Student threatened with sex offender status commits suicide

An Alabama high school student killed himself after he was threatened with severe legal consequences — including registration as a sex offender — because he went streaking at a football game.

The student, 15-year-old Christian Adamek, died from wounds he sustained while attempting to hang himself, according to The Daily Mail.

Adamek ran naked across the field at a September 27th football game between his school, Sparkman High School, and Grissom High School. The incident was recorded and put on Youtube, and many students remarked that the prank had made Adamek — already a popular student, according to reports — a “legend.”

The principal seemed to be listing the possible consequences for such acts in response to reporters questions. He even seemed somewhat sympathetic to the kid, kids being kids and not always exercising the best judgement. I don’t think its fair to imply he was responsible for the kid’s suicide.

How long until it's made known he was on one or more anti-depressants that list suicide as a side effect? 5-4-3-2-

C’mon, this was stupidity on the part of the school.

The kid could have been charged as being a public nuisance.

“sex offender” is way, way overblown.

Did they actually charge or threaten to charge him? I watched the newscast, all I saw was the principal responding to a question from a reporter. If they did, then I agree with you.

If he had said he was gay, he would be a hero instead of a stupid dead kid.

Rambunctious bot otherwise normal boys are labeled sex offenders for life while real pervs are getting preferential treatment.
What an upside down world we live in.
What happened to "Let the punishment fit the crime"?
A stern talking to would have been sufficient.

What a stupid, moronic thing to do. In front of kids too.

I don’t think it makes a difference. If a 15 year old does a stupid stunt and now has to worry about being tagged as a “sex offender” - that could clearly mess with his head. 15 year olds don’t have the mental acuity to put things in perspective. Every problem looks big to them.

Agree entirely. Such mandatory sentences are ridiculous overreactions, they preclude any critical thought. Each case should be judged by its own set of circumstances.

But I don't believe the principal is responsible for this kid's death, as the article implies.

I didn’t see where the threat of being charged as a sex offender led to the suicide. The kid was clearly begging for attention. Who knows what was going on at home, or what else was going on in this kid’s head? “Sex offender” is mentioned and then the kid kills himself? It’s nice that the headline connects the dots for me, but I’ll handle that on my own, thanks.

The principal seemed to be listing the possible consequences for such acts in response to reporters questions....Sparkman High Principal Michael Campbell told WHNT a day before the suicide attempt that the teen could face major repercussions because of his actions..... 'There's the legal complications,' Campbell said. 'Public lewdness and court consequences outside of school with the legal system, as well as the school consequences that the school system has set up.'

The principal should have kept his mouth shut about it - both with respect to any school discipline (until settled) as well as "legal complications". The principal as well as any other administrators publicly commenting should be the ones facing "major repercussions". Grandstanding POS.

“-——— instead of a stupid dead kid.”

__

Aw,come on,he was 15. Most 15 year old boys do stupid things-—I raised 3 of them.

His prank was overblown and he was frightened.
