Why is he an ‘idiot’?

I have no problem with the confederate flag, but bringing it to a Tea Party event is idiotic, specifically because it allows the other side to swing the debate over to territory they're more comfortable on.

The confederate flag has absolutely nothing to do with today's world and the issues being discussed.

Similarly, a person bringing a Soviet Union flag to a pro-Obamacare rally would be idiotic, allowing us to point at the flag and call them all old school communists longing for the return of a brutal communist state.

You want to keep your protest on message and not allow openings to the other side to derail it.

Wikipeida has this on line. I always (well not always) thought it was a Confederate Navy Jack as it may have been.

A rectangular variant of the square Confederate Army battle flag was used by a few Army units, such as the Army of Tennessee[citation needed]. Despite never having historically represented the C.S.A. as a nation nor officially recognized as one of the national flags, it is commonly referred to as “the Confederate Flag” and has become a widely recognized symbol of the South.[22] It is also known as the rebel flag, Dixie flag, and Southern cross and is often incorrectly referred to as the “Stars and Bars” (the actual “Stars and Bars” is the First National Flag, which used an entirely different design).[23] The self-declared Confederate enclave of Town Line, New York, lacking a genuine Confederate flag, flew a version of this flag prior to its 1946 vote to rejoin the Union.
20th century popularity

During the first half of the 20th century, the Confederate flag enjoyed renewed popularity. During World War II some U.S. military units with Southern nicknames, or made up largely of Southerners, made the flag their unofficial emblem. The USS Columbia flew a Confederate Navy Ensign as a battle flag throughout combat in the South Pacific in World War II. This was done in honor of Columbia, the ship’s namesake and the capital city of South Carolina, the first state to secede from the Union. Some soldiers carried Confederate flags into battle. After the Battle of Okinawa a Confederate flag was raised over Shuri Castle by a Marine from the self-styled “Rebel Company” (Company A of the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines). It was visible for miles and was taken down after three days on the orders of General Simon B. Buckner, Jr. (son of Confederate general Simon Buckner), who stated that it was inappropriate as “Americans from all over are involved in this battle”. It was replaced with the flag of the United States.[24] By the end of World War II, the use of the Confederate flag in the military was rare.[25]

States rights is very relevant unless you are a historical idiot. The Confederate flag is a reminder that the right of secession is inherit and always a valid choice.

While I can see your point, just being there, is an opening for the pinko commie geek rats to try to derail it.

Or wear a Che tee shirt. They would seem to be all the rage now.

Republicans and tea-partiers have really been taking advantage of that.....

When you allow the liberals to start picking your symbols you have lost half the battle......if you give in to the confederate flag they will merely point to something else. They are always going to paint us as racist.....the proper response is to ignore them and do what you believe is right. Also you can always tell them to go here ....it will really piss ‘em off:

The left finds a whole host of things debatable. So you will kowtow to whatever the left/Marxist consider to be debatable? In that case they can manipulate it to whatever they want which happens quite frequently to the right. The right just keeps backing up because the left squeals. The more appropriate response is so what?

“The confederate flag has absolutely nothing to do with today’s world and the issues being discussed.” -D

Are you familiar with the 50 state petitions to peacefully secede that received tens of thousands signatures on WH.gov?

Personally, I fly Bonnie Blue. Idiots of all stripes just don’t know what to make of it. In fact most people like it, even those in the, ‘I am offended by your individual freedom of expression’ crowd.
