Posted on 11/05/2013 2:49:26 PM PST by Carbonsteel
Four days before Halloween, on Sunday morning, October 27, 2013, terrorists in Mexico's Michoacan state blacked out the electric grid, leaving some 420,000 powerless and thirteen dead. That same Sunday night, National Geographic aired the docudrama American Blackout. This fictionalized account of a cyber attack on the electric grid depicts some of the horrific consequences of a nationwide blackout lasting 10 days.

Earlier this year there were attacks on the Arkansas electric grid, but they arrested a guy for it last month who looked like an ordinary white guy.
EBT slaves run out of food in 48 hrs and start open pillaging of nicer areas after 5 days. Cops will be guarding their own homes.
I’ll be arming and coordinating.
I watched it on a 13 inch TV and commercial free, it looked very effective to me, as far as being geared to the general public.
The British version which ran several weeks earlier, was useless, there was very little related to preparedness in it, the makers of that one seemed to drift into just making another drama and forgetting what the purpose was.
While the American version was not intended to show how-tos, it did show a variety of situations that revealed to non-preppers, the consequences of not planning in advance.
American Blackout? Isn’t that racist?
WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE... none of us will get out of this alive... not in this life but we will have a chance at eternal life.
The rats always want to manufacture a crisis... what they find to be bad for you... is actually found to have value... things that can kill you can actually save your life. The left must have evil manipulation and lies to coerce and govern because with out those... they have nothing.
“The rats always want to manufacture a crisis... “.
That gives odumbo and Holder the opporunity to tell their people that it would be O.K. to go steal, it’s called “sharing the wealth”.
Bring it on! I’m locked and loaded and will drop the hammer on the first (and possibly more) who try stealing from me.
Funny thing about these shows is that they always show the urban horrors.
Show me some of those rural horrors that result from societal collapse. LOL
Let just say I am in perfect harmony with your plan!
Living in a very rural area... I agree completely! Around here I will have neighbors helping neighbors and miles of security teams protecting the area. That is just how we roll.
Wasn't the survivalist pretty rural?
I hope you are also loaded with food and water. If you live in the city or the burbs your water will go off shortly after the lights go out. If you do not have water stored up what are you going to use to cook all that survival food you have bought? Water and water filtration system are key to surival.
What are you going to use to cook it on? If you have a rocket stove which you can make out a #10 can and a couple of regular cans you can use yard twigs to create intense heat and boil water or cook food in a skillet or pan inside your fireplace. Very little smoke or smell.
I just think rural people should make it clear that there are really two different nations within one. Just because they may riot in the city is no reason to impose martial law on rural America where life goes on.
When the people in the urban areas flee the cities and go into the rural area to pillage and loot they will either have to help, move on, or fertilize the fields for years to come. It will be a bloodbath.
I really hope this never ever ever happens.
First thing you need to do in this scenario. Be it an EMP attack, cyber attack, or an inside job, is to plug up all the sinks, baths and get anything that can hold water and fill them ALL up. All your pots, pans, jugs, gas cans, cups, coffee pots, vases, EVERYTHING fill it to the brim before the water turns off.
I have a useful habit that I developed several years ago when I ended up without electricity for a couple of weeks due to an ice storm.
I live on the shore of a lake and as soon as it freezes, I gut a 3x3 foot hole in the ice and keep it open all winter. I throw a piece of plywood over it and go out and break what little ice forms every day. It will come in handy for flushing toilets or washing and if worse comes to worse, cooking.
That would be very useful. If the grid ever went down for good, or you were ever without power for a long time, you have an icebox in your backyard. Such an easy way to preserve your food for the winter.
Filling the bathtubs used to be the number one order 50 and 60 years ago, for hurricanes, for anything.
Check out the AquaRain water filters. They will filter almost anywater and make it safe to drink.
I need to get a hand pump that I can slap on my wellhead. A very shallow water table makes it easy to draw water from.
Good idea to get a hand pump for a shallow well. For deep wells, there are also solar pump systems and/or small diesel generator systems (pretty simple to have along with the regular AC pump with transfer switch if already powered by grid, electrical inlet, outdoor switch and 4-conductor generator cable with generator plug made to plug into inlet, see National Electrical Code).
he was prepared smart, but stoopid operationally.
Prepper ping, I know we had another thread on this show, but worthwhile for more discussion.
If electrical power were down in cities, fuel would be unavailable. Station pumps need electricity. Traffic jams would occur. Traffic from cities to rural areas would be very limited and monitored. Access to parks and other government lands would be very limited and monitored (sanitation, civil order and other issues). Looks like we’d all be trapped and should stock up on books, cards and board games in advance. Me...I think I’ll get a croquet set or build a miniature golf course. ;-)
Heh. You can be the one on the left. I’ll be the one on the right. ;-)
Just had an X3 solar flare today. An X16 and its the Carrington Event again only this time there is a such thing as electronics on Earth. (plugged in affected)
Oh, no. Come to realize it, I am the one on the right! :-(
He was, if you think back over his segment, the makers still did an OK job of showing pitfalls or consequences to remind even the most hard core preppers, to think.
Remember that they weren’t there to show success, but to reach different segments of the TV audience with a personalized prod, for them to get more involved and less complacent.
I’ve been reviewing water systems, and have read a lot of complaints lately about the quality of the berkey filters. I’m leading towards a katadyn, but I’m still not sure...
I grew up in a fairly rural part of urban (rat) state, and moved back. I always felt like I have more in common with rural folk in the midwest, south and west than people in suburbia and urban areas here in New England.
And when I talk with my rural neighbors, most of them hold views many FReepers share.
I think that is the big divide in America.
Hat tip to Freeper Betis70 for the heads up.
I have a shallow water table as well and am going to get something like the following:
Haven’t been able to find out what chemicals / heavy metals the Aquarain filters out. Went with the Aquacera Ceracarb instead.
I watched it today, 4-6 pm. It was intriguing, and so realistic that I could not wait for it to be over.
Hope to God this does not happen in real life, but the next solar flare could change that real quick.
Fmr. CIA Dir. Jim Woolsey warns of existential EMP threat to America
It's long, but worth watching during supper (or whatever) instead of, say "The Voice", even though I occasionally like watching that, too. :-)
Of note is that at one point Sarah Palin gets some credit for working toward protection of the grid in Alaska while she was Gov. Granted, I don't know if there's been any follow-through, but it stands to reason that energy rich states would have more financial capability to take action. The panel seems to feel that the states are where progress can best be made.

The Carrington Event affected telegraphs.
Actually, rural crimes are generally worse in collapsing societies. The level of violence increases with the distance from law enforcement. Even now, many crimes in rural areas exceed the level of violence found in many cities.
The statistics are not as apparent due to population densities. Though now rare, in the case of a major breakdown, the law of the jungle will hit fast and hard...
LOL you go right on ahead and take your chances in the city, I’ll be fine with my trusted friends and neighbors.
Rednecks do better
There was a murder here almost 40 years ago. Its a regular horror show. LOL
Cool, thanks for the link, will take a look in the AM.
I did just have my jaw drop watching The Voice, but that is entertainment (Jacquie Lee singing “I Put a Spell on You”). I also like to be informed.
