Unions Asks for Shutdown to Be Deemed an Emergency (so they can skip loan payments and get free gas)

A federal workers union is demanding that President Barack Obama declare the shutdown a national emergency and force businesses, hospitals, and schools to forgive workers’ bill payments until a deal is reached.

American Federation of Government Employees President J. David Cox sent a letter to Obama on Friday lamenting that the lengthy shutdown would hurt government workers. He proposed that the White House intervene to declare the shutdown a federal emergency, which would allow workers to collect zero-interest loans from FEMA and force businesses to extend lines of credit to employees.

We demand free gas, healthcare, utilities, and public transportation ... and we demand that we be allowed to skip mortgage, rent, and car loan payments ... until you beat those evil taxpayers into submission ... or until you fire up the printing presses and inflate the currency into oblivion ... cause we've been forced to suffer enough!

One more step on the road to a well-off nomenklatura/apparatchik ruling class operating for the benefit of the workers. SEIU must go.

Only 18% of BIG government being shut down and non-essential workers being sent home is an “emergency”? What kinds of drugs are these people doing?

I’m a govvie and I think this is outrageous. Asking...demanding...things like free gas, free health care etc. just makes us all look like leeches. Trust me on this, we’re just regular people doing our jobs.

DITTO. The only beef I have with some on FR is constant harping that fed gov workers have bigger salaries. Many never realize 20 years ago fed workers starting salary is much lower then private. Historically it grows slowly and the only reward is the good pension after 30 to 40 years of service. The reason why many private salaries are less then fed gov is corporate America has been offshoring jobs and support illegal immigration. How are private salaries of the past going to increase if corporate America is undermining it. Fed gov salaries are higher because private salaries were cut. It shows how this country has gone down hill when private salaries became less then Fed gov salaries. Got a problem with that go talk to the people who cut your salaries - corporate America!!!!

When they come back from their extended vacations, they will be paid. Congress already passed the bill to give them retroactive pay. What more do they want? Oh, sorry. Stupid of me.

It is always important to check what is being compared. I believe that Janitors in the DOJ earn much more than those who clean K St Law offices, while the lawyers in those K St offices earn much more than Lawyers in the DOJ.
