Posted on 11/05/2013 6:56:38 AM PST by tobyhill
ounger, healthier Americans needed to make Obamacare financially viable are not signing up in sufficient numbers. Most enrollees have been people over 50, many with pre-existing medical conditions.
The skew toward the older crowd raises concerns that there will not be enough payments from young people to offset the cost of providing coverage for the older ailing population, the Wall Street Journal reported.
The early numbers, while statistically too small to draw conclusions, raise concerns about the practicality of the insurance marketplaces.
"We need a broad range of people to make this work, and we're not seeing that right now," Heather Thiltgen of Medical Mutual, one of Ohio largest insurers told the Journal. "We're seeing the population skewing older."
The target enrollee is someone around 40 years if age.
If the drift continues, a more expensive cohort of customers, older and less healthy, would drive up costs for everyone. The federal government had committed to reimburse insurers if they underestimated costs.

That’s OK, we have a printing press!
The answer is of course anyone who didn't sleep through HS econ class.
The Marx/Obama/Alinsky model was supposed to be simple. The only variable was reality.
Young people weren’t going to hang out for hours trying to get through the web-site. People looking for freebies and people with preexisting conditions would take the time. They will wait until the process is easier or the fines get unaffordable to sign up.
They couldn’t see this coming?
The media couldn’t see this coming?
Placing a burden on the young this large, gets no media coverage? The same young that can’t get jobs out of college. The same young with thousands in student load debt.
They have to come up with thousands more to pay the medical bills of older persons, many of which were irresponsible.
All you old folks gonna have to empty out your 401k’s, IRA’s and pension plans to pay for your healthcare...cause your rates are going UP. The young don’t want to pay for your premium.
This AM I had an email from Navy buddy that the VA is no longer accepting Medicare and has asked VA patients to get Obamacare. He was asking if others have gotten the same treatment.
Prescient TS PRESCIENT......
I mean, DUHHHHHHHHHH! What a total f#cking IDIOT.
I’m going to predict the future so mark my words:
The penalty is going to be raised to “bully” people into enrolling in the system.
Called a death spiral.
Obamacare needed to have paid for 100% of the premiums for one or two years for everyone to establish the pools, then the companies would know how to set prices and those who dont get a great deal would have signed up keeping the price reasonable.
But then the CBO couldnt even fudge those #s to look good.
Not for people who don't sign up. The healthy people should boycott this turd (imo).
Dream on. When they realize that they’re going to get royally screwed without a kiss if they apply for Obamacare, that will be the end of Obamacare.
Good analysis, my FRiend.
In their model, the dependent variable is, of course, magic (the reciprocal of reality), and they never see it.
How to fix model?
They only know to take away rights and add repression (which makes things worse, but they don't see that either)
How can they sign up (as if they’d want to) when the site is constantly down and/or not working when it’s up?
> but Obama said that it won’t cost more than a cell phone bill. That is also a bald-faced lie. I got a cancellation letter and the lowest cost plan I can find is 70% more than what my canceled policy was.
Obama IS a walking lie in every sense of the word from beginning to end; everything from his origins, to his father, and to every single thing he says and does.
The other big wrench in this whole concept is that with the number of jobs that have been killed off over the last 4 years the unemployment rate among their target audience is sky-high. It isn’t going to happen. Many of the young, like their middle-aged, laid off counterparts have given up looking and/or are scraping along.
Someone who thought that command economies actually work.
What they need to do is eliminate the penalty/tax for not signing up, and replace it with a prison term (during which, of course, the convict’s health care will be free). /s
“but Obama said that it won’t cost more than a cell phone bill”
He just misspoke, he meant the avg. Corporate Cell phone bill.
“...VA is no longer accepting Medicare and has asked VA patients to get Obamacare.”
Good golly. So, the US government is no longer accepting US government “insurance”.
He said in the plan he was told about they would base premiums on the US poverty line which is about $23K for a family of four. Then they would set a base premium rate, lets use $500 a month for an example.
At the poverty line the premium would be nothing and assistance would come in the form of the EBT card (like food stamps) to cover out of pocket expenses (deductibles). Once families make 200% above the poverty line they would pay their premiums based on how much their fair share would be on a graduated percentage basis.
So, at $50,000 a year the $500 premium would be $700. At $100,000 a year the premium would go to $1,000 a month and so on. The Obama team (he said) felt that it was fair for someone making $250,000 a year to pay $5,000 or more a month.
It seemed impossible to me until John Roberts changed the premium idea from a purchase to a tax. I now believe that is exactly where Valerie Jarrett and associates wants to take us.
The new premiums do cost less than a cell phone bill, assuming you buy a new i-phone 5 every month.
Why should it. The US Govt knows the US Govt IOU are worthless.
I have a very fundamental question about all of this. I keep hearing about the number of people who are low risk and healthy required to sign up for Obamacare needed to keep ‘it afloat.” What the hell “it” are they trying to keep afloat?
If I’m not mistaken, the tyrant hasn’t gone full single-payer yet and the insurance policies everyone is supposed to be signing up for are still private companies (e.g., capitalism), aren’t they?
So....young people with jobs and young people with no money...some could pay and some need subsidies... How does the government get off thinking the scheme would be solvent if the ones that ‘could’ pay would only sign up. Is the tyrant getting a cut off the top from the private insurers who take the risk?
This just smells like bullshit to me. There is no economic benefit for the government unless they are stealing from insurers. We still have 15, 30 or 45 million uninsured here (depending on what butt licker Democrat operative you listen to). That number ain’t gonna change and they will all get subsidies. Money that is supposed to go to insurers from actual paying customers isn’t going to the government, is it?
Even the heavily subsidized folks who end up paying very small premiums still have a very large problem .... the high deductibles make the insurance too expensive to use.
The calculus of those young healthy folks who were supposed to pay for this: “You mean I can pay more for my health insurance so old farts get care - or - I can pay a small IRS fine and just sign up for insurance when I need it? And they thought we would pay for something we don’t need? DUH.”
Exactly! & what happens when these people go to use their free insurance & realize what they have to cough up? I doubt they care about their credit so doctors/hospitals eat the cost & our premiums will continue to skyrocket. Cloward-Piven on steroids.
Actually, I’ve heard of doctors requiring the deductible up front because they know if they don’t get it before services are rendered, they’ll be stuck with the bill. This is happening with surgeries, etc. One fellow was given a bill of $20K BEFORE surgery. He went back to his PCP who went to another hospital and worked out a cash price for him ... $3K.
Good to know..should charge up front.
I expected ObamaCare to be a catastrophic failure with negligible response from young healthy Americans, but I didn't expect someone to be able to refer to the small sample size five weeks into the sign-up period. Even by Obama standards, this has been a debacle. The best plan is to repeal the dreadful ACA, give the remaining problems some thought, and then see what other laws could be repealed to improve medical care and access.
Like, math is like totally hard and stuff! Like, is there a new Colbert tonight?
An analogy that comes to mind:
You go to the car dealer to buy a small, high mileage, affordable commuter. The dealer tells you that a new law requires you to buy the model with 4 doors, leather seats, deluxe airbags, 4 wheel drive, tow package, satellite radio, navigation, and high HP engine. It’s a better deal, and it is now required by law, or you will be taxed/penalized. It has been ruled constitutional by the Supreme Court.
So when you relent and agree to purchase this unaffordable luxury model, the salesman offers one more detail. You will not be able to take the car. It will be given to someone who is more deserving than you.
My primary care doctor sent notice to his patients that he is transitioning his practice to “executive care”. By that you pay an annual cost of $1650 for unlimited wellness preventive care and testing. If you need additional services he will recommend other providers.
What did you expect?
When you bring on 50 million previously uninsured, someone has to pay.
For productive people: Costs Up, Coverage Down.
Spread that peanut butter as thin as possible.
> The penalty is going to be raised to bully people into enrolling in the system.
That would require a legislative fix, and Bammy does not have the votes in the House. Truth is he may no longer have them in the Senate either.
I haven’t seen anything stop him yet. He will sidestep using some political manuever by getting enough votes when he pulls out his blackmail files on those who don’t fall in lockstep with him. Definately the most nefarious president has ever had. He’s fooled a lot of Americans with false body language, semantics, outright lying, in other words traits exhibited by very skilled liars who know what people look for when trying to detect deception.

Oh that is good. Put that in my memory bank...: )
It will end up in history books a true puzzle. Civil War One was supposedly over slavery; Civil War Two was over something so beneficial as Healthcare.
That worked. AARP keeps the boomers in line.
Guess who's exempt from ObamaCare?
Barack Obama and his family
Congress and their families
Justice Department and their families
Supreme Court and their families
Federal Courts and their families
1,200 Corporations and Unions...
Now guess who's NOT exempt...
Great stuff ... but in this case I'm thankful companies were able to protect their workers. That will be the beachhead we can fight from...
I would be willing to bet a nice lunch that the majority of Americans who are 40 or so in age are married, have a job that they just lost 25
% of their gross income at, and have a family & a mortgage.
How in he** cam they ever pay for Obamacare???

Does John Roberts have ANY family members that are getting caught up in the Obamacare web of lies?
Wonder how much they care about John now.
How about the elderly men who are widowed & have to pay for pregnancy costs & birth control?
How about women over the age of 50 who are asked to pay for the same??
It just gets dumber & dumber every day.
So when do they start holding a gun to people’s heads to force them to sign up.
I’m only half kidding.
