For example, suppose you ask people on the street this question: "Do you think battleship captains deserve extra pay?" You'll get plenty of "yeses", even though there are no more battleship captains.
Street surveys like this one prove nothing. They exist only to belittle those being asked the question.

dear lord, of course they’ve won. can anyone name even one reason why politicians, the super wealthy, the media, even Hollywood, would want an educated citizenry?
I once had two co-workers, one of whom had a BA degree in Computer Science from a State University who when I mentioned “Orwellian” in a conversation, asked me what “Orwellian” was. The other, a lady working in a software development group, by no means stupid, didn’t know that we fought the Japanese in World War Two. At the time I knew them, they were both enthusiastic Bill Clinton supporters.
Here's another point. These street surveys are selectively edited. The sensible answers are left on the cutting room floor. Only the stupid answers get the spotlight.
As to me being one of the people in the survey, the answer is, sadly, no. But I wish I was on that beach. I have not had a decent vacation in a long time.
