Skip to comments.Markey: ‘Tea Party shutdown’ locking public out of debate over climate regs

The government shutdown is denying members of the public a chance to weigh in on contentious planned regulations that would limit carbon emissions from existing power plants, Sen. Ed Markey charged Tuesday.
The Massachusetts Democrat, who has long championed federal efforts to tackle climate change, blamed the Republican Partys conservative wing for the shutdown, which prompted the cancellation of public hearing Tuesday on the Environmental Protection Agency proposal.
This Tea Party shutdown has shut out the public from even discussing climate change, and what our government can do about it, Markey said during a conference call with reporters.
Markey chided the GOP for its crazy opposition to the governments proposed role in global warming issues, arguing the EPAs forthcoming regulations are needed to stop climate changes that are endangering our people and our planet.
The EPA has already proposed regulations limiting greenhouse gas emissions from new power plants, and is currently developing a rule for existing plants. The agency is due to propose that rule in June of next year, and finalize it one year later. Together, the regulations represent the centerpiece of President Obama's second-term climate initiative.
A series of 11 public meetings were scheduled, as the EPA sets out to gather feedback from interested parties. But the so-called listening tour drew fire last week from Republicans, who said too few dates were scheduled in states that rely heavily on coal electricity.
The sessions are to be held at EPA regional offices, which oversee large swathes of the country.
Republicans, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) and Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (W.Va.), called upon the EPA to add more coal country dates.
Yet the shutdown, which forced the furlough of more than 90 percent of the EPAs workforce, also prompted the agency to postpone the tours the first two stops: Tuesdays event, which was scheduled in Boston, and an Oct. 18 session in Philadelphia.
240 people have bothered to vote in Ed Markey’s neighborhood so far. In the primary to replace him.
I hope the EPA drown in their own BS.
Just damn you Nixon.
“The government shutdown is denying members of the public a chance to weigh in on contentious planned regulations that would limit carbon emissions from existing power plants, Sen. Ed Markey charged Tuesday.”
Like this liberal robot gives a damn about rational people having a voice in the ridiculous regulations meant to shut down coal in America. The environmentalist controlled demonrats want any and all fossil fuel use and production eliminated in America.
Isnt it LONG past time we start calling Democrats marxist, socialist or progressive extremists???
Whomever is keeping the political enemies master list, please make sure this cretin is in the the top 100. Thanks in advance.
What a DIM wit. Guys like him are the reason that everything is so screwed-up. May he lose his voice.
How come Maryland gets 3 Senators and Massachusetts gets only 1?
No Ed, it is Obama and you and most Dem’s who know very little about anything except how to be stupid.
He’s a radical, dolt.
He’s an idiot.
When our politicians at least put up a fight for what’s right, there will be indirect, good consequences, even without complete victories. RINO capitulations have just hurried along the bad consequences.
Enough is enough.
“Republicans, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) and Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (W.Va.), called upon the EPA to add more coal country dates.”
They are stupid, but not THAT stupid.
...Sheila Jackson Lee...
It's like Charles Manson coming out on his porch and calling Einstein crazy.
You can ALWAYS tell when a Leftist is losing an argument, they begin calling the other side crazy. End Game. “Deniers” ( of B.S.) win again!
They know they can't win with facts, because the Climate Change Alarmists have none, so they have to insult.
Fortunately, most people stopped listening to their non-science a few years ago.
