Detroit poised to elect its first white mayor since 1974

DETROIT — The last time there was a white mayor of Detroit, the Vietnam War was just ending and the nation was getting used to a Supreme Court decision called Roe vs. Wade.

But now this city, which is in the midst of a trial to determine whether it is eligible for bankruptcy protection, is set to elect its first white mayor since 1974, Mike Duggan, and by an overwhelming margin. Recent polls show Duggan up by a nearly 2-1 margin over his opponent, Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon, in a city that is 82% African American.

Make no mistake, Duggan is a sleazeball but it does indicate how much things are changing in Michigan and Detroit. The fact that he got close enough that they tried to cheat him out of it is a big deal but the fact that we have an SOS tough enough to prevent that cheating is even more important.

I am not a native, but I have been here quite a while but I wasn't aware of all the players on the county or local level. A conservative friend tells me Duggan was from the Ed McNamara camp which was maybe bad or worse than this Ficano carnival.

Perhaps Cripplecreek can give you a quick briefing on how our Attorney General and Gov. post the last election cycle have cleaned up voting, even in Detroit. It looks like no ballot stuffing shenanigans this time...

I don't know a lot about Duggan other than the fact that he ran a write in campaign that basically consisted of "I haven't been indicted yet".

One thing he has going for him is the backing of big money like Penske and Ilitch who are middle of the road types who want business in Detroit.

That issue has since been solved without federal interference but there have been indictments for vote fraud next door in Dearborn. We do have a "Must ask" ID law when voting. You don't have to show an ID but you do have to sign an affidavit that you know its a crime to vote illegally and signing the affidavit is an admission of guilt. Combined with new strict auditing, the ID law does seem to be working. Detroit is under a microscope with a new law that requires strict SOS oversight of areas that have a history of problem elections.
