution people about getting caught up in changing the world.
Nah, he’s earned the right to keep making conservative videos. We pay a small price today compared to what others have paid.
Well, yes he has, but he’s also earned the right to take time for family, and to caution others to do the same.
