Road Trip: Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base, Alabama

Maxwell Air Force Base, officially known as Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base, is a United States Air Force installation under the Air Education and Training Command (AETC). The installation is located in Montgomery, Alabama, US. It was named in honor of Atmore, Alabama native Second Lieutenant William C. Maxwell.

Maxwell AFB is the headquarters of Air University (AU), a major component of Air Education and Training Command (AETC), and is the U.S. Air Force's center for Joint Professional Military Education (PME). The host wing for Maxwell-Gunter is the 42nd Air Base Wing (42 ABW). The 908th Airlift Wing (908 AW) is a tenant activity and the only operational flying wing at Maxwell.

Under Air University are three principal schools that provide various levels of Joint Professional Military Education (JPME). The first is Squadron Officer School (SOS), a nearly 2 month program oriented towards First Lieutenants and Captains in the Regular Air Force, Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard.

The second, Air Command and Staff College (ACSC) is a year long program for Air Force officers (to include Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard), Department of Defense civil servants in the grade of GS-13, as well as select officers from other U.S. and Allied armed forces in the rank of Major, Lieutenant Commander, Squadron Leader or equivalent. ACSC is considered "intermediate" level JPME.

The third program, Air War College (AWC) is also a year long program and selects students from the same sources as ACSC, but the minimum rank for attendance rises to Lieutenant Colonel, Commander, Wing Commander or equivalent or DoD civil servants in the grade of GS-14. AWC is considered "senior" level JPME.

Maxwell AFB also hosts the Air Force Officer Accession and Training Schools (AFOATS), which has oversight for two of the Air Force's three officer commissioning programs, Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC), which is headquartered at Maxwell and Air Force Officer Training School (OTS), which is headquartered and conducted at Maxwell AFB, having relocated from Lackland AFB, Texas in the 1990s.

Capitalizing on the new facilities built for OTS in the 1990s, Maxwell is now the only base hosting the annual fall/spring semester and summer Field Training (FT) encampments for AFROTC cadets that they must attend before commissioning. The Civil Air Patrol's corporate and joint CAP-USAF headquarters is also located at Maxwell.

I owe my life to Maxwell AFB surgeons.

1) I was born there in June 1962 (breech)
2) As a newborn, on the drive home from the hospital I was seriously injured in a car accident. Thankfully, the surgeons at Maxwell were able to repair my shredded face.

"14 October 1947 - Air Force test pilot Charles E. "Chuck" Yeager (24) flew the experimental Bell X-1 [Bell XS-1] rocket plane aircraft and broke the sound barrier to Mach 1.07 for the first time over Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., which was then called Muroc Army Air Field. The area has the largest dry lake bed in the world, a 44-square mile area known as Rogers Lake. Suspended from the belly of a Boeing B-29, Glamorous Glennis was dropped at 10:26 a.m. from a height of 20,000 feet. Yeager (who had broken two ribs in a riding accident the night before) fired the four rocket motor chambers in pairs, breaking through the sound barrier as he increased airspeed to almost 700 mph and climbed to an altitude of 43,000 feet. The XS-1 remained at supersonic speeds for 20.5 seconds, with none of the buffeting that characterized high-speed subsonic flight. The 14-minute flight was Yeager’s ninth since being named primary pilot in June 1947. The Air Force and the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (the forerunner of NASA) did not make the event public until Jun 10, 1948."

Hi again, Kathy! I was off today - and a lucky thing - I can barely walk.

Agreed on the news from the National Mall - apparently repeat missions will be necessary.

Whatever it takes! We're talking not only about our Vets and serving Military, but our Fathers' generation, the Greatest Generation, who endured withering hardship during the Great Depression, fought valiantly and prevailed against monstrous tyranny in WWII, and led us into a half-century of Pax Americana. But for their heroic service and sacrifice, the World in which we grew up would not exist.

Some of them were there yesterday - elderly men and women - many in wheelchairs, walkers or on crutches and canes. It was a privilege for me to walk among them. I felt the presence of my Father and Uncles who served in that war. I will return as many times as I must to vindicate them and all who have served our Beloved Nation!

I built a plastic model of the X-15 when I was a boy - built lots of models. My all time fave was a Gulfhawk from Monogram - it had working retractable landing gear. You can't find them anymore - I haven't seen a Monogram kit in years.

Can’t say I’m surprised that your legs were wobbly....you gave them quite a workout yesterday, albeit a most worthy one.

I wish it weren’t so far away and I wasn’t caregiving.

I know the drill...my knees hold up for the need. But sit down or overnight....virtually non functional. Often at work I forget to get up and move around. Stand up, hold on to something, wait for the knees to get “oiled”, then limp up and down the hall til full function returns. Getting old is a pain at times.
