TORONTOCanada's government said Wednesday it will introduce a law requiring a balanced budget during normal economic times. Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Conservative government announced the proposed law in a speech in Parliament that outlines the government's priorities for a new session of the House of Commons.
The government said it will introduce concrete timelines for restoring a balanced budget after an economic crisis.
The government said the deficit is less than forecast and it plans to balance the budget by 2015.
Harper has been in power since 2007. He has managed to nudge an instinctively center-left country to the right, gradually lowering sales and corporate taxes, avoiding climate change legislation and promoting Arctic sovereignty.

Stark contrast isn’t it?
Time to sell the guns, learn to keep one’s mouth shut and move to Canada.
Just like the Democrats did in the 60's
Although I heard like 30,000 Deserters went to Canada during Vietnam to avoid the draft. And like 30,000 Canadians signed up in the American Armed Forces to serve in Vietnam (my Father served with one) so they gave back too.
Idiocy. Balanced budgets result in one thing ... raised taxes.
Pure unadulterated idiocy.
Meanwhile, ours just signed up for a 4,171st mortgage and a new AmEx Polonium card. Screw responsibility, there are votes to buy and favors to pay off.
Whatever Canada’s doing, it seems to be working a hell of a lot better than our clown college of Ruling Class buffoons.
It’s getting harder and harder to be proud of this country any more. I still am, but not like I was back in ‘88.
I would like to hear more about the Canadian volunteers.
Not likely for the next 3.
I was just thinking the other day, half jokingly, that Canada is looking better and better every day. After today, maybe it isn't half jokingly anymore. It's a bit colder up there, depending on where you live, but you don't have the racial B.S. that is fully ingrained here. I don't like thinking this way, though.
It probably will work as well as our “debt ceiling” law.
Politicians will find a way around it.
