Boehner Statement on Bipartisan Senate Agreement to Reopen Government, Avoid Default
Speaker of the House of Representatives ^ | Wednesday, October 16, 2013 | John Boehner

Posted on 10/16/2013 12:35:14 PM PDT by kristinn

WASHINGTON, DC – House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) released the following statement regarding the bipartisan Senate agreement to reopen the federal government and avoid a national default:

“The House has fought with everything it has to convince the president of the United States to engage in bipartisan negotiations aimed at addressing our country's debt and providing fairness for the American people under ObamaCare. That fight will continue. But blocking the bipartisan agreement reached today by the members of the Senate will not be a tactic for us. In addition to the risk of default, doing so would open the door for the Democratic majority in Washington to raise taxes again on the American people and undo the spending caps in the 2011 Budget Control Act without replacing them with better spending cuts. With our nation's economy still struggling under years of the president's policies, raising taxes is not a viable option. Our drive to stop the train wreck that is the president's health care law will continue. We will rely on aggressive oversight that highlights the law's massive flaws and smart, targeted strikes that split the legislative coalition the president has relied upon to force his health care law on the American people.”

Unfortunately, it’s the best that could be expected given the current makeup of Congress.

B$. It is exactly what most of us expected, but hardly the best that could be expected. Every Conservative that fought the good fight should switch to the democratic party, let the GOPe try and rule from the minority position. They could then have a new leadership vote, would be interesting for sure.

It’s long been the case that the President typically leads on the budget, so not a shocker there unfortunately. But, they are weakened now.

... blocking the bipartisan agreement ... would open the door for the Democratic majority in Washington to raise taxes ..."

Do you expect anyone to believe that, Boehner?

Your caucus controls the House.

There is no risk of default. It’s a fake, but Obama and the Dems are the biggest losers.

The side note is that the GOPe is working to undermine the conservative base. They do that and it’s Democrats all the way.

Are you taking your ball home, too?

Obamacare is a wreck.

The fight begins anew in February. The debt isn’t going away.

If the numbers are true then the CR is for the lower end of spending.

We need to keep fighting and win the Congress in 2014. Then the real fun begins.

Keep in mind the entire reason that Obama and Co. came up with this strategy out of desperation.

Extends debt ceiling through Feb 7(Bammy wanted a year)
FEDGUVINC is funded through Jan 15.
A new conference set up for long term entitlement reform headed by Paul Ryan and Patty Murray(starts Dec 13)
If no cuts are decided on, sequestrations remains in effect (a good thing-they really kick in Jan. 2014)

Not the worst possible outcome considering Cruz NEVER had the numbers.

This was a given, which is why I didn’t pay much attention to this shutdown, just sat and waited for the end.

I’m tired of the fearmongering about democrats winning in the House. In Obama’s 6 year midterm? Zero% chance of that. Zero. The President’s party gains in a midterm only when the President is very popular and even then they gain slightly.

BTW Boehner, bending to his will probably won’t hurt his popularity, numbnuts. How did Clinton do when Newt bent over? Hmm?

I don’t know what they are supposed to do if they don’t have the votes.

Don't you hate it when the introductory sentence contains a brazen, shameless lie?

"The legislative coalition the president has relied upon to force his health care law on the American people.”

Which we now know includes up to 25 members of the Republican Minority in the Senate and and an equal number in the House.

Excellent point.

What a damned cry baby liar! The democrats can’t raise taxes without the house. Does he not know that all spending must originate in the house? That the house is supposed to control the purse? What he just did was gave obama complete dictatorial powers.

They must have so much dirt on him it’s sickening. They’ve go so much dirt they’ve told that even if he resigns they’ll destroy him. That’s what we get for electing crooks and creeps.

Pelosi has already said which democrats will be allowed to vote “no” for re-election purposes.

Go ahead and fight all you want. I am through! The republicans can all join the Rats for all I care.

There is absolutely no difference between the 2 parties, none.

What is the use of having a majority if you are not willing to use it and stand your ground!

Sorry, but this whole tactic was doomed to fail.

Yes it was doomed to fail, but not for the reasons you think. I said from the beginning even before it was passed and even when many here believed the Supreme Court would knock it down, that it would be the law because most of the GOPe wanted it, period.

RE :”This was a given, which is why I didn’t pay much attention to this shutdown, just sat and waited for the end.”

That was a given before it even started. I couldn't resist posting here during the fight but once the shutdown started I knew to keep my predictions to myself, till ~ 10pm last night.

It was all just too obvious.

RE :”BTW Boehner, bending to his will probably won’t hurt his popularity, numbnuts. How did Clinton do when Newt bent over? Hmm?”

Good intro for my point.
I listen to Levin every night his first half hour and last night he was prepping his audience for this by spinning that the GOP coming cave was Obama illegally taking over power from congress, a 'constitutional crisis', not kidding.

Now tonight Levin is ripping Bohner.
Buuuut leading up to this fight (Oct 1) he was working his audience and his listening house members by romanticizing Newts shutdown not mentioning that he caved just like Bohner did now. It was glorious to see Clinton at Newts knees.

So Newt did it 20 years ago and it was glorious, Bohner did it now and tonight he called it a ‘disaster’
How time flies on talk radio LOL.

It was a disaster
