Hey,Conservative Activists:While You’re Saving Our Country, Don’t Lose Your Family, Health Or Sanity
Townhall.com ^ | October 13, 2013 | Doug Giles

Posted on 10/13/2013 6:12:35 AM PDT by Kaslin

I know way too many folks on the Right that are fighting for “our country” and for “family values”, and yet they don’t “value” their own family. Heck, I know several people that are more well known in Tea Party circles than they are at their own kitchen tables. It’s gross. I know that’s harsh but … someone’s got to say it.

Over the last few years my wife and I have spent more time than we’d like listening to haggard tales of marriages that are on the rocks and kids that are jacked up simply because mom or dad were busy “saving the world.” Yep, some folks pre-occupation with “rescuing America” has left their children and/or spouses more neglected than Rosie O’Donnell’s Dead Sexy Abs DVD.

In addition to the loss of family, we can also be so entrenched in this fight for the soul of our nation that we not only lose our soul but our health, as well. I don’t know about you but I’d like to be around once we toss these clowns out of DC. The “concerned citizen's" brutal life style of little sleep, junk food and no exercise is a lethal cocktail that I don’t want to drink.

So, how can we strike a happy balance? How can we be effective in our efforts, rich in our relationships and not have raccoon eyes and be one tick away from a stroke? Here's five things that I believe will help us combobulate:

1. Learn how to dial down. Turn off the news. Turn off social media. And have your kids hide your cell phone on the weekends. Dear salvation egoist: believe it or not, the world will turn without your monitoring of Twitter and Facebook around the clock. No one was made by God to field this much political slop on a regular basis. Moses’ father-in-law told old Mo’ in the book of Exodus that if he didn’t chill and delegate then he was going to snap. Look it up. It’s science.

2. Get out in nature. I know I’m going to sound like an old hippie but, folks, we’ve got to have a regular dose of the irregular wild to keep us tethered to reality. King David said God restored his soul in green pastures and by still waters and not with Zanax. That’s one of the reasons why I will continue to fish and continue to hunt; at least fish and hunt on private lands and waters not affected by the Shutdown.

3. Watch comedies. A lot of activists are meaner than snakes. They’ve got a snap factor that makes Obama look sedate. Here’s an FYI: You’re miserable to be around. Lighten up. Laugh. Be the Churchillean “Happy Warrior”, por favor. Try not to say “communist” so often and chuckle a little more.

4. Enjoy your spouse and love on your kids, in person, and not via Skype.

5. Get off your butt and exercise. Get the blood flowing. Drop 20-200lbs. We’re going to need you around to help sort this nation out after we get the corrupt-o-crats out of office. And, if for some reason our efforts don’t work out, you’d better get fit because it’s the zombie apocalypse and, if you saw World War Z, these new zombies can haul ass.

Yeah, John Adams really could have taken this to heart. He was lucky to have a wife who understood what was going on.

He really should have spent more time with his family and less time shuffling between Philadelphia and Quincy, or Quincy and the European capitals.

Bottom line: This is good advice for activists, non-activists and people of all political stripes. I didn’t care for the column.

I’ve got family members that I can’t put a contract on for two reasons:

A. It’s illegal.
B. It’s expensive.

This is an ad hominim attack on American culture by the left. Thay all can go back to their sordid perversions
and can only dream of living a wholesome life.

It truth, every lefty has a seed of longing to be a conservative, but they just do not have the capacity or ability.

We will continue to save our country. And the lefties are
having fits because we are doing it in spite of them, and their control of the media.

I second your motion. The author can indeed go and f himself, royally .

Diversions are good. Find an outside interest and take a rest from the fight. The fight needs all of us but none of us are any good if its all we are.

Get out and smell the roses and return to the fight refreshed.

The only advice I would give, is get your family involved in your efforts, when you go out to fight take them with you.

We are engrossed in a life or death political war, you can get family, friends and relatives involved, it’s not like going to Iraq or Afghanistan.

In every great struggle there are adverse effects, most of the founding fathers lost everything, but saved their Sacred Honor and our Country.

Okay, Fine. What would they recommend that doesn't push the gay/liberal agenda and is really funny? If it's on TV, it usually doesn't cut it, and I really tired of stuck in sophomore year humor decades ago.

Whatever happened to pledging "...our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor"?

At least my parents took time to explain what they were doing and why, long ago, before the TEA party, and they were right, then, trying to stop this crap long before it got this far.

You'd be surprised how many people can dangnear recall every line from a comedy, or cite mind-boggling sports stats, who say politics is too complicated.

Bread and circuses win every time...

Even in a battle for their lives our founders had their diversions. Washington liked to ride in the wilderness alone with his thoughts. Franklin liked to party. Jefferson liked to ponder philosophy and the state of man in the world.

I could be mistaken, but he has a history of being a bit of a faux conservative in some respects. I have read some of his stuff in the past, and recall that he sounds like Peggy Noonan in some respects, and she is no conservative.

Conservatives don’t mind advice, but whenever that advice comes from liberals or faux conservatives (rinks) we sometimes think it is not being given to “help” us. I don’t think that is the case here, Mr. Giles probably thinks this is sound advice.

Bottom line, this is not bad advice no matter who you are and what you do, but to level this at conservatives seems out of hand to me.

See my post at #28. I think many see his advice as the equivalent of coming from a person like Karl Rove or Steve Schmidt at best, and from the NYT opinion column at worst.

As I said, this is not bad advice no matter who you are. I think it is the source that irritates them.

What I was trying to say at post #4, and I think Smokin’ Joe was driving at in his post, is that some things are more important than some other things, but they don’t have to be mutually exclusive.

John Adams is a great example, though maybe not the most appropriate, because his wife was generally on board with him “doing his duty”. During the war, when John Adams was constantly away from his wife and family, it put the strain on them. She didn’t want him to go. The kids didn’t want him to go. And their family life suffered.

But I don’t think anyone could argue that what he did, spending only a fraction of time each year with his family, was wrong. He did what duty required of him.

Someone has to do it. But they don’t have to let it destroy them, and I think that is the point Giles makes.

Why is this pointed at conservatives?

I think it’s so that we CAN continue the fight. Let the Libs, Dems and their ilk burn THEMSELVES out! Let THEM resort to Xanax, Prilosec, and whatever ‘recreational’ drug they want in order to calm them down/keep them going. WE will be the ones refreshed and ready to keep going and WIN the fight!

As for me, I think ALL his suggestions are right on. Even #1. Sometimes, you HAVE to step away from media. If you don’t, you’ll work yourself into a frenzy. Fried, stressed, frazzled patriots are NOT as effective as refreshed and ready patriots.

(And for those who fear that Barry the Boob will foist something on us when they are NOT looking...fear not. Someone, somewhere is ALWAYS watching. Take a break-someone out there has your back. Really.)

Extreme left has a big advantage here because they are thoroughly plugged in with government, schools and media, whereas most conservatives have a life.

Lefties have all the time in the world to be activists because they get money from government directly or indirectly.
Homosexuals for example always seem to have plenty of time, money and influence far beyond their numbers.

If they weren’t so dangerous it would almost be amusing.

Lefties and statists who couldn’t organize a box of cookies are busy organizing entire communities and “interest groups” into harmful power blocks. Now we have one of them in position to “organize” (actually “dis-organize”) the entire country.

You wouldn’t let them clean out your garage, but they want to tell us all how to live.

I remember that George Washington... a man that is called the Father of this Republic... a man that fought against odds that were astronomical when compared to anything we have faced to date... I remember that he left his beloved farm and family that he so loved and he did it for many years and against his own wishes... but he did answer our call and the call for Freedom and Liberty and we would not be here today if he had not done so. His story was repeated over and over by many of our Founders.

These men were not selfish like many people today and their families understood them and their cause and worked to help them to be successful... they did not go on oprah to complain and cry and they didn't write demoralizing and defeatist propaganda like this article.

Yes family is important... but GOD is above all. GOD gifted us with the sacrifices of those that have come before us. Just think about the unselfish gift of those that have fought for our way of life... from the beginning until today... think of the sacrifices of their families.

I believe that the Holy Spirit touched the hearts and minds of the men that wrote our Constitution in much the same way that the men that wrote the Bible were touched. Sometimes we are called to do the hard thing... sometimes we must sacrifice. Did JESUS not command his Disciples to leave their families and to follow him? Did he not promise that their families would be cared for? Sometimes we must sacrifice for things bigger than ourselves. I believe we are standing on the cusp of those times again.
