Energy Dept. Seeks Company to Turn Sunshine Into Gasoline

Although CO2 is considered a "greenhouse gas" that contributes to climate change, if the Energy Department (DOE) finds partners to capitalize on the research of one of its laboratories, someday cars might run on sunshine. Technically, cars would run on the product of sunlight, CO2, and water using a "two-step solar thermochemical cycle" developed by the Albuquerque, New Mexico government lab. The DOE posted the special notice seeking interested companies on the Federal Business Opportunities website on Tuesday:

Sandia National Laboratories (Sandia) is conducting ongoing research and development into solar fuels, the conversion of sunlight, CO2, and H2O into high energy density, gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel pre-cursors...

Sandia is seeking a company or companies interested in this unique opportunity which will lead to the demonstration and deployment of this technology.

Researchers have been working on this idea for some time, according to a 2007 press release from the Sandia lab. At that time, one of the researchers speculated that although a prototype of a device to carry out the chemical process was already under development, it was "a good 15 to 20 years away from being on the market."

The special notice released this week did not contain a timetable, but did note that companies interested in the project "must have a significant interest in developing this technology to the demonstration and deployment stage."

That is basically what they were describing. If they can find a way to short cut that process that would be great. But I found it humorous how studiously they avoided explaining the basic points of the process that you just laid out. Not to mention that the end product is just man made petroleum.

I would like to know what the chemical reactions are here. It will take a lot of energy to unbind the Carbon, Oxygen, and Hydrogen. Good luck with the carbon. Then the products will have to be stored and then recombined in the car to make it run. What the hell is the CO2 doing in there anyway?

I know about breaking water into Hydrogen and Oxygen, and then recombining the two by combustion. A lot of energy is needed, and then the energy available for use at the end is much less than the energy required at the beginning.

So what is it doing? They can’t just throw bullroar at me and expect me to buy it.

CO2 and H2O are the natural products of burning gasoline. Converting them back to gasoline has to be an energy intensive operation.

It’s really a matter of photochemical justice. Chemical reactions are so just so...undiverse. They discriminate against higher energy products and reagents. They are haters and bigots whose hatred of energy-containing products leads them, time after time, to shun and damage the self-images of low-energy compounds and substances. Meanwhile, having been kept down since the founding of this nation, generations of low-energy compounds, who cling to their electrons and their outdated visions of physics and chemistry, refuse to just move forward. Now is the time. No longer can we wait, make no mistake. If 0bama cannot urge low-energy substances to “do what’s right”, to help their fellow reagents, he will, by executive order, command them to do so.
