MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) Low-wage workers at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport are calling for an increase in Minnesotas minimum wage.
The workers say they are forced to rely on government programs to get by.
Its part of a growing debate over whether to raise the states minimum wage from $7.25 to $9.50 an hour.
The Service Employees Union says 600 low-paid workers at Twin Cities Airport including wheelchair pushers, cart drivers and aircraft cleaners earn an average of $7.73 an hour, and receive millions of dollars in state public assistance.
Misrak Anbesse is a plane cleaner. She says that even at $9.50 an hour, it would be tough to get by.
We have no benefits we have no sick days, we have no leave, Anbesse said. Its better than $7.25, but its not enough even.
Anbesse says she relies on food stamps, and the union trying to organize airport workers says those workers use $1.7 million in similar public assistance every year.

Low Information Voters and Somalis.....Now ask me if I give a damn about them or their wages........!!
Anyone can clean a plane. And that is her problem. Someone would gladly replace her at 9.50 an hour. I’ll bet I could find them someone at 9.25 an hour. Heck, I bet I could get applicants in the 8 dollar range.
I was wiring a new box store a few weeks back. They where taking applicants while I was doing my job. I heard the manager say “we start everyone at 7.50 an hour” only 1 or 2 people out of 100 said that was not enough.
How much are Somalis paid back in Somalia?

what’s the minimum wage in Somalia??....Go back and complain to your government...WHAT???...You won’t???
These jobs are about as simple as they come. These are not careers. Any of you HS kids out there reading this, if this kind of job is what you aspire to you had better be good with the idea of working as many hours as you can 7 days a week and barely scraping by with a couple of room-mates. If that idea doesn't appeal to you, then you had better find a way to make yourself qualified for a more valuable job - not demand someone pay you more for a job that is just above trained-monkey level.
Shouldn’t someone tell them that if they get that raise, they will get less Governement Assistance?
It’s the same crap they’re trying to pull at Seattle-Tacoma International (SeaTac).
On Nov. 5th, the city of SeaTac (which surrounds the airport) is going to vote on Prop. 1, which will raise the minimum wage to $15.00 an hour. This is going to KILL business at the airport and cause untold grief for businesses that both service SeaTac and bring people to SeaTac. Fact is...I could very likely lose the job I’ve had for 12 years because of this.
I do understand from the proposition that there IS a way to be exempt from the $15.00 wage...and that’s if your company negotiates with a UNION. The unions LOVE this since it lines their pockets with union dues.
