Lindsey Graham Is Getting Another Challenger
fitsnews.com ^ | 10/15/13

Posted on 10/16/2013 5:16:38 AM PDT by cotton1706

Liberal U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham (RINO-S.C.) is getting another challenger … but it’s not one of the big name fiscal conservatives being courted by national limited government groups.

Orangeburg, S.C. attorney Bill Connor – who ran for lieutenant governor in 2010 and SCGOP chairman in 2011 (unsuccessfully on both occasions) – is reportedly jumping into the race in the next few days.

We’ve written previously on the speculation surrounding Connor’s bid, but multiple grassroots sources tell FITS he is getting ready to pull the trigger. Connor’s prospective candidacy received a major kiss on the lips from The South Carolina Conservative, a blog written by GOP activist Javan Browder.

“Connor may be uniquely able to take Graham on and undercut his main base of support, the military/veteran block, and give Graham serious trouble on foreign policy matters in debate, something the other candidates lack the credentials and experience to do,” Browder writes.

BILL CONNOR He adds that “Connor is well liked and respected among the grassroots across the state, and being the only candidate to have previously run a statewide race could give him the edge with name recognition and organization if he enters the race.”

Hmmmm … that’s a pretty rosy assessment for a guy who got pummeled in his last race by this doofus.

“Connor also garners a lot of support from the Christian conservative and pro-life portions of the GOP electorate, likely giving him the widest overall GOP voter appeal of any of the Graham challengers,” Browder continues.

Really? We’ll have to see about that …

We don’t view the glad-handing Connor as a top tier candidate, but that doesn’t mean his candidacy could create problems for Graham.

Why? Because Connor is – as he is fond of pointing out ad nauseam – a combat veteran.

“Connor is perfectly suited to attack Graham on perhaps his most glaring vulnerability – the lies he told about his military service during the early stages of his political career,” we wrote recently.

Accordingly, his (likely) entry into the race is worth watching …

Graham is already facing three primary challengers – S.C. Sen. Lee Bright (R-Spartanburg), Lowcountry businesswoman Nancy Mace and Upstate social conservative businessman Richard Cash.

The more the merrier! More republicans in the primary makes it harder for Little Lindsey to reach 50% and thus, there will be a runoff between Graham and a conservative (likely Lee Bright).

Then, we remove Lindsey from power.

I don’t agree. Graham has all the money. All of these other candidates are going to split what’s left. Graham squeakes by with 52%.

“Graham has all the money. All of these other candidates are going to split what’s left. Graham squeaks by with 52%.”

Yeah, I think that’s a real possibility. Therefore, the more candidates against Graham, the better for Graham, because they split the opposition-to-Graham vote. Why can’t they all get together and have their own informal Anti-Graham Caucus, and pick one candidate?

South Carolina primaries are a "run-off" format. If no one gets 50% in the first vote, there is a run-off between the top two vote getters. LG isn't even close to 50% right now! So ... expect Linda Graham to be sounding like David Dewhurst around next June ....

I disagree. Yes Graham has tons of money, but do you honestly think he can get to 50% in a 5 man race in this political climate? And he’ll have to spend a ton of his cash in TWO elections just to get the nomination.

And he’s exceedingly arrogant. He won’t be able to help himself. He thinks himself all high and mighty and the people will say “anybody else!”

You would be wrong. SC has a run-off election. If any of the 5 or 6 candidates does NOT get 50%+ of the vote, then the top two vote getters go to run-off.

It's not a presidential election.

First they have to deny Graham a first round win in the primary, that probably means the more challengers the better. Force him into a runoff and then all the weak hands are eliminated and someone has a good chance to take the nomination in the runoff.

Cruz beat Dewhurst like a rented mule in the run-off election because of all the other candidates pulling votes from Dewhurst in the first vote.

Not going to happen. The ads running against Graham have dropped his approval rating from 74% to 41%. South Carolina had a liberal RINO - Bob Inglis - who was defeated in the primary runoff by 71% to 27%. Trey Gowdy beat him handily. Graham is in big trouble.

“Connor is perfectly suited to attack Graham on perhaps his most glaring vulnerability – the lies he told about his military service during the early stages of his political career,” we wrote recently.

Graham's most glaring vulnerability is his position on issues important to conservatives. If Connor can't battle him on those then step back and let the other two conservative candidates do it.

Yes, the National Republican Liberty Caucus.

FYI, this is the group that helped propel Cruz, Lee and Paul to victories in their primaries....which were all considered long shots at one time as well. Now look what’s happened.....those three are major national players. The RLC has studied all the SC candidates - and looks at Bright as the next member of this group of modern revolutionaries.

As long as the challengers direct all “negative” ads in Little Lindsey’s direction (which would be well deserved), and not at one another, this can turn out to be very good.

Speaking of McCain, the last time the SC military vote just sort of threw all in based on voting for the guy with the military service, it was for McCain in the 2008 Presidential primary.

.....and we see how well that turned out.

I think any thinking that this block vote is going to behave just as they did in the 08 primary is just false.....very conventional, which is to say, behind the times. A primary electorate is now more informed than ever before.....
