Skip to comments. No, Shelia Jackson Lee Didn't Call For "Martial Law" In the Sense That You Understand It

First, here are the comments in question:
It is not the truth to suggest that there are not enough voters, members of Congress, that would vote right now today to open this government. Its something called a continuing resolution, but its a bill that you put on the floor that has been passed already by Republicans and Democrats in the United States Senate. This is not an idea of anyone over another person. Republican and Democratic Senators have already voted for this clean bill that we can vote on today. We have martial law. What that means and my colleagues know what it means. Its that you can put a bill on in just minutes.
In reality, Lee was referring to a certain procedure in the House Of Representatives that allows bills to be rushed to the House floor:
Under the martial law procedure, long-standing House rules that require at least one day between the unveiling of significant legislation and the House floor vote on that legislation so that Members can learn what they are being asked to vote on are swept away. Instead, under martial law, the Leadership can file legislation with tens or hundreds of pages of fine print and move immediately to debate and votes on it, before Members of Congress, the media, or the public have an opportunity to understand fully what provisions have been altered or inserted into the legislation behind closed doors.

It looks like some of us (that includes me) jumped the gun. :(
IMO, martial law is martial law - doesn’t matter how you try to define it or why it is instituted. Considering that it was Sheila Jackson Lee that uttered these words, I suspect that she only understands that it means one thing. Certainly those rulings handed down by BO and his henchmen it has been clearly demonstrated that it means only one thing.
...sorta like Obamacare when no one was able to read it because it didn't exist
So she didn’t really mean what she said, and this guy has to write an article to explain what she said because she really didn’t mean it the way everyone understands it to be, because she is brilliant and the rest of us are dolts.
Well, I’m convinced, so tonight when I have a beer with the astronauts who walked on Mars and maybe they an explain it me.
Martial Law? She meant Martian Law where once you plant a flag on Mars you have to take a picture of it when you revisit the planet.
One of her handlers explained, “She didn’t have her usual dose of thorazine that day. She meant to say ‘marital’ law, not martial law.”
She probably meant “Marsha Law” - from the Brady Bunch.
Shelia Jackson Lee is a stupid Obot. Most of the responses so far are hilarious.
Wonder if we’ll be seeing that cache of ammo that the DHS recently acquired. Take cover.
They all (clearing throat) sound alike to me ....
Small people in big positions often resort to “Insider” jargon to puff themselves up and (In their minds) impress their audience.
Yes, we did. And her foolish comments and thuggish behavior notwithstanding, we should be better than that.
Couldn’t agree more. Martial Law is Martial Law. Of course, the author is covering up for a brain dead that doesn’t have the slightest clue about the context he’s talking about.
