DETROIT — The last time there was a white mayor of Detroit, the Vietnam War was just ending and the nation was getting used to a Supreme Court decision called Roe vs. Wade.
But now this city, which is in the midst of a trial to determine whether it is eligible for bankruptcy protection, is set to elect its first white mayor since 1974, Mike Duggan, and by an overwhelming margin. Recent polls show Duggan up by a nearly 2-1 margin over his opponent, Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon, in a city that is 82% African American.

In 2005 a mixed race man named Freman Hendrix ran against incumbent mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. During the course of that mayoral campaign the issue of Mr. Hendrix mixed race heritage came up along side skepticism that he wasn’t “Black enough” to run Detroit. One can look at that as being in regards to racial or cultural issues/background. Mr. Hendrix ultimately lost.
I’m going to go the pessimistic route and say Detroit isn’t going to see a white mayor for a long time.

At the state level, there isn’t much difference between Democrat and Republican.
What Detroit needs is a CONSERVATIVE.

The prior White Mayor was Roman Gribbs, who is actually still alive. He was a semi-Conservative, law & order Democrat who tried to clean up the disastrous mess of his liberal predecessor, Jerome Cavanagh, but it was too late by then. This current guy running is no Roman Gribbs.
No, no Detroit GOP.
Actually this is almost a stroke of genius.
Bring in a White Mayor now and you can blame HIM for the sins of the last 40 years...(L’s/D’s seemed to be able to blame the R’s for all the maladies of the country when they finally wond back Congress after 40 years).
Of course, in Detroit, like IL, the Mayor (GOV) is just a stepping stone to becoming a license plate manufacturer.
Gary, Indiana elected a White Mayor not too long ago (a Dem, of course, over a Black Republican). He wasn’t able to do anything and resigned early.

In the bio on his campaign site, he refers repeatedly to “millage” (read tax-raising) programs that he got through.
I wonder if that euphemism will spread to other Democrat campaign verbiage.

Doesn’t matter what color the mayor is, if he’s yet another life-sucking liberal. Detoilet will still continue to rot.
Maybe the blacks in Detroit are finally getting a clue.
But then, why anybody would want to be mayor of Detroit is a puzzle unless it’s to continue the graft.
Detroit WAS a grand city. Now, it is a damned city. A white mayor will still face too many challenges to bring the city up from the sewer, (BTW I grew up there).
Unless officials do something very radical, the situation on the ground looks bleak.
The only way to start is to cut crime WAY down. If a person does not feel safe after crossing 8 Mile Road (hey, remember Eminem’s film, which sounds either like chocolate sweet or a rectal enema)? They're not going to be opening any businesses there.
