Well, for starters, Buchanan ushered in the Civil War. Prior to that event, he stocked the U.S. Army with southern sympathizers who sent them off on idiotic errands fighting Indians and Mormons who didn't have any particular grudge against the U.S. Army until then. He also kept a 'Nancy Boy'. He's the main reason that a key swing state like Pennsylvania has not even offered up a presidential candidate on any major ticket since, let alone elected one.

Hell, even tiny North Dakota can claim a president (Teddy Roosevelt) since Buchanan put the reputation of our fair Commonwealth into the crapper.
