Saudi Arabia, angered over Mideast, declines Security Council seat
Reuters ^ | Fri Oct 18, 2013 6:58am EDT | Angus McDowall

Saudi Arabia, in an unprecedented show of anger at the failure of the international community to end the war in Syria and act on other Middle East issues, said on Friday it would not take up its seat on the United Nations Security Council.

The kingdom condemned what it called international double standards on the Middle East and demanded reforms in the Security Council.

Riyadh's frustration is mostly directed at Washington, its oldest international ally, which has pursued policies since the Arab Spring that Saudi rulers have bitterly opposed and which have severely damaged relations with the United States, Saudi analysts have said.

Saudi Arabia has also been angered by a rapprochement between Iran, its old regional foe, and the United States, which has taken root since President Barack Obama spoke by telephone last month to the new Iranian President, Hassan Rouhani, in the highest-level contact between the two countries in more than three decades.

Citing the Security Council's failure to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian dispute, take steps to end Syria's civil war and to stop nuclear proliferation in the region, Riyadh said the body had instead perpetuated conflicts and grievances.

"Saudi Arabia ... is refraining from taking membership of the U.N. Security Council until it has reformed so it can effectively and practically perform its duties and discharge its responsibilities in maintaining international security and peace," said a Foreign Ministry statement issued on state media.

The conservative Islamic kingdom has traditionally avoided big political statements, preferring to wield its influence as world's top oil exporter, birthplace of Islam and chief Arab ally of the United States behind closed doors.

The Muslim Brotherhood cuts into the Saudi’s business, which is spreading Wahhabism.

Bingo! You've got it exactly. But it makes a perfect excuse.

There are more than enough petrodollars floating around the gulf to hire a mercenary army to push any change in Syria which Saudi Arabia really wants.

We're not even sure at this point if they want Assad in or out.

On one hand, he is close to Hezbollah and Iran, traditional enemies of Wahhabi's. On the other, Assad is fighting the same Al Qaida factions which also have the Saudi royal family in their cross-hairs.

I have lost count on who and how many BHO2 has double-crossed, but I know it is many.

Excellent point. Sooner or later, one of them is bound to bite back and, when they do, BO will suddenly find out that he is not quite so indispensable as he thinks he is now.

W don’t need nor want Middle East oil. It is time to pull our military out of there.

Then, the Islamofascists can slaughter each other.

United States Becomes World’s Number-One Oil Supplier

The Saudis want to the US to solve their Iranian problem. The American nuclear talks with Iran is the last thing they want to see.

We’ve been doing the Saudis bidding for the last 25 years, going back to the aiding the Mujhadeen in Afghanistan and the First Gulf War.

Zero serves the one who he worships, himself. If it looks like a serves Islamists or communists it’s because he thinks they serve HIM at the time. F&%$king idiots and suckers.

Wait ‘till he turns on the ‘rat party. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

When the Russkies tried boycotting the UNSC, the result was the UN defense of the Republic of Korea; this is one anecdote from which one can infer that this Saudi approach will backfire. BTW, the various Islamic thugocracies including Saudi Arabia blocked Israeli membership in the local UN regional group, preventing Israel from participating in the Security Council for decades.

The Saudis wanted to leave well enough alone in Libya. Obama stirred up trouble against the Saudis' wishes. Now Libya exports arms, terrorism and Islamic terrorists, to the Saudis' chagrin.

The Saudis wanted to leave well enough alone in Egypt. Obama stirred up trouble against the Saudis' wishes. Egypt is too important to the Saudis to let it go sideways, so, ten billion Saudi dollars later, the Saudis have restored Egypt to stability.

The Saudis then noted that Qatar was attempting regime change in Iran's strategic client state, Syria. OK, thought the Saudis, if you like helping Sunnis overthrow regimes, then help us trim Iran's wings by getting rid of Assad. Obama said OK, so the Saudis pulled out all the stops, including threatening Putin to his face in his own dacha.

Well Obama doesn't follow through after failing to build a coalition and caving to Putin's sabre-rattling. Then Obama has the gall to start dancing with Iran as they continue to build a Bomb that could depose the Saudi royal family.

I see this as a lover's spat between Obama and the Saudis. Any fallout from this will be paid for by the U.S. taxpayer, of course.

This is very curious. The Saudi royals are the “guardians of Mecca” and Saudi Arabia is very important to Muslims. Yet Obama has been doing some very bizarre things where it almost seems like he’s trying to set himself up as the Muslim Big Cheese in the midst of these three main Islamic sects (Sunni, Shiite, and Allawite).

Either he’s too stupid to know he’s pissing them off, or he somehow thinks that he’ll end up in charge. With Obama, it’s all about his personal power, which he obtains not by fighting for it openly, but but making his opponents destroy each other or themselves.

The Devil, Father of Lies...

Once you recall that it makes more sense.

Never seen the Soddies “so concerned” about world affairs. I’ve said for decades that they are in line to get their throats cut too. The Soddy Royals are just too overwhelmingly corrupt to stay in place for long. So If they think the US support is getting drifty, and it is, then they can see their own worm turning sooner than later. Remember a few years ago when they got their backs up and wanted our armored reserve out of their ‘hood? so screwem.
