MADISON – After more than an hour of political ping pong Tuesday, with the taxpayer playing the familiar role of ball, most Senate Democrats agreed with Republicans that a $100 million property tax cut was too good a deal to pass up.
Or, perhaps, political suicide to turn it down.
Last week, Democrats gave Gov. Scott Walker and legislative Republicans an earful after Walker called a special session to pass a $100 million property tax cut last week. Mike Tate, chairman of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, called the tax cut a “gimmick.”
Sen. President Mike Ellis, R-Neenah, excoriated senate Democrats for being Janus-faced on the bill and “triple-dared” them to vote against it to match their rhetoric.
“Today we have a chance to give the taxpayers a small break. I admit it is not a massive amount, but it is better than raising their property taxes” in 2009 and 2010-11, Ellis said of previous tax hikes under a Democrat majority.
“I am willing to go door to door throughout my district, proud to say that I finally stopped the bleeding on the middle class when it comes to property taxes,” he said.
On Tuesday, lawmakers unanimously passed the bill out of the Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee before it was sent over to the Senate.
The bill passed in the Senate 28-5. The bill on Thursday is expected to be debated in the Republican-controlled Assembly, where it is expected to pass, before it heads to Walker’s desk. Walker is ready with his pen.
EXTRA CHEESE: A $100 million property tax bill passed Tuesday in the Senate will trim about $33 off the typical property tax bill over the next two years – the price of a decent cheese and sausage plate.

Remember when the Dems all said how much of a DISASTER WI would be if Walker Succeeded?
Should WI be boiling in lava by now?
Scott Walker has done some great things in Wisconsin. The liberals went all in to force him out of office in that recall election, and he was elected by a bigger margin in the recall election than in his first election.
Walker’s case is a good case study in fighting back against the liberals. We can win these battles against the liberals if we don’t cave in.
We know that, our “representatives” in DC need to learn it. I think a good many of them just don’t care, there’s too much in it for them personally if they toe the line. To think that the Father of our country, Washington, just wanted to go home after his term of public service. And that after serving it honorably in unrenumerative positions.
One of those rare instances in which a GOPer pushes relentlessly... and wins.
Congrats to Gov. Walker and the people of Wisconsin.
The best part of this story is that they will be able to return more than $600 million to the rainy day fund which the previous Governor depleted and more. Not only did he deplete the rainy day fund, he stole from the roads fund, the DNR, and the Physicians’ malpractice insurance fund.
But, that’s $100 million that the State can’t use to infringe on your liberty.
I need to mention that the previous (spendthrift) Governor was a D****d Democrat!
Considering that the surplus was twice as big as they anticipated, I would have hoped that they’d return 200 million to the taxpayers, but I’m not complaining. Luv ya, Scott!
Does anyone remember what the controversy was during the early Bush years when the Dems’ mocking talking-point was, “It’s only the cost of a cheeseburger?” was that one of the Bush tax cuts or tax rebates? I think it was something along those lines, and I was thinking, “If it’s only the cost of a cheeseburger, I guess the government can figure out a way to get by without it.”
To ANY Democrat, cutting taxes is always a "gimmick". Tax INCREASES on the other hand . . .
So what does that average out to per property? If 1 million properties you get $100 back - woo hoo - err wait only $100?
And $100M returned to the local economy instead of being wasted on things that work to cripple it.
They’re giving something close to $100 million back to the school districts, too! (Can you see if that’s correct?)
The blue-fisted Teacher’s Union is deeply saddened. NOT.
But will they say, “Thank You, Governor Walker!” Highly unlikely.
They’ve been pretty quiet as of late...
I donated a couple of hundred to Scott Walker during the recall fight a couple of years ago and while I live in PA, I feel like I've gotten every cent repaid ten times over.
I hate the Packers but gubbernor Walker has made me proud to be a partial cheezehead.
Wisconsin lawmakers have given the liberals fits, crushed the union goons, and are watching as their economy improves...good going Walker and all WI conservatives, keep it up.
That last part gives liberals fits more than anything else.... to be proven dead wrong. That economy's growing and they can't do a damned thing to stop it. HA!
