Not that it really matters right now, but I don't believe they will go for single payer. I think they will go for single provider, with forced compliance. The difference is that the "premiums" will be absurdly expensive, and the political class (R and D alike) will use exemptions and deductions to control the populace.

This would be even more evil than single payer, so I believe that is the eventual goal of Obama, McCain, etc.
