What a real NASA astronaut thinks of the film Gravity
Herald Sun ^ | 10/19/13 | GARRETT REISMAN, FORMER NASA ASTRONAUT FORBES

Posted on 10/18/2013 7:52:29 PM PDT by SoFloFreeper

GRAVITY is the most realistic space movie ever. I mean, that Clooney guy looks just like me!

Actually I've been besieged with questions about what I thought about this movie ever since it came out. Just here at work at SpaceX last week,I was asked that question about a dozen times a day. I quipped that "What do you think of Gravity?" was becoming every astronaut's least favourite question, surpassing even "How do you poop in space?"

So, to help me deal with this onslaught, here is my more serious attempt at a movie review:

First of all, it's a great movie. The pace and story was definitely engaging and I think it was the best use of the 3-D IMAX medium to date. Rather than using the medium as a gimmick, Gravity uses it to depict a real environment that is completely alien to most people.

It is the only movie this year that I think you should see on the biggest screen possible.

I tried watching it the other day. After 10-15 minutes I got bored and shut it down.

The movie is a masterpiece, stunning and profoundly religious. The pro-life imagery could not be clearer.

George Looney and Sandra Bullock are huge cogs in the 0bama money machine. I wouldn’t piss on either of them if they were on fire, let alone devote my time and money to their movies.

I didn’t like it at all...the plot was space accident with lots of noisy cinematic effects until she, the lone survivor, gets back to earth. And a cameo appearance by Geo. Clooney. I suppose it shows the triumph of the human spirit or something, but I’d prefer a more meaty plot, with interaction throughout with another instead of talking to herself. I never liked that Tom Hanks movie where he’s marooned by himself on an island either...so admit perhaps its me, as everyone else raves about it.

So what was the magic force that kept pulling on Clooney when Bullock is holding his line while her foot is tangled in lines?

I just saw it tonight and this stuck out as a problem, even though there were many technical errors and broader implausibilities. Especially since they had just done a very long and plausibly choreographed scene involving the dynamics of tethering. It occurred to me afterwards that centrifugal force could be offered as an explanation, but the scene gives no hint of rotation, and there is a long shot of the scene which highlights the inexplicable force that you mention.

To me, this bespeaks the complete indifference of the director to physical constraints. There were scenes that showed respect for the physical realities, but that was just a directorial decision to listen to some physics wonks to establish credibility. In this case he had PLOT in mind.

There was a Korean movie about a guy getting marooned on an island, in the middle of Seoul in the Han River. The only person who noticed was a recluse girl who never left her room using her telescope.
