BRAZIL, Ind. - A western Indiana police department's search dog is off the job after biting an 11-year-old boy's leg during a demonstration inside the county courthouse. Brazil police chief Clint McQueen says the boy suffered puncture wounds to his calf when the dog bit him during a mock drug search being done for elementary school students as part of a Red Ribbon Awareness week kick-off event at the Clay County Courthouse. Judge J. Blaine Akers arranged for K-9 teams to carry out a simulated drug raid, to educate a group of fifth-graders about drug awareness. A small amount of illegal drugs was planted, and the dog, named Max, began searching the children. Two scenarios went on without a hitch, but during the third vignette, according to the police report and the dog's handler, the 11-year-old began moving his legs, which he believed prompted Max's action to bite the male juvenile on the left calf. McQueen said the dog released his bite within seconds after commands from his handler, but the incident has drawn criticism from area residents. "It wasn't the dog's fault and it wasn't the kid's fault. But my gosh the kid is gonna carry those memories for a long time," Clay County resident Ron Pell said. The child was taken to St. Vincent Clay Hospital and was treated and released with minor injuries. McQueen said it was an unfortunate accident. He says the dog won't do police work until test results from a veterinarian are returned.

Can I get a WTF???!!?!!??

Why are we indoctrinating 5th graders about how to kowtow to The Masters' bully-boys, and their feral police dogs?

If the kid would have punched the dog after it bit him, it would have been a felony...

Judge J. Blaine Akers arranged for K-9 teams to carry out a simulated drug raid, to educate a group of fifth-graders about drug awareness.

To really make a realistic simulation, you also have to tase Granny and shoot the dog with a tranquilizer.

I’m surprised they didn’t shoot the dog afterward.

I would answer YES to the indoctrination of kids. But kinda object to the “feral” Police dogs. There are several different types of K9s. Search and rescue, attack and drug sniffing and probably a couple I don't know about. K9 dogs that are trained to find drugs think it is a game. Much like training a hunting dog. Find the hidden item and get a treat. Whether it is a bird, a rabbit, a ball or a bundle of marijuana the dog just thinks about finding it to get his treat. This particular dog probably got all excited over the kid's moving his leg and (my guess) a bunch of squealing fifth graders. I can forgive the dog but not the cop or the Judge that set it up. K9 Handler should know better than to put even a trained dog into that environment. My source for this is a K9 Deputy working drug smuggling interdiction here in the drug smuggling capital of the nation.

I am surprised they didn’t shoot the kid. How did they not shoot the kid?

Still surprised they didn’t shoot the kid. He should have been shot, after all the dog did assault him and they don’t know for a fact that he wasn’t packing.

I agree with you.

Repetition of important stories like this is a GOOD thing.

Thanks for posting the link, so readers can review that story, too.

Not impressed with K9s; they are more legal trouble than they are worth, if they are dope and bite dogs.

Cadaver and search dogs fine, bite dogs tend to try to eat everyone, including the handler.

And the lawsuits? Good Lord...
