A new memoir by his ex-girlfriend sheds light on the cult of Steve Jobs.
Albert Watson
Chrisann Brennan first met Steve Jobs in 1972, while they were both students at Homestead HS in Cupertino, Calif. Over the next five years, they dated off and on throughout their teens and early 20s. The two were living together with their friend Daniel Kottke, a computer engineer and one of the earliest employees of Apple, in 1977, when the company took off.
The two finally ended their romantic relationship for good in late 1977, after Brennan became pregnant with their daughter, Lisa. Brennan worked as a waitress and collected welfare checks to support herself and their baby daughter. Modal Trigger
Chrisann Brennan was Jobs first girlfriend.
Jobs publicly denied he was Lisas father for years, even though he took a paternity test in 1979 proving he was the dad. He was paying $500 a month in child support when he told Time magazine in 1983, 28 percent of the male population in the United States could be the father.
Today, Brennan is a painter and graphic designer living in Monterey, Calif., and Lisa is a Harvard-educated journalist.
Here, in an exclusive excerpt from Brennans first-person tale, The Bite in the Apple: A Memoir of My Life With Steve Jobs (on sale Oct. 29), she describes her frustrating, difficult and passionate years with the business visionary

Go monthly!!
I wouldn't name a kid Modal Trigger, but whatever ...
Life Rule #137: Don’t be a jerk
Life Rule #138: Don’t have exes
I agree. Modala sounds more feminine.
I wonder if she would have gotten into Harvard if her last name wasn’t Jobs?
Maybe if Jobs was a responsible father she would have had no motive to be equally public.
Many people who are professional victors are moral failures.
Sounds like her name is Lisa from my reading. Modal Trigger just seems to be inserted in the middle of the piece.
CC
Yeah, let’s dish on the dead guy who can’t defend himself.
Sick.
Yeah, well, “He was paying $500 a month in child support when he told Time magazine in 1983,”
What a prince!, especially since he knew the child was his.
I don’t blame the woman here...Maybe he didn’t owe her specifically and he probably did not but he DID owe his daughter, especially back then.
Hot off the presses from 36 years ago !!
What IS a modal trigger?
She is copying Steve Jobs entrepreneurial spirit
I hope she makes a ton of money on this book. She will make even more since she was smart enough to wait for Steve Jobs to die. He is not around to direct his flunkies to refute parts of it and assassinate her via gossip he has his flunkies spread
No one else is writing such a personal book on Steve Jobs. So she has this market all to herself
Sounds like her name is Lisa from my reading. Modal Trigger just seems to be inserted in the middle of the piece.
Story is, the original Apple Lisa (old, very old, very expensive for the time Mac) was named after her.
Another case of an ex cashing in for dishing out...
All this was 35 years ago, and the principle player is dead. Time to leave it be.
Yep he named it after his first daughter LIsa Nicole Brennan. However Modal Trigger might have been a cooler name for the puter.
Reading about Job’s life, is knowledge about what a life is like without God.
Some guy releasing a book claiming that he had a pervert love affair with Jobs in 3...2...1
LOL, Modal Trigger has to do with coding and popups. It is not the girl’s name, which is Lisa.
Charming.
Anyone paying attention knows that Jobs has always been a lousy guy.
Gates is more widely reviled, but except for some unpopular business practices, he does appear to be much more of a genuinely decent man.
Would Modal Trigger be a good porn star name?
I hope her book slams him good, I’ve no use for a low life who denies his own child.
Doesn’t matter how rich and successful he was, there is no defense for such, dead or alive.
Many think this guy was some sort of a hero, perhaps the rest of the story, should be heard, if she profits fine, but it seems she made her own way, and took good care of their daughter despite the dead beat dad.
“Would Modal Trigger be a good porn star name?”
I dunno, but I think “Hair Trigger” would be a bad nickname for a guy.
I’m sure his daughter appreciated having a losing product named after her.
:)
No, the paternity test in 1979 did not "prove" that he was the father. It just raised the likelihood.
He was more than just a lousy guy. He was a first rate asshole. Without Wozniak and technology created by Xerox, jobs would have been little more than a carnival barker. He probably wouldn’t have even been that the way he screwed over anyone he could.
Yes the testing back then was generic. They could prove this beyond a shadow today.
In any event, Jobs should have upped the $500 per month to $5000 in 1984 when AAPL went public. Maybe he did.
I guess this guy was a genius with computers and such. But as a human being he was a despicable jerk!!!
One can only imagine how that made his daughter feel. What a jerk.
Modal Trigger? Seriously?
“Gates is more widely reviled, but except for some unpopular business practices, he does appear to be much more of a genuinely decent man.”
Think again. There have been some adverse stories about his relationships with his ex-girlfriends, but those stories seem to have been purged by the search engines. In particular, there were news stories about a girlfriend at Microsoft Corp. about the same time Gates was dating Melissa French. Strange thing is how the search engines don’t seem to be able to find any references to that soured affair.
There was nothing particularly decent about the way Bill Gates conducted some of his other personal affairs. His father was a well connected and prosperous attorney in Democrat controlled Seattle. Nonetheless, Bill Gates steals the software programming from a dumpster and uses it to gain money from a contract for programming Seattle traffic lights. As the head of Microsoft Gates has continued this pattern of software theft and used the resulting financial gains to payoff hundreds of billions of dollars in court judgements and out of court settlements for Microsoft’s illegal copying of other people’s copyrighted and patented software.
After Microsoft was first started in Arizona with the assistance of a physician friend, Bill Gates got into trouble when he and his friend were arrested for trespassing and playing with some earth moving equipment in some childish playying around. Bill Gates also faced charges for not paying his traffic fines. Instead, he skipped out on his physician partner, denying his partner the future wealth to come from the success of Microsoft which Gates used his father’s influence to move from Arizona to Washington. The search engines used to have Bill Gate’s police booking photograph available.
That’s an education! Thanks! Still, Jobs was a bigger lowlife.
It is sort of a computer programming term.
No. But, the ultimate porn star name is "Buck Nekkid".
And BTW...why is every actor or actress who does a porn film called a porn 'star'? Are they all that good?
It had to be a blood test back then. DNA tests were very fallible and very new.
If it was a blood test, it cannot prove paternity. It could only prove he wasn't the father. It could not prove that he was.
The 28% figure he stated indicates it was very likely a blood test.
Just a joke.
There used to be a good short book about how he created MicroSoft that really told the dirt on his initial path to success. It was on the www for a while but I don’t know if it is still out there.
Yeh I knew. I was joking too. :-)
