Ga. National Guard will ignore Pentagon directive to recognize same-sex spouses
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution ^ | November 1, 2013 | Greg Bluestein, Jim Galloway and Daniel Malloy

The Georgia National Guard this afternoon indicated it intends to ignore a directive from Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and will continue to send same-sex spouses of National Guard personnel elsewhere for benefits guaranteed by the Pentagon.

Here's the statement received late Friday from Joseph Quimby, deputy director of public affairs for the state Department of Defense:

“The State of Georgia does not recognize same sex marriages and is not authorizing the Georgia National Guard to process the applications for same-sex married benefits at state facilities. Any personnel seeking to apply for same-sex married benefits will be referred to federal facilities.”

The statement was in response to this piece by the Associated Press:

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel on Thursday sharply criticized U.S. states that are defying the Pentagon by refusing to allow National Guard facilities to issue ID cards that enable same-sex spouses of military members to claim benefits.

"This is wrong," Hagel said in a speech in New York....

What could possibly go wrong?

If you like your state, you will be able to keep your state. Period.

If you like your sovereignty, you will be able to keep your sovereignty. Period.

No one will take them away. No matter what.

Makes sense to me. National Guardsmen are state employees until such time as they get on federal orders (with the exception of reserve technicians...who, during the week, are federal civil service).

I don’t really see the controversy here.

(yes, I’m being intentionally a little bit obtuse)

In his remarks to an Anti-Defamation League centennial dinner speech, Hagel did not name the states that are defying Pentagon policy on this issue. But the Pentagon has cited nine: Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas and West Virginia.

Seems we have nine Governors with a spine...

Hagel said he instructed Grass to meet with the adjutants general from the nine states where the ID cards are being denied at state facilities. He said those adjutants general, who work for their states' governor, "will be expected to comply" with Pentagon policy on this issue.

How does Hagel expect to make these adjutants general who work for their Governors "comply" with an order clearly not within the framework of Hagel chain of command...

This is Florida-Georgia weekend, so I will not congratulate Georgia for this today. But, after the game tomorrow, I will cheer for this ballsy decision!

As I have said ad nauseum on FR the states will start to go their own way. GA leads the way.

I would LOVE to see the states begin to claw back the money they send to DC for ‘Education’. Common Core is a disaster and the States are the entities that are tasked with educating our nation’s youth. The Feds just usurped the power........STAND UP STATES AND TAKE BACK THE POWER TO EDUCATE YOUR OWN CHOLDREN!

RE “They can’t kill or imprison all of us.”:

and

“...Tell that to the 6 million Jews and millions of Gypsies, ...”

Those folks didn’t shoot back and actively hunt down those perpetrating it.

This isn’t Europe, we aren’t Europeans, and this isn’t the 1940s.

Won’t be free, and won’t be easy, and won’t be painless for them.

Yep, the German had gun registration ,followed by gun confiscation. And no one,or at least very few even protested.

ANY person or government that wants to register your guns really wants to take them away.

Avoid registration because it has always ended in confiscation.

Uh, okay. But what does that have to do with the story?

Wondered that myself. O.P. is a fine poster though.

So Fort Sumter is now in Georgia?

There's a Sumter County in GA, its county seat is Americus. I lived there for many years, and can believe this.

Looks like when it comes to gay activist bullies, Georgia’s finest aren’t gonna be the metaphorical nerds who just let themselves be stuffed into trash cans, toilets and lockers all day without doing anything about it.

Acts 4
15 ¶ But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves,
16 Saying, What shall we do to these men? for that indeed a notable miracle hath been done by them is manifest to all them that dwell in Jerusalem; and we cannot deny it.
17 But that it spread no further among the people, let us straitly threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this name.
18 And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus.
19 But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye.
20 For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.

God is a far higher authority than Chuck Hagel or Obama. After all, where else does Chuck Hagel receive the right to govern at all?

Praise be to God for men of courage like Joseph Quimby!
