Jim DeMint: We Won't Back Down on ObamaCare
wsj.com ^ | October 17, 2013 | Jim DeMint

Posted on 10/17/2013 11:19:12 PM PDT by Tailgunner Joe

We know that premiums are going up due to ObamaCare—Americans are getting notices in their mailboxes every day. On Wednesday, Drew Gonshorowski of the Center for Data Analysis at the Heritage Foundation published research that shows exchange premiums are going up in all but five states. In North Carolina, for example, many consumers will find their premiums almost double when shopping on the government exchanges. The hardest-hit states, such as Georgia, Arizona, Vermont and North Dakota, will see premium increases of up to 150%.

Mr. Gonshorowski's research shows that the hardest hit by the increases will be young adults. "A state that exhibits this clearly is Vermont," he writes, "where the increase for 27-year-olds is 144 percent and the increase for 50-year-olds is still 60 percent, but far less. All states exhibit this relationship."

We also know that, once established, the cost of ObamaCare's new entitlements will not fall. Historical evidence suggests the opposite. Nearly 50 years ago, at the time of Medicare's enactment, it was projected that the federal government would spend $9 billion on Part A hospital services in 1990. Actual spending in that year totaled $67 billion—an increase of 644% compared with initial estimates.

Likewise, government officials originally projected that Medicare Part B physician services would require "federal appropriations of about $500 million a year from general tax revenues." Last year, the federal outlay for that program was $163.8 billion—overshooting the original estimate by more than 4,400%.

Given this track record, the Congressional Budget Office's projection that ObamaCare will cost "only" $250 billion (you read that right: a quarter-trillion dollars) a decade from now seems far-fetched.

There's a reason Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid recently claimed that ObamaCare will lead to a single-payer health-care system: It happens to be true.

“Class warfare only goes so far when one finally wakes up and realizes they will never get anywhere with their “free” healthcare that is not set up that way at all.”

This will be free to many people “on the bottom” (and I don’t mean those on welfare - they already had free healthcare); high earners (over $30K, probably) will be subsidizing the healthcare of those people trying to raise families on minimum-wage jobs. Just as in Cuba where communism spelled doom for the middle and upper classes, this will actually bring benefits to people who currently have nothing; they’ll always support the party that gives them our money.

You’re right; they were beaten by Obama’s oratorical brilliance./s

They were beaten by tribal politics. Demography is destiny.

There is no other explanation how this half-wit token with such high unemployment, high prices for staples, record consumer debt, and low home prices is here for another four years. If you talk to average people you will be shocked by their perceptions, and you’ll very quickly understand who shaped them.

59% of non-Hispanic whites voted for Romney. They voted in the majority for Romney across all age groups and gender. In any other election, Romney would have won the WH. The problem is that non-Hispanic whites make up only 66% of the population compared to 89% in 1970.

By 2019 half of the children 18 and under will be minorities as classified by the USG. Each cohort that turns 18 is more Democrat than the previous one. The Democrats are increasing their voters while ours are decreasing.

87 percent of the 1.2 million legal immigrants entering annually are minorities as defined by the U.S. Government and almost all of the illegal aliens are minorities. By 2042, half of the residents of this country will be minorities. Generally, immigrants and minorities vote two to one for the Democrat Party. Hence, Democrats view immigration as a never-ending source of voters that will make them the permanent majority party. In essence, every year we are importing hundreds of thousands of Dem voters.

The Democrats, under the banner of multiculturalism and diversity, have forged a political coalition that depends on individuals coalescing around racial and ethnic identities rather than the issues. The continuing and increasing flow of minority immigrants, mostly poor and uneducated, provides a natural constituency for the Democrats, which see them as their principal source of political power.

The reason this "half-wit token with such high unemployment, high prices for staples, record consumer debt, and low home prices is here for another four years" is that issues no longer matter when you vote along tribal lines.

States like NV, CO, NM, VA, NC, and FL are turning purple and will soon be blue. I have seen how demographics have changed VA. Here in Fairfax County, 30% of the residents are foreign born. In 1990 they were 15% of the population. This has electoral consequences. McAwful will more than likely by elected as Governor over a solid conservative, Ken Cuccinelli.

Unless we stem the tide of legal immigration, get used to losing elections. Hillary is as big a lock as any first time Presidential candidate in our history. The Electoral College math is inescapable.

I have not read of anything about DeMint backing a Graham opponent for 2014.

Well, there you have it-— a “high earner” defined as 30K or higher-— this is the death of the middle and lower class... hence true marxism.

Let us see if the savvy 27 year olds who are just beginning to work their life and try to save and be responsible, are going to sign up for confiscatory premiums, confiscatory deductibles to get “limited” coverage. The sale is a poor one, and enforcement to do so utterly ludicrous— the makings of a revolution, like during Vietnam and LBJ. The millenials and the younger ones will not stand for this— only the dumbasses and uninformed. Which is why the continual assuaging by the msm to paper this nightmare over.
This battle is just beginning and it will be a war.

“By 2042, half of the residents of this country will be minorities.”

I personally believe this will happen by 2020; the later dates are thrown out there to prevent a panic or reaction by “Americans”.

“59% of non-Hispanic whites voted for Romney. They voted in the majority for Romney across all age groups and gender.”

That is a very low number considering what had happened to this country in the preceding four years.

“Generally, immigrants and minorities vote two to one for the Democrat Party.”

No doubt; the country is being given away by people who no longer care enough about it to produce another generation of Americans.

“Unless we stem the tide of legal immigration, get used to losing elections.”

I am used to it.

LOL. It has nothing to do with what you believe but with hard data based on the census. If the Gang of 8 bill passes, then it will happen much sooner due to almost tripling of legal immigration over the next decade.

No doubt; the country is being given away by people who no longer care enough about it to produce another generation of Americans.

If you want to see something that is amazing, take a look at this May 2013 press release from the Census Bureau: International Migration is Projected to Become Primary Driver of U.S. Population Growth for First Time in Nearly Two Centuries

"International migration is projected to surpass natural increase (births minus deaths) as the principal driver of U.S. population growth by the middle of this century, according to three new series of population projections released today by the U.S. Census Bureau. This scenario would mark the first time that natural increase was not the leading cause of population increase since at least 1850, when the census began collecting information about residents' country of birth. The shift in what drives U.S. population growth is projected to occur between 2027 and 2038, depending on the future level of international migration.

"This projected milestone reflects the mix of our nation's declining fertility rates, the aging of the baby boomer population and continued immigration."

Other highlights:

Total U.S. population in 2060 ranges from 392.7 million in the constant series to 442.4 million in the high series.

The 65 and older population would outnumber the population younger than 18 as of 2038 in the constant series, 2046 in the low series, and 2056 in the December 2012 projections. In the high series, the under-18 population would remain greater than the 65 and older population throughout the period.

The population younger than 18, 23.5 percent of the total in 2012, would drop to 20.8 percent in 2060 in the constant series. In the high series, it would decrease to 21.4 percent in 2060.

The series with the latest projected date for when the U.S. population would become majority-minority (2046) is the constant series.

The population under 18 years is projected to become majority-minority in either 2018 or 2019 in all four series.

The working-age population is projected to become majority-minority between 2036 (high series) and 2042 (constant series).

The percentage of the population 65 and older that is minority would increase in each series, but not become majority-minority by 2060 in any of them.

My beliefs have nothing to do with it; I have eyes, and the ethnic makeup of my children’s classes don’t lie.

Please don't take me for a fool. Anecdotal information is not as reliable or accurate as census data based on hundreds of millions of responses.

The ethnic makeup of your children's classes is a reflection of where you live and the demographics of the area. It doesn't reflect the entire country.

Anglo-Americans have deceived themselves for decades that someone else would have the kids they themselves were foregoing; keep going with that strategy. It gave us two terms of Obama; that doesn’t lie, either.

and the entire country doesn’t reflect the local situation. BOTH are valuable information, not one or the other.

It tells me that NJ is 58% “Anglo” while the US is 63%; you think that indicates we have 30 years before those “Anglo” percentages are below 50%? I assure you based on school enrollments alone that is not the case.

For years we’d been told that Hispanics would outnumber blacks by 2010; soon after the 2000 census we were told it already happened. Why shouldn’t we think the same game is being played with whites?

Immigration drives three quarters of our population growth. Blacks have the highest abortion rates. There would be twice as many blacks today without abortion.

Fertility rates decline as nations acquire more wealth. The fertility rates of China and Japan are much less than ours for different reasons. So is most of Europe.

It is one thing for "Anglo-Americans" to have less children, it is another to embrace a public policy on immigration that will transform a predominantly non-Hispanic white country to a majority minority nation. It started with the 1965 Immigration Act that abolished the national origins act. As a result, 87% of our 1.2 million legal immigrants who enter each year are minorities.

I doubt that there has ever been a country in world history that has peacefully transformed itself so that the principal race/ethnic group made itself a minority. Immigration is a controllable variable. We have actually increased immigration over the past 40 years. The last two decades have been the highest in US history. And if the Gang of 8 bill is adopted, we will almost triple the numbers that came in during the last decade, the highest in our history.

The demographic changes have many consequences, including electoral ones. The question is whether we can assimilate such numbers and still remain the same country that embraces the views and vision of our Founders or whether we will be Balkanized along racial, ethnic, cultural, and linguistic lines. 20% of Americans now live in households where a language other than English is spoken. And those numbers will only grow.

I gave you the census bureau data, but you continue to to proffer your own views based on anecdotal information. Did you read the press release I provided to you in my post #125?

The high series also projects that the minority population — all people except for those that are non-Hispanic, single-race white — would climb from 37 percent of the total in 2012 to 58.8 percent in 2060. In contrast, the U.S. minority population would reach 55.9 percent in the low series. The Asian population, 5.1 percent of the total in 2012, would reach 7.3 percent in 2060 in the low series and 9 percent in the high series. Similarly, the Hispanic population was 17 percent of the total in 2012 and is projected to reach 29.9 percent in 2060 in the low series and 31.3 percent in the high series.

The population under 18 years is projected to become majority-minority in either 2018 or 2019 in all four series.

The working-age population (18-64) is projected to become majority-minority between 2036 (high series) and 2042 (constant series).

Told by whom? Certainly not the Census Bureau.

I’m paying $5 dollars for my Obamacare. No more no less. I was told this was “Affordable care” and $5 is all I can afford. I am sending a letter to Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid every month demanding they cover the rest of the cost so it remains affordable to me.
