Obamacare: Fewer options for many - "big black hole"
CNN ^ | October 29, 2913 | Jen Christensen

(CNN) -- Some of Thomas Harte's New Hampshire neighbors are frustrated by the Affordable Care Act's insurance marketplaces but not for the reasons you might expect.

Harte is an insurance broker. He still has his share of frustrations with the marketplace websites, but the growing number of complaints he hears come from clients and fellow brokers who have seen the policies these marketplaces offer.

Nationally the marketplaces offer tens of thousands of different policies with a wide variety of coverage, but Harte has noticed many have one thing in common: They cover a narrow network of doctors and hospitals.

That narrower network comes as particularly bad news for the residents of Concord, New Hampshire.

Concord's one hospital won't accept any policies offered by the marketplaces. To see a doctor, specialist or primary care provider affiliated with the hospital, patients on these Obamacare plans will have to pay out of their own pocket. The closest in-network hospital is in Manchester.

"Can you imagine having to go 25 miles away to Manchester to get access to a health care provider that is covered by your insurance?" Harte asked. "Right now, Concord is one big black hole of health care for people buying these plans."

And it's not just Concord. Nationally, consumers are learning a number of well-known hospitals won't accept insurance offered through the marketplaces.

“big black hole”

Is that considered racist? I just can’t quite grasp all the nuances of American racial politics. /s

Hoyer: Dems knew some patients would lose ins plans under ObamaCare (misled to allay fears) "....."We knew that there would be some policies that would not qualify, and therefore people would be required to get more extensive coverage," Hoyer said during a press briefing in the Capitol.

The promise that patients could retain their current coverage was designed, Hoyer said, "to allay the fears of somebody that had insurance — group insurance, for the most part — that do meet the criteria."

"We've used that [message] in trying to allay the fears of people who have group policies or significant coverage … through their employer, which was the overwhelming number," he said. "I think we could have caveated [to say], 'Unless you have coverage that's insufficient to accomplish the objectives of giving you adequate, quality healthcare.'"

Pressed as to whether Obama and the Democrats misled the public on the topic, Hoyer conceded the party's message could have been better articulated.

"I don't think the message was wrong. I think the message was accurate. But it was not precise enough," he said. "Clearly, it should have been caveated with, 'Assuming you have a policy that, in fact, does do what the bill is designed to do.' " ......

SLATE:".......... This is a funny use of the word "fact." As has been reported for some time -- as is only being felt now that it's real -- the regulations that followed the passage of the ACA removed the protections on plans that had been changed, by insurers, after March 2010. Conservatives claimed that people who currently enjoyed their smaller health care plans would be forced off, in the long march to single payer. The president repeatedly denied this. The president was not telling the truth......"

Rats, enjoy your “free” healthcare, good luck finding it.

Normal people, hope you can find good coverage another way.

Concord's one hospital won't accept any policies offered by the marketplaces.

I have a feeling that many doctors and hospitals will refuse the 'insurance' plans offered by the government, just like they do with Medicare and Medicaid.....

More like a galactic "black hole". The issue is will we all be pulled into the vortex or will we be able to steer away from the pull of Socialism.

“Concord’s one hospital won’t accept any policies offered by the marketplaces.”

I guess they won’t be in business very long.

The Obamas bemoaned "food deserts", and have now brought us "medical deserts". The White House medical staff is probably dining on wagyu beef and arugula, standing at the ready in case Moochelle stubs her toe.

Well, then, they are going to have to mandate more paid time off and transportation, so those people from Concord can get to their doctor appointments in Manchester. It cannot be avoided.... (/s)

‘Assuming you have a policy that, in fact, does do what the bill is designed to do.’

Which translates as “assuming you have the policy WE want you to have”. (Because obviously you’re not capable of making your own decisions)

Elitism at its finest.

Lol, a medical desert.

I keep reading how they’re taking away my “weak, not really insurance” insurance for my own good.

I liked my “weak, not really insurance” insurance. It protected my assets from a catastrophic event at a reasonable price, and that’s all it was designed to do. I guess the idea of having something to lose is evil in and of itself, and I should be punished.
