New mom faces ARREST because she took son she's breastfeeding to jury duty when there was no-one else to care for him.

A Missouri woman is to face court this week for bringing her new born child to the courthouse for jury duty because she was breastfeeding. Laura Trickle, of Lee’s Summit, delivered her daughter Axel in March and was breastfeeding when she was called for jury duty in August. She asked to be exempt from appearing, as she was breastfeeding, but received notice that she must report to court to fullfill her civic obligation and serve jury duty, according to the Kansas City Star.

Trickle was told to either arrange for child care or bring somebody with her who could care for the child during jury selection. On September 3, she appeared for jury duty with her child, but according to the ensuing court order, she ‘willfully and contemptuously appeared for jury service with her child and no one to care for the child’. Trickle will now face Jackson County Presiding Judge Marco Roldan on Thursday at a hearing at the Jackson County Courthouse downtown. Those who skip jury duty can be found in contempt of court and ordered to pay a fine of up to $500 and maybe even be arrested. The mother insists she is not a criminal, saying ‘I’ve never even had a speeding ticket’.

5. What if I care for a dependent child or adult?

A: If you have a dependent child or adult under your care, you may ask for a
postponement or excuse from jury service. Please keep in mind that many
citizens care for dependent children or adults, and only those situations
that would impose an “extreme hardship” in the judgment of the court may
be excused. (Section 494.430.)

A juror has even fewer rights than the accused has. The accused has a lawyer to determine what questions may be asked of him - the juror must answer ANY question put forth. Even questions that could never, ever be asked of the accused.

I suspect from your screen name that you never breast-fed a baby. Just guessing, but am I right? So let me tell you how this works.

Yes there are breast pumps. Even the best ones do not work anywhere near as well as a baby’s jaws in emptying out the breast. When the breast is not emptied, it reduces milk production. Less milk is not a good thing for the baby.

Furthermore, the pump has to be used regularly, every few hours, to keep production up.

Furthermore, babies who get in the habit of drinking from a bottle don’t transition back to the breast readily, because the bottle is so much easier. So having a sitter feed him from a bottle every few hours is going to create problems.

I’m not being critical of you because these are things most men don’t know, and even women who haven’t nursed a baby don’t know. But nursing is something healthy and natural that this woman is trying to do for her child, and as a conservative you should not favor the government interfering in the relationship between parent and child.

I agree…. Where are the feminazis? I think she should have asked the judge if the problem could simply be solved by quietly breastfeeding the child while she sat listening to testimony with the other jurors….and all the diaper changes could be made during the many breaks in the proceedings.

Some judges are a$$es, some people have a bad attitude in general. I am not taking sides on this one, I have no idea who the real horse’s patoot was here, could even be both.

Just think. Women fought and died so that this woman could have the privilege of sitting on a jury. And she screws it all up by failing to abort her baby. Talk about selfish!

New mom faces ARREST because she took son she's breastfeeding to jury duty ...
... Laura Trickle, of Lee’s Summit, delivered her daughter Axel in March ...

Anybody else find this a bit weird? So what sex is the child, hemaphrodite or transgender?

Still this looks like really stupid justice at first glance. Remember, the old saw about how do you address the dumbest lawyer in a court room ... answer is "Your Honor!" Likely a case of misunderstanding from the git-go when the mother could not get a legitimate excusal or delay. Still for this wording of ‘willfully and contemptuously appeared for jury service with her child and no one to care for the child’ is just about beyond the pale. Hope and pray that previously unavailable intelligence prevails!

What if you are a breastfeeding mother who doesn't pump?

What if you have no relatives who live close enough to babysit?

The truth is that when you are a mother with an baby you should not be concentrating the burglary or rape case but on your child.

A portion of our citizenry are the ones who are tasked with raising our young citizens and they need to be free to do their jobs.

There are enough other people to serve jury duty that this judge does not need to be such a pr!ck.

I would like to give these judges a lesson in civics obligations since I’m sure a large number have never performed any.

Lesson number one is to vote,Number two:Serve your country in the military and number three go to work every day and care for your family.

Serving on a jury is NOT a civic duty.Especially when our government is giving away our citizenship right left and right.

I hate these self rightious judges.

It’s the modern age. They invented Breast pumps a long time ago.

NONSENSE. The child is more important than a stupid jury.

Are you going to pay for that?

Would you trust your newborn with ‘just anyone’?

Would the jury be allowed breaks so she could pump? Some moms need to pump ever 2hrs or their supply dwindles.

Bad decision all around.

5m olds can’t care for themselves.

Ideal breastfeeding is done for at LEAST 6m. Most pediatricians recommend one year.

My pedi discouraged ANY other food than breastmilk prior to 6m.

Right on all counts.

I was hospitalized for a post surgical complications a week after my 3rd baby. Even though the hospital provided the top of the line breast pump my supply never recovered. And once she got ahold of the bottle nipple she refused the breast.

By 2w post partum I was having to supplement with formula.
