280,000 Kentuckians to Give Up Their Current Health Insurance Policies [Obamacare Strikes Again]
Insurance Journal ^ | 11/4/2013 | Roger Alford

About 280,000 Kentuckians will have to give up their current insurance policies in the months ahead and enroll in alternatives that comply with the Affordable Care Act, the federal health care reform law.

Kentucky Department of Insurance spokeswoman Ronda Sloan said individual policies for about 130,000 people will be discontinued, as will small group policies for about 150,000 more.

Those affected, Sloan said, will receive discontinuation letters when their policies come up for renewal.

“This is because their current plans do not meet the requirements of the Affordable Care Act,” Sloan said in an emailed statement. “Instead, they are being transitioned to new ACA-compliant policies. This is not a `cancellation’ or a `termination.’ No one is losing coverage.”

Tea party activist David Adams, one of the state’s most ardent critics of the Affordable Care Act, said the number of people being forced to give up policies of their choosing is unacceptable.

“They’re likely either coming from a plan that was structured the way they liked it for catastrophic coverage or one of the Cadillac plans they liked,” Adams said. “In any event, they’re now being put into a cookie-cutter machine that is not consumer-friendly.”

Kentucky has been receiving good reviews for its handling of the health care reforms so far. A month into the rollout, more than 31,000 Kentuckians have signed up for medical coverage, the vast majority of whom will become Medicaid recipients. Coverage is set to begin Jan. 1.

Kentucky’s online insurance marketplace has avoided the widespread technical glitches that have plagued the federal health benefit exchange.

As of Oct. 31, more than 345,000 people have visited the Kentucky Health Benefit Exchange, most of whom have conducted pre-screenings to determine eligibility for Medicaid or government subsidies to help with the cost of private insurance.

Adams said the issue of forcing nearly 300,000 currently insured Kentuckians into different policies “blows Kentucky’s claims of success out of the water.”

Gov. Steve Beshear issued an executive order last year calling for Kentucky to create its online marketplace where residents can shop for insurance coverage. The state received more than $250 million from the federal government to set it up.

Beshear has said four out of five Kentuckians will be eligible federal subsidies to help cover the cost of coverage. Those subsidies, based on income, range from less than $100 to more than $500 a month to help pay premiums.

Wait till people start dying because their insurance was cancelled such as cancer patients whose treatments were stopped. Communism so far has killed 100 million people, but sadly we still have idiots in this country who need to see it firsthand, need to see it in action.

Transitioned??? Sounds better than forced into more expensive plans covering things you don’t need and won’t use while subsidizing deadbeats’ plans. I thought Democrats favored “Truth in advertising”.

That pic is probably not far off the mark. You should also write “Good thing we’re exempt from it!” which reminds me: They KNEW this thing was a disaster which is exactly why they made themselves exempt which shows their only agenda is to damage the country - Flat out treason.

I agree.

What’s sad is, many of these young kids who buy into this collectivist bull sh*t (aka Obama and progressivism) think they’re being “oh so cutting edge” and “new.” In reality they’re simply allowing themselves to be ruled and ruined by dictators like Obama. Fools inviting their own destruction.

Our little weasel governor, Beshear, created a state exchange by executive order (a la 0bama) since he knew he couldn’t get it done through the legislative process. The weasel has been crowing about the greatness of 0bamacare and now Kentuckians are losing their plans and medicaid enrollment is accelerating. The weasel has our state on the fast track to financial ruin.

Why is someone not pointing out that these so-called "subsidies" are just another way of "redistributing" the hard-earned pay of working men and women from one set of individuals to another?

Every time a Democrat is questioned about people losing their insurance policies, they point out, "Oh, but there will be "subsidies" which will make it more affordable."

I posted thos on another thread. I think it is important to measure this mess against the expectations.

Kentucky has been heldup as a success story.
about 5,000 have signed-up for private insurance
about 28,00 have signed-up for Medicaid
http://migration.kentucky.gov/Newsroom/governor/20131101kynect.htm

As a point of reference, 640,000 are uninsured in Kentucky. An estimated 332,000 were thought to be eligible to gain coverage through the exchange. So Ky has enrolled 1.5% of their eligible number.
http://governor.ky.gov/healthierky/Documents/MedicaidExpansionWhitePaper.pdf

Now we see a large number of previously insured people will lose their insurance.
