Reporters, you may have noticed, make lots of mistakes. But an error made by an Associated Press reporter in a 112-word story this month has proved particularly damaging especially to the reporter and his editors and has raised questions about the appropriate response when a news organization gets its facts wrong.
Veteran AP reporter Bob Lewis was fired this week after mistakenly reporting that Virginia gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe (D) had lied to a federal investigator probing a Rhode Island estate planner involved in a fraudulent death-benefits scheme.

Dumbass AP reporter didn't do his job ...
Woodward & Bernstein had to "double-source" their info when reporting on Watergate and they still got burned [at least once] when they were set up by Nixon's cronies.
Or it’s the Dems doing a super job at damage control and are now to the extract revenge phase.
How many times has a reporter been fired for mis-reporting about a Republican?
Woodward & Bernstein came damn close when they screwed the pooch during Watergate - Ben Bradlee had to save their jobs personally with Katherine Graham ...
If he had reported false information about the Conservative candidate, he would have got a pay raise!
Good story, but ALL the sources were Hard Left employees of the Hard Left Washington Post.
And, yes, I know that Woodward claims he voted for Richard Nixon in 1972.
Only one source for that story, the same guy who claims he interviewed CIA Director William Casey at his hospital deathbed.
Never believed it for one second. The WaPo wanted Nixon for one reason and one reason only: he'd been instrumental in shielding and then tipping off Whittaker Chambers that the commies in Truman's justice department were about to arrest him before he could salvage any of the physical evidence that would corroborate his accusations against left-wing darling Alger Hiss.

Since when is a reporter’s mistake a crime?

Your “concern” of journalistic standards is mystifying.
Hmmm, I can’t think of any reporter that actually does the job anymore. At least none that are working with the mainstream media rags.
I assume the crime was to report something that was incorrect and negative about a liberal. I’m surprised they didn’t draw and quarter him.
Let’s imagine a reporter said something false about someone. Let’s imagine that persons name is Palin. Now, let’s imagine the punishment that reporter might receive for that mistake.
Evidently, this is not the same T.M. in the court filings, but was this T.M. identified? Seems like a big mistake for this seasoned reporter to make. I wonder how many investors there were with this Rhode Island estate planner. I also wonder if it is common to use just initials in a federal indictment.
The reporters mistake was in lying ABOUT a Democratave been.
They have been lying FOR Obama these past 5 years and that has been OK..
How many mis-reporters are now working at CNN?
