Right-wing nuts nab new way to sabotage Obamacare
Salon ^ | 17 Oct 2013 | By David Dayen

The final deal to avert a breach of the debt limit and end the government shutdown included what has been described as a “small concession” to Republicans: tightening the income verification measures for customers on the Obamacare insurance exchanges to qualify for subsidies. But considering the hurdles associated with this step – and the enormous IT problems we’ve already seen with the exchanges – the concession may not be small at all.

As one prominent health care expert tells Salon, the impact could contribute to an attempted sabotage of the law by those who want to see it repealed. Rather than letting the health care law survive “unscathed,” the income verification piece could trigger a new round of headaches for Obamacare, and this time, Republicans – and the country – will be paying attention.

---SNIP---

Starr’s perspective is borne by the early experience of the exchanges. The federal exchange, which is the Obamacare portal for customers in 34 states, has performed very badly in the opening weeks. Even supporters of the law like the Washington Post’s Ezra Klein has called the rollout a disaster. Not only have potential customers been unable to register for the program after 20 or 30 attempts, those few who have been successful aren’t having their data transferred to insurance companies properly.

“Things are worse behind the curtain than in front of it,” according to health care writer Bob Laszlewski, describing how the system is enrolling and unenrolling customers seemingly at random. If HHS can’t approve subsidies until the Inspector General decides income verification is operational, that would definitely delay subsidies – nothing is operational about the federal exchanges right now.

And you have to question whether income verification would ever be operational, and if that’s contributing to the major delays on the exchange website...

The best thing Republicans can do know is leave Obamacare alone. Let it implode, let the people see what a disaster it is, and let them feel the pain.

Yes, it means we have to feel the pain too and we have to suffer the onerous beast, but in the end Republicans can stand back as the 2016 elections roll around and say “See, we told you what would happen, now elect us and let us fix it.”

Evil conservatives won't let us commit fraud at will.

“See, we told you what would happen, now elect us and let us fix it.”

Like social security?

Libs oppose verification for two reasons:
1. Verification will expose illegal immigrants signing up to get 0bamacare and
2. Verification will expose fat cats getting subsidies they don't deserve.

So is this a setup to blame conservatives for why Obamacare is imploding?

the best thing 'pubs can do now is leave Obamacare alone

What Rubio did, getting in front of the rollout of Obamacare was brilliant. Now there's no question, Obama owns Obamacare.

A person smarter than Obama would've compromised with the 'pubs and delayed the mandate. Now Obama can't get away with saying he wasn't aware of the problems or blame anyone else.

Income verification is required for any other service or commodity, why not health care?

On the other hand, King Hussein Obama will just waive the requirement.

Verifying income is an attempt to kill Obamacare? Only a liberal would say that. If this program was run correctly, verifying income is what would make it work....sort of like a bank verifying income before making a loan.....so a loan program could stay viable

The problem is, even now income is not going to be verified. The feds will eventually just start giving the healthcare policies away...my prediction....to anyone who logs on (Laws be damn!!!). Eventually, the Dems will scream we need to raise everyones taxes 50% to pay for national healthcare....or don’t you love babies, grandma, and minorites? It’s that simple and we all know it.

Thinking about your “why not” question leads me to parallel it with the “why not” of valid ID to vote. They intend to commit and promote fraud in both systems.

Actually, now Mitch McConnell owns obamacare. Ted Cruz defeated obamacare before he was stabbed in the back by the Republican Party.

Just as likely the RATS will convince people that it’s the evil insurance companies fault, and vote to let the government skip the middle men and give everybody “free” health care.
