The director of the National Security Agency and his deputy are expected to depart in the coming months, US officials said on Wednesday, in a development that could give President Obama a chance to reshape the eavesdropping agency.

Army general Keith Alexander's eight-year tenure was rocked this year by revelations contained in documents leaked by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden about the agency's widespread scooping up of telephone, email and social media data.

For a lame duck president, he sure is changing the military and intel leadership.

The NSA is either not loyal enough, not gay enough, or not muslim enough.

History shows that it's always a bad sign when a country's general staff is purged (e.g. retired, killed, dishonored, etc.).

Maybe just not smart enough? Running the NSA which has serious technical capability pretty much requires an engineering type running it, someone who can grasp the finer points of the equipment, systems, etc. You can hire liberal arts majors to manage personnel and all the small krap that any organization has to deal with——but not lead it. All the decades I’ve watched this organization grow they’ve never had a truly competent leader and you see how that’s working out?

who is next?

A general or flag officer, probably from the Marines.

My best guess.

The most obvious one I know is in the Oral Office closet. But I sure hope he stays in the closet.

That said, did you know that there are entire villages in Pakistan that consist of gay men. They marry only to produce children.

“Command” of NSA rotates between the Army, Navy and Air Force. Alexander is an Army four-star; his predecessor, General Mike Hayden, was an Air Force general; unless Barry decides to break the rotation, the next NSA Director will be a Navy Admiral.

Both Alexander and Hayden are the longest-serving NSA directors in history; between them, they held the job almost 14 years. DIRNSA was formerly a three-star billet; it was elevated to four-star rank after 9/11. The last NSA director who served a “normal” three-year tour (as a Lt Gen or Vice Admiral) was Lt Gen Ken Minihan, who retired in 1999.

NSA’s growth over the past two decades, both in size and power, has been jaw-dropping. And virtually no one shows any inclination to reign in the agency, and its reach. Go figure.
