The Food and Drug Administration is recommending new restrictions on prescription medicines containing hydrocodone, the highly addictive painkiller that has grown into the most widely prescribed drug in the U.S.
In a major policy shift, the agency said in an online notice Thursday that hydrocodone-containing drugs should be subject to the same restrictions as other narcotic drugs like oxycodone and morphine.

When I left the Nursing facility they tried to give me a whole bunch of them, I said no. My doctor told me that I could have gotten $30 a pill on the street, not that I would.
They've already decided how many gallons we need each time so I'm sure that's only a matter of time.
Is this because the FDA just approved a pure-hydrocodone drug (not combined with another painkiller)?
I’ve had mixed results. Took it once after minor surgery and didn’t help at all. Nada. Couldn’t tell I’d even taken anything. OTOH, I’ve also taken it for very severe headache and shin splints when tylenol was ineffective and it worked quite well. Oxycodone/percocet seems more effective, though.
The most remarkable thing is that, in 1917, the Congress knew very well that to prohibit and criminalize C2H5OH, they had to amend the Constitution.
In 1968, when they wanted to prohibit and criminalize C21H30OH, they just wrote a law.
What changed?
Typical goobermint reaction to a [semi] legitimate problem. Ignore the people involved in the actual problem and punish the rest of us.
Mu opioid receptors in both the brain and colon. One gives you pain relief, the other virtually stops colon activity. This can be treated with Relistor (a narcotic antagonist that does not cross the blood-brain barrier--but it is expensive and the dose should really be higher)
As many problems as I see dispensing hydrocodone products, changing the prescribing process will not help. Prescription monitoring programs that report all controlled substances to a central data base allow prescribers and pharmacies to identify problems like doctor shopping.
If u have never had a migraine, you can’t understand the pain. However, I try to avoid narcotics for the pain cuz they can become a problem, at least for me, so therefore I don’t take them. The most I will take is Tramadol, which works great and doesn’t make me feel “funny”. Also, triptitans r a God send, a miracle drug for migraines.
But for those who need a narcotic for migraine pain, it is getting almost impossible to get, which I think is cruel!!! How dare the gov. let someone suffer like that for no good reason! Here in Oklahoma, beginning November 1st, no refiils on hydrocodone, must b a new prescription everytime. Signs plastered all over pharmacies....ridiculous!!

I found it interesting that Loperamide HCL hits just the opioid receptor that stops colon activity — that’s how it stops diarrhea.
Typical right wing overreaction - there is nothing in the Constitution. Well, there is nothing in the Holy Constitution about having to drive on the right side of the road either! Drugs are and have been controlled by the Feds, get used to it. You wanted someone to protect you, didn’t ya?
Here’s something from the WSJ article a couple of days ago:
“According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 16,500 people died after overdosing on opioid-based painkillers in 2010, the last year for which data are available.”
I prefer plain old Empirin#3, with codeine. It upsets some people’s stomachs, but not mine. I took one teaspoon of cough syrup with hydrocodone, and it made my heart race, and I itched all over. Thankgoodness I only took half the prescribed dose of two teaspoons!
But forget about all the chronic pain it alleviates, this is about control!
Most of that stuff is mixed with acetaminophen.
Don’t double the dose and for God’s sake don’t use alcohol with it. Acetaminophen is dangerous stuff.
I was on it after neck surgery and found its worst side effect was constipation. 3 trips to the ER to get unplugged were not fun times.

Same for codeine, but I just eat a bunch of prunes or dried apricots. Works for me.

Now everything is outpatient based, slap a discharge on your forehead, a script for lortoabs, hydrocodone, vicodin, and a phone number to call if your limb falls off or your stitchches explode.
When I get pain, and granted it’s very seldom, Vicodin and it’s generic alternatives are the only things that works for me.
Aspirin, Tylenol, Tylenol #3, and Motrin are a waste of time.
I hardly every use it, but if I have a tooth flare up, it’s Vicodin or incredible pain.
