Here are the world’s worst cities for air pollution (Al Gore Suicide Watch)

Here are the world’s worst cities for air pollution, and they’re not the ones you’d expect.

In 2010, some 223,000 people around the world died from lung cancer caused by exposure to air pollution, the World Health Organization (WHO) said yesterday. And more than half of those deaths are believed to have been in China and elsewhere in East Asia. Here are the world’s worst cities for air pollution, according to the WHO. +

air-pollution-by-city

Exposure to air pollution is getting worse in parts of the world, especially industrializing countries, according to the WHO. The WHO’s key announcement yesterday was that it has included outdoor air pollution on its definitive list of the world’s known carcinogens—an addition that, it hopes, will get governments to do something about it. Air pollution is the world’s worst environmental carcinogen and more dangerous than second-hand smoke, for instance, the health body said. +

As the chart above shows, the cities with the worst air are often not big capitals, but provincial places with heavy industry in them or nearby. Ahwaz, for instance, in southwestern Iran, far outstrips infamously polluted cities like New Delhi or Beijing, with 372 parts per million of particles smaller than 10 micrometers (PM10), compared to the world average of 71. Life expectancy for the city of 1.2 million residents is the lowest in Iran. +

Why so bad? In Ahwaz, Iranian meteorology officials have blamed the US for the spike, claiming the presence of US forces in Iraq during the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s destroyed agriculture and caused desertification. But researchers cite heavy industry in and around the city, like oil, metal and petrochemical processing, and blame the desertification on the draining of marshes and a national project that has diverted local water away from the city.

Notice how low L.A. is. They’ve really turned it around. A combination of exhaust gas recirculation and catalytic converters.

Looks to me like Big Al should go over and bother his buddies in Iran with his nonsense.

YES and the U.S. is ALWAYS the focus of the U.N. and the global warming elite limo liberals as the reason to blame. Like every other freaking problem in this world....the finger is pointed towards Islamic nations.

When I was a kid we used to have “smog alerts.” I don’t think we have had them in the last 25 years.

“Dust” is being redefined as “pollution.”

Well we got rid of air pollution, but the Left realized it wasn’t enough for them to gain power, so then they had to invent other crises’ such as “Acid Rain” in the 70s, then of course, when that failed, we got “Global Warming”, then “Climate Change.”

My son has to do business in Beijing from time to time, and he says the pollution is absolutely horrible. I’m really surprised that it’s worse in all those Muslim countries. I wouldn’t have thought they were that industrialized.

I looked up Ahwaz, Iran on Google Maps. It a city in a desert, not unlike Las Vegas, except the desert goes on much farther. Of course it is going to have an uncontrollable dust problem. The only things they could possibly do bring down the levels of dust are to encase the city in a large sci-fi dome like Logan’s Run, or move the city.

I grew up in LA. 64 years.

It was hell when I was a child. But today, I see very lovely clear skies.

Probably volatiles from all the oil operations in the desert.

Ahwaz has 3.2 million people and moving it might be tough

I seem to remember that Phil Silvers got Uncle Jed Clampett to finance the boring of a huge hole through the mountains east of LA, and the mounting a huge exhaust fan inside. LA was going to get the clean air, the people on the other side of the mountains were going to get the smog, and Uncle Jed was gonna get the shaft.

So our worst city is equal to Paris.

When I was a kid we traveled through Pittsburg in the mid 50’s, couldn’t see very far. Then in 61 we went to New York to put my older sister on a steamship for a European trip and it was pretty much just a constant haze.

The only reason Hilo, HI is even ON that list is because of the ACTIVE Volcano just down the road. Sometimes you can smell it, but it’s Mother Nature, NOT human-Caused.

Ulaanbaatar has these big giant, Soviet era, mattress burning power plants that dump horrific amounts of smog.

It will snow in the punch bowl, and within hours, all of the snow capped mountains are browned. It is pretty nasty.

No kidding, you have to wash your clothes twice and rinse extra when you get back to the states to get the smell out.

The countryside is gorgeous, but the capitol is everything you'd expect in a glorious utopian paradise.
