All OK with you and yours in Cebu ?
We have some expat freepers living there. Hope they are OK and check in.
Aw crap. Sorry to hear this.
Alex, check in please.
Prayers extended for all in the area.
The depth of the earthquake is 20 miles below the surface. I’m not sure if there would be huge levels of damage. If that earthquake was 10 miles below the surface, then the damage and casualty toll would be huge.
alex right across from the epicenter in Dalaguete , Cebu .
Sorry here too, Laz. AlexW prayers that you are far from the epicenter and that you, your family and friends are safe.
This is a major quake and it’s shallow both of which can mean widespread and catastrophic damage.
Prayers offered for the Philippines
Prayers up : /
Here’s a link that shows the depth was only 10 kms (6.2 miles) : http://earthquake-report.com/2013/10/15/very-strong-earthquake-mindanao-philippines-on-october-15-2013/
That’s fairly shallow, and if that’s accurate, there could be some significant damage and regrettably, loss of life.
Any expectation of a tsunami?
AlexW, hope you’re OK. JR (non-freeper), hope you’re OK also! I’ll FB you and Vevz and try to see if you’re OK.
I also know of a great nature photographer in the Philippines. Prayers for all of them!
I hope it’s deep and distant enough from major population centers. Our prayers and best wishes.
And he was just saying that he was on the beach but protected by other islands. Oh-oh. Hope you and your family are safe, Alex.
Reuters says no immediate reports of damage or injuries. Not very many articles up yet though.
As though third-world countries or anyone else has infinite money to replace all buildings and bridges.
Earthquake Ping List.
If you wish to be added to it, please FReepmail me.
Prayers for all...
No official word yet on a tsunami.
Large quake shakes Philippines; no tsunami threat to Hawaii
A large earthquake has struck the Philippines but did not generate a tsunami threat for Hawaii, officials said today.
The quake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.2, was centered 3 miles east of Balilihan in Bohol province at 8:13 a.m. Tuesday at the epicenter (2:13 p.m. Monday in Hawaii) at a depth of 35 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach said “no destructive widespread tsunami threat exists based on historical earthquake and tsunami data. However, earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within a hundred kilometers of the earthquake epicenter.”
The initial temblor was followed by a magnitude 5,4 quake in the same area about 15 minutes later, according to the USGS.
That is pretty deep....up the thread it was reported as much closer to the surface.
I didn’t feel a think in Manila. I was up doing some online coursework and on the 22nd floor of my condo building.
Did not feel a thing in Manila.
any damages being reported locally? We are not getting much news.
Ray, the depth is 56.8 KM or 35 miles deep and is considered a shallow quake.
Shallow earthquakes are between 0 and 70 km deep; intermediate earthquakes, 70 - 300 km deep; and deep earthquakes, 300 - 700 km deep. In general, the term "deep-focus earthquakes" is applied to earthquakes deeper than 70 km. All earthquakes deeper than 70 km are localized within great slabs of shallow lithosphere that are sinking into the Earth's mantle.
USGS: Measuring the Size of an Earthquake
Been watching on the USGS site. Apparently no tsunami warnings..?
Sister has friends in Mandanao.
Anyone getting reports of damage?
Cebu City : Ive been in several earthquakes in my life. This was by far the strongest & most frightening. I thought my building would fall down. Many aftershocks continuing every few minutes. Power is out everywhere. Even our generator has not come on yet.
Update 01:17 UTC : A 400 year old church in Bohol has collapsed
Update 01:17 UTC : Reports from Bohol are mentioning roads torn up, electricity cables down
Update 01:10 UTC : Reports are giving at least 4 fatalities. Many provincial authorities have suspended classes for today. Also reports of many collapsed houses in Bohol

There’s no official tsunami threat listed yet for Alaska and hopefully there won’t be.
You can see the last part of "Deleguete" on the left of the epicenter .. where Alex W is with wife and son.
Sure looks like it
