Skip to comments.Historic documents may be burned if Harvard does not cough up cash

If Rufus McDonald were white, you'd already know his name, and he'd be on the path to pushing George Zimmerman aside as the most hated man in America. But because he is black, you probably have never heard of him, unless you live in Chicago. You see, Mr. McDonald was cleaning out an attic and discovered some papers. As Kim Janssen of the Chicago Sun-Times reported Tuesday:
Hidden in a dusty trunk in an abandoned and looted Englewood home, the papers of Harvard's first black graduate, Richard T. Greener, had long been thought lost to history. (snip)
Several museums and Harvard University itself expressed a keen interest in the historically significant 140-year-old Greener documents. An excited Gates, who leads Harvard's W.E.B. DuBois Institute for African-American Research, even said the discovery gave him "gooseflesh."
But now McDonald says the irreplaceable collection could go up in flames - literally.
McDonald - who recently sold just two of the documents for $52,000 to the University of South Carolina, where Greener also studied and taught - is threatening to torch the rest unless Harvard offers him more cash.

I’d do the same. Harvard has billions in its endowments, it they want to increase their “black street cred” they need to pay up or else....
Selling historical documents for money is perfectly legal. Calling this man names, that he is envious and greedy, is absurd in the extreme. He sounds like a capitalist who is demanding a fair price for finding treasure.
“McDonald apparently is so consumed by greed and envy that he would rob posterity of these documents.”
Bull. Harvard must get realistic, though that’s probably asking too much.
the Chicago way.........
It’s called “Property Rights”, or do we still have those in this country?
He needs to get some business advice from the family of MLK. but that would cost him BIG $$$$.
One appraiser said the documents were worth $65,000. Harvard offered $7,500. If they are “priceless”, then Harvard can afford to offer the appraised price, and stop trying to take advantage of the guy.
Whose property? No mention that Harvard ever had title to the papers.
I assume it belongs to Mr. McDonald.
Ok, just wanted to be sure. Mr. McDonald has possession with no publicized claims to the counter. The papers are his to do with as he pleases.
There is a bit of double standard at work, though. A white man doing the same is unthinkable.
Harvard cab afford it. they probably want a “donation”, though.
people are consumed by the idea of money
the idea that if he simply donated them in an honorable fashion say with a ceremony that the unseen hand of God would reward him
BS; their endowment fund has billions. They just won’t spend it. There is no reason for their tuition to be where it is.
Gee, they’ve been missing for hundred years and somehow life has gone on? F him. Burn ‘em.
He received $52,000 for 2 documents-
The article NEVER mentions:
A. how many documents there are - A full trunk ?
B. what Harvard has offered for them- ?
C. How he can claim ownership over an “abandoned” property
D. what he is currently asking/wanting for the rest of the
E. Just what’s IN THE DOCUMENTS- ?- TARDY slips?
pretty lame article- other than this guy thinks he hit
the Lucky Motherload.
Use them for toilet paper.
If he was smart he would hype them to the rich academic liberals and then put them up for auction. Marketing 101 could get him millions...oh yeah...who cares about the first black/white whatever but a racist?
from a looted home....think jail
Well, the “unseen hand of God” may not support him in his old age....
he purchased the papers, albeit not known at the time...They belong to him to do with as he wishes...
He’s not going to burn the papers. That would be the same as burning money.
If he doesn’t succeed in extorting money from Harvard, he will try something else.
He needs to be talking to some high-end auction houses.
he didn’t loot the house...I heard the story on the radio this morning...he purchased the house and all it’s contents at auction...The papers were appraised at $65,000. Harvard offered $7,500...Barely 1/10th the appraised value...
Will you sell me your car at 1/10th the appraisal????
You’re basing your strong opinions on a short article? And you’ve already decided Harvard is in the wrong?
It’s the FR way.
Guess they're not goose-pimple inducing enough for any of them to reach into their own pockets for a change.
I thought so, too. However, if I had the chance to screw over Harvard, I'd certainly take it. Look how they've screwed us over.
Well, as far as I'm concerned, let the free market take its course. They seem to be his property, so I don't care if he wraps them in a Koran, pisses on them both, and then burn them
well God is supposed to provide.......
I doubt if he gets money he will invest it an IRA. He will buy a Mercedes and ride around trying to pick up women
Who cares? If he is the legal owner then burn them. His threats prove that they have no meaning other than money to him as a black. Why should anyone else care? It’s all about ‘mo money’ anyway, it always is.
The radio story this morning stated he is an elderly gentleman...
well he thinks like an extortionist
Oh - don’t ruin the opportunity for some good old fashioned class envy. Harvard is BAD. The wonderful man who found papers in an abandoned building is good.
"Mention extortion again, and I'll have your legs broken."
Harvard offered little more than 10 cents on the appraised dollar for his property!!!!!
How about you sell me your property for 10% of the value???
if I did demand a certain buyer purchase it and the buyer said well we really are not interested but I’ll give you 10% and I said then I’ll burn it, whadya bet they would say hey, it’s yours to do with what you want go right ahead?
the dude has no right to try to force a particular buyer to pay his price
obviously, Harvard isn’t interested
Agreed. The threat to burn them is extortion. Legal extortion, since he owns them, but burning them would be a crime against history.
One issue here us that there are two parts to the value of the papers. One is that they are verifiable physical originals. The other is that they contain unknown (?) content. Once the content is known, they really just become prestige pieces for a collection.
If I were him I wouldnt burn them but rather threaten to auction the things slowly, one at a time.
According to the radio story earlier this morning. When the man made it known what he posessed, Harvard approached him...They said they really wanted the documents and diaries...They have been in discussion over this for some time. There is more to the story than just this lame piece from American Thinker...
I don’t blame the man...he purcheased the house and all its belongings...The papers were there and are now his property...If Harvard wants them like they claim and they approached him, he can ask any price he wishes or do with them as he wishes... It’s what is known as private property rights.
Fool’s gold. Inherently worthless. Only value comes from someone who says the first black guy’s paperwork is worth something. When this fascination with black history as such is over, the papers will again be worthless. Better get what he can get while the getting’s good.
Collector’s items are only worth what someone else will pay for them. Plenty of beanie baby owners figuring that out the last couple years...
Really?? WTF?? Says who? He may fail to get his price, but to say he has no right to try? Sheesh.
I’m basing my “strong” opinion on the existing marketplace for historical documents.
Harvard is like most elites: very, very cheap.
And your views are based on experience? You went to Harvard?
Why don’t someone just get in touch with Obama? I heard he can have historical documents made.
“And your views are based on experience? You went to Harvard?”
Harvard and Yale endowments are exempt from the 5% rule for some reason. They have the cash and I’d say those papers would and should be worth it to them.
Threatening to torch the docs is a sign that this guy is definitely Chicago material.
Harvard is always wrong, that is established fact.
They should pony up the appraised value and these documents are definitely historic enough. I bet this guy was either dumb as a rock or brilliant enough to make today’s schools and not just black students look like morons.
Either way would be racist I guess. Maybe Harvard will buy them and burn them?
So Harvard has been very cheap in its dealings with you? How so?
And you’re pretty sure that the man who buys old abandoned houses and tries to sell the contents is an upright and honest man? You’re taking his word for the value of documents apparently.
Taking a strong stand on right or wrong based on a short news article is a common occurrence around here.
In fairness, Harvard provides financial aid to almost 70% of undergraduates. Of those undergraduates, the median payment for tuition, room and board, books, and travel by families receiving financial aid is a little less than $15,000 per year. Median financial aid from Harvard is currently about $45K per year.
Financial aid at Harvard doesn't phase out completely until family income is nearly a quarter million dollars per year.
Families with income of $65,000 or less, their kids go free, save for the required summer work/term-time work study for each student (each student must work to contribute roughly $5,000 per year to his education, unless his family is very poorly-off, and he must contribute his earnings to his family).
The sticker price of about $60K per year (tuition, room and board, books, travel, misc. expenses) only applies to folks making about $250K per year, or who have substantial financial assets outside of retirement accounts.
Harvard should pay the appraised value? LOL
What if they don’t want the papers? What if they view a “Chicago appraisal” as worthless? What if they feel the man is dishonest?
If the papers are so valuable why don’t other universities bid on them?
Maybe, just maybe, there were only two documents that had value. The man sold them and now he’s trying extortion to squeeze money out of Harvard because they have deep pockets.
Just because Harvard has billions in it’s endowment you feel they should pay.
You sound like a Democrat. You have money in your 401k, you should pay for my healthcare.
When I look at the following link:
I read where Harvard offered him $7,500 for one document (the Diploma) that appraised at $65,000. I wouldn’t threaten to burn them, I’d send them to Christie’s for auction and never give Harvard another chance to buy them. Harvard apparently thought he should just give them the papers for almost nothing.
“The FR Way” would be to drill down a little bit before badmouthing your fellow FReepers. Please look at the story I linked in #47, it has a lot more detail.
“Taking a strong stand on right or wrong based on a short news article is a common occurrence around here.”
Yeah. It is amazing what basic priciples does to a person’s ability to see clearly. You should try it.
Where does McDonald live? I’d like to mail him some marshmellows. Go for it, man! Cut off your greedy nose to spite your face. Burn, baby, burn.
