“They attacked the vets and fired on them”

Overt lie or ignorance.

Army did not fire on Vets.

Used tear gas and did forcefully remove them. An infant did die of the tear gas. A participant who was shot and killed was shot off site in a building In a separate incident, unrelated to the Army’s forced removal of the campers, by DC police

I became familiar with the Bonus March history after hearing Chinese Communist apologists justifying the Tiananmen Square massacre with the supposed massacre of US Vets of the Bonus March, trying to create the moral equivalence of US and communist regimes.

Let this not turn in to a thread about the Bonus March. Just setting the record straight to off set long term leftist disinformation.

Dear Finnegan, Thank you for pointing out that the Army did NOT fire on the Bonus Marchers. I concur with your research.

And thank you for keeping truth, not disinformation, alive.

Thank you for setting the record straight. I was unfamiliar with the incident though I had heard about it. There is too much revisionist history promoted these days.

Fact remains that a force was assembled to drive out their brothers in arms.

The military will obey orders.

What’s always left out of most descriptions of the Bonus March was that the WWI vets eventually got their wish; the bonus was paid out in 1936 rather than 1945, the original payout date (but those who did wait until 1945 kept earning interest).

Congress passed the measure for the early payout and it was VETOED by Franklin Roosevelt! His veto was then overridden. My grandfather used his bonus to make down payment on a house.

Anyway, God bless our WWII vets! Hope there’s more vets’ marches on Washington so I can be there next time.

...the Bonus March history ...

Thank you so much for setting the record straight. Dwight Eisenhower was a patriot, and one of the greatest presidents, contrary to all the vile Democrat propaganda constantly heaped on him.

Army did not fire on Vets.

I have read references to the use of arms in the past which is why I used the terms I did in my original post.

However I can't find authoritative references on the net today so concede that point.

But there is no question that under the direction of MacArthur, Patton and Eisenhower the power of the army was turned against vets and civilians and they were brutalized in other ways.

It is a matter of record that they fired tear gas against the vets and that officers did beat them with the flats of their sabers, causing severe injuries in many cases.

And there is no question that they burned the Vets and their families out of the hovels they had built for shelter.

I have read that many were hospitalized with severe injuries from the use of sabers and tear gas and that others were severely burned in the fires - some of whom later died from their injuries.

The reason I made my original post was to point out an instance in our past where military force had been used against veterans and civilians, and that it is not improbable that it could happen again.

After all, even such well respected patriots as Patton and Eisenhower (and their subordinates) were not above following orders to use force against unarmed and innocent vets and civilians.

There is not much doubt that President Obama has packed the military with people more loyal to him than to the country or the constitution, or that he would hesitate to use the military in the same way as Hoover and MacArthur did back in 1932.
