WASHINGTON (CBS DC) The Senate has taken the lead from the House in attempting to devise a plan to reopen the government and avoid a potential default in the coming week.
Speaking with Bob Schieffer on Sunday, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said he is cautiously hopeful that the Senate can pick up where House negotiations have become deadlocked, and hopefully avoid the continued government shutdown through bipartisan Senate discussion.
Im cautiously hopeful, optimistic that we can come to an agreement and open up the government and avoid default based on the bipartisan meetings that are going on, Schumer said on Face the Nation. Between President Obama, Senate Democrats and Senate Republicans, Schumer said, Theres a will, we now have to find a way, we know the House wont find that way, so all of it rests on our shoulders.
The Democratic Policy Committee Chairman and member of the Senate Finance Committee said that much of the debate centers around how the parties are defining revenue and entitlement cuts. Adding that neither Democrats nor Republicans like the sequester, noting Sen. John McCains staunch opposition to cuts to defense.
Schieffer asked if there was something that could be given to House Speaker John Boehner in order to appease tea party and more right-wing conservative members of the house to bring them along.
You hit the nail on the head, no ones sure what will bring those people along. I think theres a feeling amongst senate Republicans whether it be Sen. Mcconnell, Sen. McCain, Sen. Collins that if we can get a broad bipartisan majority to pass something in the next few days it may help crack the logjam in the House, said Schumer.
And of course, Speaker Boehner wouldnt get the 40 or so people on the hard right to go along, but could get a lot of his mainstream Republicans, continued Schumer. I think these mainstream republicans are getting fed up with the tea party and Ted Cruz, they see wheres its leading them, to very low poll numbers
Schumer stated that some in the Senate believe that Speaker Boehner cant lead, but if the Senate leads, he could follow our lead.
Schumer suggested that the government be opened for a period of time before the January sequester so that serious bipartisan discussions could continue.
He added that he hopes more centrist Republicans break from the more conservative faction of the party.
When your party is doing as poorly as it has, mainly because theyve let Ted Cruz and the Tea Party-type thinking lead them around you break from that.
Yeah? And I’m fed up with “mainstream” republicans...
I’m fed up with “Mainstream Republicans” acting and voting like “Mainstream Democrats”.
Isn’t that nice? Chuck Schumer is looking out for his kapos.
Hey Im fed up with McCain and Graham type “Republicans” too..I am all for them just switching sides already, they know they want to
I think Ted Cruz is doing an awesome job, Schumer. Am I a mainstream Republican? Am I a Tea Party member? Who am I, Schumer?
Notice how the terms “The Loyal Opposition” and “The Politics of Personal Destruction” are missing from Today’s Headlines?
Gee, I wonder why. cough, cough...
> Yeah? And Im fed up with mainstream republicans...
You prbably mean politicians period
Were winning and the Democrats know it.
If the Republican party was self districting, the Democrats would stand silent and watch.
Don’t you just love how the Democrats decide who is and who is not a “mainstream” Republican?
But most of all we’re really fed up with Chuckie Schumer.
Love it when a neo nazi tells us what were doing wrong.
So are we Chucku Schumer!
Schieffer implying the Sudetenland?
“kapo” is the operative word here...
The democrats are marching into full on fascism and the Kapos can only scream about conservatives.
Funny, I am fed up with Up-Chuck Schumer. We all know the most dangerous place to be on Sunday is between this Clymer and a camera. Just go away, Rat.
Hey Chuck, let’s discuss your connection with Mexico.
MSR’s is what we’re fed up with.
FU, Carl Schaumberg!!
(Not you, Tailgunner Joe)
Really? Pretty vague...Compelling evidence, please.
Schumer. SHUT UP.
Yeah, don’t dare mention all of the “kapos” are America hating socialists and in the Democrat caucus...
The Golden Calf has grown up to be a hollow Bronze Bull.
Screw upChuck and the GOPe.
Mainstream Democrat Schumer had better get used to fewer of his buddies in the Mainstream Republican Party.
"Who cares". "What difference could it possibly make at this time, anyhow?". "Everybody does it."
He's a lowly worm of a man.
I’m fed up with Nazis like Chuckie Schumer.
They really just want to help Republicans, don't they? Outstanding of them all! /s
Lets start that conversation by acknowledging we arent going to deport 12 million illegal immigrants... bringing these workers out of the shadows and into being taxpaying members of society. Imagine 12 million people who are already here coming out of the shadows to become new taxpayers.12 million more people assimilating into society. 12 million more people being productive contributors. [but hes not in favor of amnesty, snicker, definition of is is]
...by softening its edge on some volatile social issues and altering its image as the party always seemingly "eager to go to war... We do need to expand the party and grow the party and that does mean that we don't always all agree on every issue" ... the party needs to become more welcoming to individuals who disagree with basic Republican doctrine on emotional social issues such as gay marriage... "We're going to have to be a little hands off on some of these issues ... and get people into the party," Paul said.

...The Republican Party must embrace more legal immigration.
Unfortunately, like many of the major debates in Washington, immigration has become a stalemate-where both sides are imprisoned by their own rhetoric or attachment to sacred cows that prevent the possibility of a balanced solution.
Immigration Reform will not occur until Conservative Republicans, like myself, become part of the solution. I am here today to begin that conversation.
Lets start that conversation by acknowledging we arent going to deport 12 million illegal immigrants.
If you wish to work, if you wish to live and work in America, then we will find a place for you...
This is where prudence, compassion and thrift all point us toward the same goal: bringing these workers out of the shadows and into being taxpaying members of society.
Imagine 12 million people who are already here coming out of the shadows to become new taxpayers.12 million more people assimilating into society. 12 million more people being productive contributors.

Rand Slams Congress for Funding Egypt’s Generals:
‘How Does Your Conscience Feel Now?’

Sen. Rand Paul is hammering his fellow senators for keeping billions in financial aid flowing to Egypt’s military — even as Cairo’s security forces massacre anti-government activists.
[by “anti-government activists” is meant church-burning jihadists]
Here's the passage at issue:In the 1980s, the war caucus in Congress armed bin Laden and the mujaheddin in their fight with the Soviet Union. In fact, it was the official position of the State Department to support radical jihad against the Soviets. We all know how well that worked out.Let's leave aside for now the insulting, utterly asinine, sickening, inexcusable use of the phrase "war caucus" to describe those (including Reagan!) who supported the mujaheddin against the Soviets. That word choice alone is almost entirely disqualifying for its purveyor to ever be president.
Instead, let's just look at a little history here -- because the ignorance evident in this paragraph is truly astonishing. One would be hard pressed to find even a single historian, whether right, left, or center, who would argue anything other than that the Soviet failure in Afghanistan was not just a huge factor, but probably an essential one, in the Soviets' ultimate loss of the Cold War. Thanks Tailgunner Joe.
Gosh, where have we heard that kind of talk before? Oh yeah:
When the Rinos Cave and They Will, a New Party will Emerge
Jerk of the Week - Establishment Republicans
the common goal?
MSNBC Host: The Constitution is Flawed, So Obama & Democrats Need Absolute Power
one more thing:
The Obama-Reid Gamble
[snip] President Obama and Senate Democratic Leader Reid believe they can break the House Republicans and force them to reopen the government and pass a debt ceiling hike with no negotiations and no conditions. [/snip]
translation Mcshamey told me so....
Does he even know what he is actually saying? Dolt.
I think it's so sweet, understanding and empathetic for democrat criminals to decide what is troubling the opposition party...
But only after the "Republicans" (apparently) rented some b***s.
I wonder if the socialist/progressives are really a runaway spending monolith, with total ignorance of economics?
Every last one.
LOL In your dreams, Schumer!
Mainstream republicans can go jump in the lake.
Hear that, GOP-e? You just got the Chuckie Schumer seal of approval!
UpChuck needs to shut his pie hole before all his braims leak out. (whats left of them)
Especially from Schieffer, who's old enough to know what it means.
This is so obvious it’s funny. OF COURSE the dems want the RINO’S to believe this. They KNOW that if they can get the moderate republicans to vote like democrats, there will be a split in the GOP and that means absolute power for the democrats. Think about it: WHY IN THE WORLD would a liberal like Chuck Schumer give beneficial advise to HELP republicans?
This is just the latest talking point from the DNC being spouted all over the Sunday shows and, no doubt, in Carney’s pressers for the next few days.
Haven't you noticed?
It's because the Democratic Party is always about rainbows, unicorns and lollipops...
I’ve said this before and will continue to do so. Conservative
Republicans are traditional Republicans. The job of liberals
is to come up with stupid, destructive ideas. The job of
conservatives is slow them down and/or stop them for the
sake of society. The weaker among the self-described conservatives
kowtow to the news media which has cast their lot with
the liberal agenda. Those of us who have the platform
to explain the players and the game to the uninformed
need to get busy.
The guy is a clown.
