A 17-year-old North Andover High School student was stripped of her captain's position on the volleyball team and suspended for five games after she went to a party to pick up an intoxicated friend, reports The Boston Herald.

Erin Cox received a call from a friend, who was allegedly intoxicated, and asked her to pick her up from a party on Main Street in Boxford. Being a good friend, Erin went to pick her up, but instead met police just as they arrived at the house, the newspaper reports.

If true, this sounds like an overreaction from the school.

I also wonder if this young lady is being thoroughly truthful.

What exactly do you think the victim is lying about?

that is stupid

I told my kids if they were ever in that situation, I didn’t care where it was or what time, call me and I will come get them.

A lawyer friend of mine went to pick up his daughter in just that situation right about the time the cops pulled up and started treating the kids like criminals. He told the cop “I am her lawyer, she’s got nothing to say and she is coming with me.”

Another lawyer friend of mine driving past a party in his neighborhood saw the cops so stopped and went up to the door. The cops told him “it’s none of your business” He said “I am a lawyer and I will make it my business” and then told them “these are good kids and leave them alone” It was in a town where the cops actually listened, the kids called their parents and got picked up.

Now, as a parent, my kids had parties with written or phone invitations only, no tag a longs and I was all over it. Sometimes parties at restaurants or clubs. I have no patience with parents who buy underage kids beer or booze.

Natural consequence of “Zero Common Sense” policies.

As one who lost a niece to a drunk driver and as a lifelong resident of the Gay State this story enrages me...but doesn't surprise me in the least.

This is the type of nonsense that is the unavoidable result of the “It-Takes-a-Villiage” philosophy and the Nanny-state school system that has been promulgated throughout our entire society. In saner times, this would have been a parenting issue and none of the school’s business in the first place. Liberals don’t see schools as being institutions of learning, but rather as tools for tools for social engineering. The all-encompassing schools of their youth are intended to teach our children to bow before the all-encompassing government that awaits in their future.

From the article: By punishing Erin Cox, the North Andover School District sends a contrary and very dangerous message – that young people are better off not letting their friends drive drunk.

I don't think the word "not" belongs there.

I heard a spokesperson for the school district interviewed on the radio. Apparently there is a high school athletic association that has the strict zero-tolerance policy that forces this well-meaning kid to be deprived of her team captain position and the five game suspension. That doesn’t make it more reasonable but it does help to locate the responsibility for the madness.

Perfect. So now instead of keeping drunk drivers off the road, you will have kids refusing to pick up their friends, because they will be punished as well.

It seems they would rather have someone die.

Was the party on school property?
Was the party a school sponsored event?
Was the party during school hours?
Did the party have anything what so ever to do with the school?
Did the parents sign some kind of contract with the school, forbidding the student from this?

If no to all of these thing, sue the pants off the school.

If yes that it was a school sponsored event, sue the pants off the school and personally sue the principal, vice principal, dean of students, school superintendent, district superintendent and entire school board.

More likely you just have a bunch of cowardly petty tyrants in the school. Ones who use “zero tolerance” as an excuse to excercise punative, vindictive authority without the requisite responsibility for the decision.

Also, you probably have some tyrants walking in the darkness of their own wickedness that hate light bearers like this girl and were looking for a way to take her down a notch.

I have another question: WHY were cops from **FOUR** jurisdictions raiding a party in one of the jurisdictions ??

Simple. The cops all wanted to get a look at some hot, rich, teenage tail.

I’d add one more to that list: Being 17, does Erin have a ‘Cinderella license’, and did she drive after legal hours? Unfortunately, the school could potentially use that against her if that’s the case.

Not the schools business or responsibility. Not a school event. School has no say.

What's next? A school's zero policy against church events? A school's zero policy against gun ownership in ones own home?

“Natural consequence of “Zero Common Sense” policies.”

Zero Tolerance is a stance designed by administrators to avoid having to make difficult decisions.

Taken to extremes, we could replace all administrators with a simple computer program. There are no extenuating circumstances. All decisions are binary.

Of course it's none of the school's business, but such are the wages of tyranny in the name of 'the children'.

This used to be a free country ...
