They should have tried OPTION #3: UPDATE - An obvious third possibility that I should have included above: The House passes a short-term, totally clean debt ceiling hike, and the shutdown goes on. Would the Senate or the president actually block such an action?

UPDATE II - Intriguing, given the source:

----

How hard is this to figure out?! Write, call do whatever to make sure that your voice is heard, because if not they'll CAVE and take whatever McConnell-Reid give them!!

The Senate will decide this tomorrow. Mitch McConnel has already conceded to Harry Reid. The Constitution will be ignored.

Boehner didn't offer conservatives anything for the simple reason that he didn't want to pass a House debt limit bill.
That's indisputable.

Why?

I am betting Mitch Mconnell will NOT run for reelection...he knows he will get creamed at the voting booth...and will drop out at last moment.

the people of Kentucky will not return him to Washington, he is a disaster.
Harry Reid is a total embarrassment to the Country..hope his wife calls him to return home to take care of her or their cat or what ever..but we need to get rid of most of the Senate..

Thanks JSDude1.
Having hammered out a deal to shoot back to the Senate tonight -- with most Republicans reportedly on board... Then the medical device tax delay was stripped out, and the "full Vitter Amendment" (no special treatment under Obamacare for Congress, staffers, and White House officials) was inserted in... opposed to stalling or repealing the tax as part of this deal... The delay would look like another favor to big business rather than the little guy... would take the issue off the table as a Democrat-dividing maneuver for future negotiations...
Zero would and will veto anything, at all, that isn't 100 percent what he wants. But he will instead not get anything, and if he spends money without the Congress' (specifically, the House), he'll be engaged in (additional) impeachable offenses.

REPUBLICANS?? Are you listening?? HERE is your way out. Pass CLEAN BILLS for a CR, and for raising the Debt Limit for 90 days... contingent on ONE THING:

DELAY the ObamaCare Individual Mandate

NOTHING ELSE!

If you're going to shut down the government, and breach the debt limit, you DAMN WELL better be holding out for something the PEOPLE want!!! You can do well in politics fighting for things the PEOPLE WANT!

There is NO WAY to argue against this.. even Jon Stewart understands it. It's simply NOT FAIR to give employers a 1 year delay and NOT give individuals a 1 year delay.

NO WAY you can say, "we CAN'T change the law"... when, it's ALREADY been done... for BUSINESS.

THIS, is a winner... hold to it, let the chips fall where they may.

Shutdown does not appear to shut down anything but the parks.

Certainly does not shut down the bs.

What is wrong with default? As opposed to giving away newly printed cash we are not allowed to print today.

At some point, the balloon pops.

By not passing a House bill Boehner has given Mitch a chance to be a hero and save his reelection, and the country.

Hard to picture him that way but I can’t believe Boehner just sandbagged him.

Ah 20 house Rinos to vote with all the dems to pass whatever the senate comes up with...hmmm

Make them eat it and see how their reelection campaigns go next year. The stakes are pretty high, but no doubt they will cave. Ironic thing is they may lose their seats either way. Either libs or tea party will vote them out.

The way to replace the senate is to walk out, saying the republic is lost. It will give quick and substantial momentum to a states rights movement, which can save the constitution. We shouldn’t expect the people who shredded the constitution to restore it. DC will starve. We can start over.

There will be NO default on government debt backed by interest bearing instruments. There is more than enough tax revenue to cover those payments. The only way a default could happen on those debt payments is if the Treasury IGNORED/REFUSED to pay them. Now on obligations/promises made by the government not backed by any of those previously mentioned ‘instruments’ there can’t be any ‘default’ in the financial sense, only broken promises. Promises/obligations which mathematically were/are impossible to keep over time anyway. Better to face now the reality and the economic pain that must come rather than MUCH greater pain later.
