Skip to comments. But What if Obamacare Works? (Let's assume the Website is fixed)
Posted on 10/27/2013 7:27:34 AM PDT by SeekAndFind
IN last weeks column, I wrote about what might happen if the new health care laws Web site remained a festering technological sore for months to come. (The answer: Nothing good.) But its still more likely that HealthCare.gov will be fixed by Thanksgiving and millions of Americans will (finally) be able to get a real look at what Obamacare is selling them.
What will they find? One way to understand what is being offered is to think in terms of three mores. Insurance à la Obamacare will be more expensive, more subsidized and more comprehensive than what was previously available on the individual market.
This may not be obvious if youre struggling to log on to HealthCare.gov. But some of the state-level exchange Web sites are working well enough to enable illuminating window shopping.
Take the exchange in my native state, Connecticut. There the more expensive part of the new regime is readily apparent. If you look at Connecticut insurance prices for 2013 that is, pre-Obamacare on the online clearinghouse eHealthInsurance, monthly premiums for a 30-year-old in good health can start below $100, and under $300 for a healthy 60-year-old.
(Excerpt) Read more at nytimes.com ...
The author observes that in his state, the lowest priced (bronze) plan for a 30-year-old Connecticut resident has premiums starting at $224 a month; for a 60-year-old, the cheapest plan starts at $537.
Well that’s the point of Obamacare — the young, the healthy and well off will subsidize the poor and the sick.
And what if monkeys fly out of my butt?
First there are many agencies that have their finger in the pie first.
Half of the people will have to pay the way of the other half.
Medical prices will shoot up so that the death squads will keep many out of the “system”
If the Website is fixed and accurate the Dems lose the Senate and RINO Pubbies get primaried...
When the law is fully implemented, the country will be poorer. No real wealth has been created during the anti capitalist, rule and regulation Obama administration. Borrowed and printed money pad statistics but produce nothing. Obama’s legacy will be a country corroded by debt.
Well, one is worth the price of admission, the other, not so much. :)
It’s a government program...it won’t work.
Well.. What constitutes “works.” If it’s within the context of skyrocketing premiums, co-pays, and deductibles, along with rationed, degraded care, then yes.. it’s “working” alright.
RE: Its a government program...it wont work.
Or we can say, it works as intended... whether you’ll like what works or not is another question.
And pay for all the layers of bureaucracy it's going to take to redistribute the money.
RE: frankly I think America is already t too FED UP to put up with this OUTRAGE
Not sure which “America” you’re talking about.
Nearly half of America is dependent on government assistance of some kind. Obamacare will only INCREASE dependency.
THESE PEOPLE VOTE TOO.
From the same paper that advocates spending our way out of recession, with wealth that doesn't exist.
It's a paper for idiots.
How can the healthy and young pay for the sick and poor when they don’t have a job?
What if the Obamadork actually was a man?
What if someone tripled his IQ and he became average?
What if liberals actually understood economics?
What if the Hillabeast actually did anything of value?
hmmmm - prolly true.
Of course, I think the author is talking about the law, not the website. For the law to work, several things must happen:
A: the laws of economics must be suspended.
B: human nature must change over night.
C: all of world history will be reversed.
The program was financially unworkable as originally defined.
Then Obama made certain it would fail by handing out waivers to politicians, pal and fellow scammers.
It is more than just the initial cost of the plans. There is no rating experience with these particular plans and if fewer young healthy people buy in than the costs will have to go up a lot to keep the insurance company solvent. The article also doesn’t mention that participating doctors and hospitals are being dumped from many plans so even if you can afford the plan you may not be able to see your current physician or go to the hospital of your choice. Lastly the administrative bumbling of the web site roll out is just a taste of how these plans will be administered by the feds. Imagine being rushed by ambulance to a hospital after a car accident only to be confronted with a bunch of paper pushers who can’t seem to find your name in the system or that you “belong” in this hospital. Don’t get me started about the treatment “guidelines” that will dictate how or if you will get treated.
It will work as designed and it will ruin the country.
The author's comparison in my judgment is bad enough when done in Connecticut but it will be much worse in red states. It is bad in Connecticut because it forces insurance on those who do not want it and that is tyranny. Good social policy-assuming arguendo that Obamacare by extending coverage is good social policy-does not justify tyranny.
So this jerk is for luring the suckers in with temporary subsidies then nailing them with impossible premiums, nice!
Not mentioned in this article: Obamacare creates doctor shortages and thus longer wait times. Further, it will reduce the quality of the professional providing the services. No matter what, Americans pay a lot more for a lot less.
You’ll either be dead or naturally healed because you won’t be able to get a doctors appointment for weeks in advance. Add just a few million to healthcare and that’s what happens. It’s a unintended consequence of the law.
all the comments o the original site are pro -obamacare. I hope those limp wristed libs have to pay through the nose.
the takers dont ordinarily take to the streets in numbers to let their voice be hear.
we have and must again
RE: I hope those limp wristed libs have to pay through the nose.
Those in favor of Obamacare are most likely those who WILL get a HUGE subsidy, or who will qualify for FREE healthcare via medicaid.
AS I said in a previous post, that’s close to HALF of those living in the USA ( Remember the magic number — 47% ?)
And THEY VOTE TOO.
“THESE PEOPLE VOTE TOO.”
As I’m waking up and reading your comments, I drift off for a moment and imagine we’ll simply stipulate that anyone receiving government assistance cannot vote in an entire election cycle (city/state/national). Problem fixed!
Okay, I’m back now. We’re doooooooooomed!
On Fox the other night, it was reported 108,000,000 on some sord of federal handout vs only 101,000,000 full time employed.
We have lost ALREADY!
But, alas, do the math, sooner or later this mathematical hose of cards is going to collapse on liberalism.
How about looking at the Medicare advantage plans? They’ve gone from a modest payment per month with a reasonable deductible to “free plan” with a total deductible of almost $10,000 per year. For older people on a fixed income.
Even IF the website ever works, the end product will still be shit.
The delivery will be as good as the postal service, the “customer service” will be as good as an Indian call center, and the wait will be worse than standing in line at a premier movie.
If you ever get to the front of the line, the doctor you were hoping for is no longer available. You get what they tell you you get.
Is this a great country or what? What’s left of it.
Revolts aren't won by votes.
My favorite "what it" is: What if all Leftists tell nothing but the truth for a week...
If it is fully implemented it predict there will be a worldwide depression.
People’s disposable income will dry up.
No more of the latest just got to have gadget.
No more of the latest just got to have clothes.
No more upsizing to a larger house with higher cost.
No more nicer, more expensive to own, cars.
Food prices will be going up.
People will simply be reduced to buying the necessities of life such as food, not the luxuries, and it’s people buying luxuries that drives the world economy.
For starters, that subsidy will be partially eaten up because insurance companies charge what the public will bear, and now they'll have a forced market. Then there's the situation of providing insured services. Insurance companies get out of as much as they can. They're also devious. Bad risk?....as soon as people fall behind on premiums, they'll drop those bad risks. That's what insurance companies do. Use insurance too much?...those folks will be tagged and all kinds of roadblocks will happen.
A lot of people aren't equipped to deal with insurance companies; they don't get lawyers for things. Can't you just see the new TV ads for health-care denial lawyers?
If the country were run by wiser men and women, they would make the program non-mandatory immediately and not worry about elections or blame. Every day it's in place is further destroying medical care and innovation and costing people jobs and coverage they've paid for for years and now won't have if they get sick.
And for heaven's sake, why wasn't dropping the tax on medical devices permanently not part of the very bad deal RINOs made? It makes no sense, unless they were in the mood to do whatever it takes to save Obamacare.
My quick view of the Affordable Care Act, aka ObamaCare.
I learned a long tome ago that any one, organization, or e-site that wanted either money or your banking information before I purchased anything was a fraudulent site. Even the US Post Office has posters telling you this! Anyway, don’t to such a site; don’t answer any questions; leave as soon as possible. And when done delete any and all references to it on your computer and then get it scanned for malware!
So, as soon as I confirmed that the ObamaCare site wanted banking information BEFORE they would let me in to see what they were offering I took the above steps. Better safe than sorry.
How about the rest of you? Do you recognize a scam when you see it?
Yep. That is the whole point. Less money will be paid for services, so...
There will be fewer services available as hospitals cut staffing, equipment purchases, hours, etc. in attempts to stay viable. If you don’t have huge profit margins, you can’t eat into those margins to stay afloat.
Something has to give. So instead of two weeks to get a procedure, it will take two months. Instead of seeing your physician in a month, it will take four months.
ERs will get flooded. People will leave the field due to stress or layoffs, positions will not be filled.
Quality of care will go down. Surveys of patient and employee satisfaction or other quality indicators that are driving some components of reimbursement will be suppressed for nearly all institutions, and more cuts in service and layoffs will occur. Staff that remains will become stressed, unhappy and sullen, and we will eventually have that great care they had in Eastern Bloc countries and the Soviet Union. The government will have to step in to “save” medicine, and all healthcare employees will become government employees. Unionized government employees.
That is what their plan is all along. They want this to hurt, they WANT to destroy what exists. Right now, that is private insurance and healthcare.
I hate these people such as the administration that is pushing this and their mouthpieces like the author of this article and our fellow “citizens” who are all in on this. I detest them with a white-hot burning passion.
Failure is built into every aspect of Obamacare and the ins. companies who went along with it because they salivated for new and greater profits are screwed, along with the people.
I agree. If this is implemented, it’s going to crash the global economy precisely because US disposable income will be entirely consumed by the government and by the cost of basic necessities, all of which will soar as a resul of Obamacare,
They’ll fix the website, eventually. Meanwhile the other states have their own exchanges which will “work”.
The problem isn’t “fixing the website”.
The problem is “fixing the product, e.g. Obamacare”. To do that, we need to retain the House, gain control of the Senate, and win the Presidency in 2016.
That’s all. Otherwise, get used to Obamacare.
What replaces it when it ultimately “fails” depends on who controls the federal government. End of story.
The small donations to charities that feed “starving children” all over the world will also dry up.
I believe Africa will come unglued in wars for food.
1. The voters get screwed on price.
2. The voters lose their doctor.
3. The voters (millions) will lose their private insurance.
4. The voters must wait for months for non critical care.
The voters turn against the Demonic Rat party in the 2014 elections. We then defund it if we have control of both houses of Congress. In 2016 elect a Republican as president and drive a stake through Obama Care.
The problem is fixing the product, e.g. Obamacare. To do that, we need to retain the House, gain control of the Senate, and win the Presidency in 2016.
We need to replace a lot of Rinos too. Remember, it was a Rhino that got Obama-care out of committee. And wasn’t it a Rhino turned dem that passed it in the senate?
With the 60 year old paying over twice what the 30 year old is paying it looks to me like the old are subsidizing the young.
Moreover from everything being reported it looks as though most of the current enrollees being reported are being put onto medicaid which is a state run, federally subsidized program for ‘low income’ folks.
This is nothing more than a REDISTRIBUTION scheme to take money from those that have it and give it to those who didn’t earn it
Simple, Uncle 0bamma’s credit card called the debt.
