House Dem: Cruz's ObamaCare joke was aimed at 'birthers'

Rep. Matt Cartwright (D-Pa.) on Tuesday said a joke Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) made about the ObamaCare website was “calculated to appeal” to "backward people" who believe President Obama was born outside the United States.

At a rally in Houston on Monday, Cruz took a jab at the problems that have plagued the federal online healthcare enrollment site.

"You may have noticed that all the Nigerian email scammers have become a lot less active lately," Cruz said. "They all have been hired to run the ObamaCare website."

Speaking on MSNBC’s "The Ed Show," Cartwright said Cruz was sending a subtle message to the crowd.

“Jokes about Nigerian scammers, you know, I wonder how much off the cuff that really was, and how calculated it was to appeal to Sen. Cruz’s base, many of whom believe that the president is from Africa,” he said.

Cartwright was pressed by the host on whether he believed Republicans were seeking to inflame racial tensions.

“I don’t know that they’re doing that … but I will say that I suspect it,” he said. “And whether they’re doing it on purpose, it does appeal to the people who think that way.

"There are, you know, a lot of fairly backward people that are a part of the base of people like Sen. Cruz. And comments like that just are right up their alley.”

B-but he was born in Africa. He promoted himself as being born in Africa while running for Senate, told his publisher he was born in Africa and his own Grandma said he was born in Africa so who are we to deny him his birthplace?

Obama is a very confused man. He doesn’t know where he was born. He doesn’t know what religion that he is. And on and on and on.

"Jokes about Nigerian scammers, you know, I wonder how much off the cuff that really was, and how calculated it was to appeal to Sen. Cruz’s base, many of whom believe that the president 's father is from Africa,” he said. Fixed it for the Dumas.

Is Matt the idiot, illegitimate son of Ben Cartwright? This guy might be the son that Hoss, Little Joe, and Adam sent packing, with only his clothes and a few day grub, to Pennsylvania. He shows up as a congressman? Who'd of thunk?

You don’t find it a bit unusual not to reveal it?

What a DF you must be Matt

Speaking of backwards...

To combat global warming, Cartwright supports implementing cap-and-trade emission standards for companies to encourage lowering emissions. Although he believes American energy production and American economic growth are linked, he does not believe environment-friendly methods should be ruled out. He supports investments in sustainable “green” energy productions with fewer emissions. He also supports further forest conservation and is committed to keep water sources clean through repealing legislation allowing companies to pollute water supplies.

Gun Control

Cartwright is in favor of more gun control. During his first month in office he co-sponsored four bills involving gun control. He opposes gun-makers’ legal immunity after a crime has occurred, as does he oppose assault rifle sales.

Taxes

Cartwright supports a raise on income tax. He also believes the current tax system in place gives too many breaks to upper income earners. He describes the middle class as being “under assault” and seeks to alter the tax system to allow the middle-class to carry less of a burden.
