Parents send American teenage girl to live in Novosibirsk as punishment

An immigrant living in America sent her daughter home to Novosbirsk in 2011 because she allegedly misbehaved. She tried to commit suicide in Siberia, according to reports from American television company WUSA 9 and publication USA Today that Sib.fm’s correspondent examined.

17-year-old Sofia Roberts was born in Russia, but left to live in America when she was two years old with mother Natalia.

According to the broadcaster, in 2011 the mother sent her daughter, then 15, from the town of Chantilly, Virginia to Novosibirsk to meet her biological father. But after Sofia arrived in Russia, her mother changed her plans and told her that she was going to stay in Siberia for longer than planned, and later decided to leave her there to live permanently, as she misbehaved at home.

In a letter, the mother and American adoptive father, a immigration lawyer, described her as «uncontrollable» and said that she missed school, brought boys to the house, left home, took drugs and stole more than $1,000 from them.

The girl’s friends who live in Virginia told reporters that she never smoked, did not take drugs and drank no more than other teens.

According to the girl, she didn’t speak Russian at all when she arrived and her father didn’t understand English. She also complained that her father was an alcoholic, didn’t feed her and occasionally beat her. She fell into depression and even tried to commit suicide.

Sofia now lives at a hotel, where she works 60 hours a week. She uses her wages to fund her studies. Sib.fm’s correspondent found out that the hotel in question is the Fine O’Clock hostel in Novosibirsk.

The girl’s friends are trying to help her return to America before she turns 18: the Russian embassy has warned her that the chances of obtaining a U.S. visa will decrease when she becomes an adult. The girl’s mother and adoptive father told the channel’s reporters that they will only take her back if she shows them that she has really reformed.

Nothing like being exiled to Siberia.

There are times when many parents sort-of wish they could exile one of their teens to Siberia for a while...

Fly her to Mexico, teach her just a touch of Soanish, and let her walk over.

The Obamadorknwill make her a voter immediately..with the benefits of free medical care, no need to purchase insurance of any kind, and no tuition.

(Sorry, cannot put the /s there because we all know there is no sarc in the above.)

I used to think “Go to your room” was a tough exile.

Sounds a bit overstated - a kid being sent to live with family (bio father) wouldn’t make anyones news except for the ability to claim “she was sent to Siberia”.

Big whoop.

I completely agree with the parents on this one, but would like a few more facts of the case. Having dealt with teenagers for years, I could think of almost nothing better than this to get their attention.

Do NOT advocate her living with an alcoholic or him beating her. DO advocate her working 60 hours a week and hopefully wondering how she can change her behavior in order to live in a decent place once again. If she hasn't changed her attitude, let her stay there.

This girl has been abandoned.

Whether or not she deserved it is unknown, but it is obvious her mother does not want her back.

Se should consider herself an orphan and do the best she can with her life. It is all up to her now.

The girl was 15 when her friends admitted she was a drinker which probably means she started at 14 or younger. Big difference from a 18 year old senior boy at an end of the year party.

There are all kinds of parents, some accept teen drinking (and go to teen parties taking pics of teen girls grinding like MARYLAND DEMOCRAT DOUG GANSLER).

Other parents DON'T just dismiss it as "they all do it" and actually try to raise their kids right. eenshave been having sex but it doesn't make it right and accepting it as normal and not trying to stop it makes one a bad parent. Be a parent not this guy:

I must be one of the very fortunate few. My two sons (15, 17) are incredibly well behaved, respectful to others, don't get in trouble, and recognize the kids who are "trouble" and stay away from them.

Looking back, I think much of that has to do with Mom being at home full time and being there to keep them on the right path. When we made the decision for her to stay home and be with the kids full-time (oldest was 3, youngest was 1 at the time) it was financially tough and put a lot of pressure on me, however looking at the results seeing two fine young men it was all worth it.

This has gotta p**s off the bleeding hearts of every stripe. You can't spank or use any other forms of corporal punishment to discipline your disobedient and unruly child but they can. They can come into your home, take your child and bounce that child from one foster care home to another. Homes where the children end up being starved, sold as prostitutes, beaten and abused by strangers and neglected in every other way possible.
Ironically, leave the child with it's natural parents and if the ignore that their child is "drinking no more than any other teenager" the parents are hauled into jail for child neglect, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and child abuse to name a few.
My hat is off to the mother in this article for making the hard decision to send her daughter to Russia. Maybe, if the girl every comes back, she'll be a little more appreciative of the knowledge and life lessons her mother was trying to impart on her. Nothing beats first hand experience especially when one is a know it all teenager unwilling to listen and behave.

Nah... The liberals are simply ticked off that these parents and this girl are not in their social worker's system. LOL...

When little Miss Lurkin was that age - the idea of sending to Siberia would have been mighty tempting.
