Squirrels relish White House kitchen garden as shutdown sidelines staff

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In the famous White House kitchen garden, tomatoes are rotting on the vine. Herbs have gone to seed. And the sweet potatoes - a favorite of President Barack Obama - have become worm food. It's another impact of the government shutdown, one that only the fox and the many squirrels that live on the White House grounds could love. A foodie blog called Obamafoodarama that obsessively covers the White House "food ephemera" and the administration's food policy has posted photos of the normally immaculate garden looking more like what most gardeners' plots appear at this time of the year - overgrown. "Due to the shutdown, garden maintenance has been reduced considerably and only being watered as needed," a White House official confirmed, speaking on background.

You have GOT TO BE KIDDING ME. What a horrid example of excess that the residents of the White House can't go out and do yard work on their garden and instead let the food ROT.

They’ve sure made plenty of media productions showing Mooch out there slaving in the hot sun.

What’s next, photos of the starving first family (minus the dogs)

Disgraceful. Michelle puts out a book on the garden, has children come to look at it, then they let it ROT.

A perfect picture for what they have wrought on this Country.

They still have hundreds of people working in the White House, including about 20 highly-paid assistants to Muchelle. Couldn’t they maybe put in 15 minutes a day each? Or maybe Muchelle could get out there and do a little work herself, since she keeps telling us that such exercise is healthy.

So prior to the shutdown, it was watered when it wasn’t needed.

just too funny...

for all of us who really do garden, the white house garden has been a laughing joke..for we know she is not doing a lick of any work, she doesn’t know how to work...and after this term she will be even more lazier..

Neither POTUS or FLOTUS can do real work. They expect others to do it for them and they show up to claim the credit. They are two disgusting frauds posing as useful human beings. We should deport them to Cuba where they can find their true calling — Fidel Castro and his brother won’t live forever. On second thought, this is a cruel punishment for the long suffering Cubans. Better we ship them to Antarctica for 10 years of winter fun.

I am having a hard time not busting a gut laughing.

Have these people no shame? Next moochelle will be posting pictures about how she and the kids attempted to shop at the local S-Mart, but their EBT cards were denied because of the "shutdown".

What's next? They actually have to go out themselves and pick up their dog's droppings because there are not enough Majors and Captains to do it for them? Oh, the horror! They don't have enough left on their budget to afford any more Lobster, and are now forced to use only enough Fry Cooks instead of PhD'd Chefs to come up with a five-course setting instead of their normal twelve-course fare!

Shades of 'forced-to-stretch-the-budget'!

Got fava beans, lettuce, turnips and cabbages (those get her ‘going’ the worst) now.

The truth is that this garden didn’t SUDDENLY start dying the moment the government shutdown occurred. Michelle got her photo ops and press releases out of it, and then she wanted nothing to do with it any more.

So... it has been going to rot for six months. Now Michelle doesn’t have to answer any questions about the garden. Nor do the Obama’s have to answer any more questions about what goes on in the White House. The public is not allowed.

The parks and monuments will remain shut down, even if the ‘shutdown’ is over.

Sooner or later, the American public will wake up. It may be too late, but soon they will realize ‘this land is not your land’ anymore.
