How is going to create democrats? The people that get the welfare are democrats already. The people paying for the welfare aren't interested in socialism.

Seeing as how everyone in NC has to reapply every month for benefits, they are basically stopping all payments.

New welfare applications will be denied. That means no new dependency. So this is good because it means no new democrats.

Unfortunately you’re wrong. More than a few FReepers have announced the loss of their sole means of support over the past few years.

Lord knows I know far too many conservatives who have been forced to the government trough. If it weren’t for the fact that I don’t have kids to think about I probably would be.

You’re like me. I’m dirt ass poor but I don’t have kids at home to worry about so I can go without a lot of things.

My attitude is that we would be far more effective eliminating the job killing regulatory agencies first and a lot of people will return to work on their own.

Also there’s the fact that if the GOP were ever bright enough to offer the choice to the true welfare bums, they’ll call for the elimination of every other agency in the country as long as they can keep their grub stubs. Sure the entitlements will have to be eliminated but we can use the addiction to entitlements to move the ball in the right direction. Hell, it might even spark a war between the liberal whites and their inner city slaves.

I got an update from a Kroger manager.

WIC (The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children) is slated to stop on Oct 18.

SNAP (EBT/Food Stamps) stops Nov 1.

I don’t yet have a deadline for:

Commodity Assistance Programs (CAP) including the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP);
The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP);
(CACFP)(School breakfast and lunch program);
Summer Food Service Program (SFSP);
Special Milk Program;
Senior Nutrition Programs, (Meals on Wheels) and senior congregate feeding programs.

Note that some of these programs were already depleted by sequestration, so will have to completely halt. Others have existing funds allocations, so may continue for a while.

aren’t welfare payments from the state?

Theoretically, but the funding comes almost entirely from the federales. It's mostly borrowed money. So if the debt ceiling is not raised, there will be no money to fund it. Even the administrative costs are picked up by the feds, but that is not considered "mandatory" spending, and so is affected by the "shutdown". There was leftover money from FY 2013, and they seem to be burning through that to fund the admin costs.

The bill to fund it is on Harry Reid’s table blocked by an unrecorded vote of Senate Democrats- already passed by the House.

See post 26.

I just think there’s a better way.

In fact while I’m on it, I think welfare could be turned into true welfare to work program. Start by cutting the benefits to base survival levels and offering to increase the benefits in return for community service type things. If they can work and don’t, give them a 6 month cutoff notice. Caseworkers should be encouraging them to want out of the system.

"More than 20,000 people - most of them children - receive monthly benefits aimed at helping them buy food and other basic supplies through North Carolina's welfare program, called Work First, which is fully funded by the federal government. Recipients must reapply each month."

Sure, children get the checks and go to the bank after reapplying each month.

” Start by cutting the benefits to base survival levels and offering to increase the benefits in return for community service type things.”

I’ve always wondered why they don’t force able bodied people to do some kind of community service for welfare...(but technically if they did community service for it, it wouldn’t technically be welfare anymore).

One thing I have noticed with the new trend of forcing high school students to do community service is that it seems to turn them into conservatives when they learn just how fat, lazy, and rude the people they are helping are. I asked one of my friends kids a few times what percentage of people who go to the free food giveaways etc are legitimately needy, and he estimates about 10% which he enjoys helping, but the other 90% he has utter contempt for.

That is pretty much how I evolved into a conservative. When I was a senior in college, I got in trouble for a little bit of glug glug, vroom vroom, and had to do community service. At the time I had 18 units of 400 level engineering classes, I worked 20 hours a week, and I even donated plasma twice a week for beer money, and then on top of that I did my volunteering on saturday and sunday mornings at a soup kitchen in downtown Seattle. It wasn’t hard work, separate good and bad food, clean dishes, set up tables, whatever needed doing, but I could just never understand how these 4 or 5 dozen people could shamble in every day, get free food, then shamble out, and not even have the courtesy to bus their own plates...why couldn’t any of these people contribute an hour or two of their time to this place?
