Bill de Blasio overwhelmingly was elected mayor here Tuesday, becoming the first Democrat to lead New York in 20 years and ushering in an era of activist liberal governance in the nations largest city.
In early returns Tuesday night, de Blasio was soundly defeating Republican Joe Lhota, a protégé of former mayor Rudy Giuliani.
De Blasio campaigned on a mantle of progressive change following Mayor Michael R. Bloombergs 12 years in office, highlighting what he saw as a tale of two cities. The moneyed Manhattan elite have had their mayor, he argued, and now the 46 percent of New Yorkers living at or near the poverty level need one of their own.
De Blasios administration will be a laboratory of sorts for modern progressivism testing whether an anti-establishment activist can effectively manage a sprawling municipal government and lessen growing inequality between the rich and poor.

All those with the means to get the hell out, should do so as soon as possible.
This is going to make the Dinkins Days look like the prosperous god-old-days.
I pity New Yorkers , those of whom voted against this piece of pig excrement . I agree , all good folks should get out , abandon ship. Let it descend into 3rd world rathole status .
Put a fence around it and call it good .
NYC deserves what’s coming to them.
Hope he raises NYC taxes 400% and makes it illegal to eat hamburgers and pizza.
F NYC and its people.
We have paid a steep, steep price to defend that city.
Sounds like very few of them voted against this communist pos. Didn’t have any plans to ever go to ny again. Feel bad for the few conservatives that are stuck there for one reason or another.
They still don’t understand that Detroit was not a fluke but the canary.
Compost commenters predicting ruin for New York. Well, at least they see the future.
“De Blasio campaigned on a mantle of progressive change following Mayor Michael R. Bloombergs 12 years in office, highlighting what he saw as a tale of two cities.”
It was the best of times, soon it will be the worst of times.
Nuke the site from orbit, it’s the only way to be sure.
Do you think the WashPost has ever used the term “conservative governance”?
>> We have paid a steep, steep price to defend that city.
Surely you’re not referring to 9-11.
>> De Blasio campaigned on a mantle of progressive change
What’s next, bestiality?
If they think there’s inequality between rich and poor now, just wait until the progressives really get in gear.
The only uncertainty about NY now is: Communist, Shariah or both?
Wondering if DeBlasio will order missiles and troops for the Thanksgiving day parade this year? Maybe even wear one of those dear leader jackets, to show New Yorks strength to its capitalist enimies and stuff.
may all their dreams come true......the joke's on them....
The troofers are claiming that the democrat’s opponents were the ones behind 9.11.
In fact, there is plenty of evidence - now - pointing to Obama’s people and Obama himself having a finger in 9.11.
gee I wonder if he’ll tax those stinking stagehands who make $450,000 a year.....
“If they think theres inequality between rich and poor now, just wait until the progressives really get in gear.”
I’m beginning to believe that Solzhenitsyn was right, that the only way you can bring people out of the darkness of Socialism, and it’s ever-optimistic feel-good propaganda, is to make them live through it.
He’s going to use Karl Marx’s ideas to help the middle class?
That’s not going to work.
Looks like a new, frightening era is about to begin in New York City. I remember the city in the 1970s. I hope it doesn't regress to the hell hole it was back then...
“The only uncertainty about NY now is: Communist, Shariah or both?”
Because of “tolerance” and “diversity”, why not both???
It will take a while for that freight-train of failure to pick up speed, but once it gets going again...
“Liberal Governance” is on its last legs. Good luck, Bill. You’ve been elected on the wrong side of history.
I look for states to start breaking up ala WV / VA.
“Liberal governance”? Like saying Hitler’s election in Germany was “ushering in a new era of non-militant governance”.
Leave it up to the Wash Post to coverup for a hardcore communist like DeBlasio and his avowed commie wife.
All the good folks left a long time ago
Degenerate animals can fight it out in the concrete jungle, and the Wall street crooks can leave too if the commies try to get too nuts
When will the GOP ever get around to debunking this misleading and foolish charge?
The ONLY time the gap between the rich and the poor is NOT growing is when the economy is in decline. Period. Easy example:
You're rich (congrats!), and I'm poor. You have $100 million. I have $100.
By ObamaLaw2015, we MUST invest in exactly the same way. For easy numbers, lets use a 10% rate of return.
After one year, you have $110 million. I have $110.
The "gap" between us grew by just under $10 million... even though we did EXACTLY the same thing!
The ONLY ways for this gap to shrink would be if vast amounts were taken from you evil rich guys, so much so that you gain nothing, or even start losing overall... or if we were both losing at the same rates (total economic decline).
Again, let the Right be VERY clear: The ONLY way the gap can shrink is for the "rich" to never gain a dollar, or for everyone to start losing money together... and in nether system can America's economy stand for very long... and this is what the Left is openly advocating for!!!!
Im beginning to believe that Solzhenitsyn
I believe in Alexander. The first one that breaks through my door gets an axe to the brain. Hopefully it will make them all think of going to work the next day.
Back to the 1970s!
“I pity New Yorkers , those of whom voted against this piece of pig excrement .”
I stopped pitying them when they let Bloomberg have a third term (by amending the laws); they should have voted him out. They reap what they sow...
That gap has actually been growing since the start of the industrial revolution. And you are correct...the only way to stop the gap is to stop growing the economy. What the gap-agenda people really are arguing for is a complete communist system.
When so the squeegee men start showing up at the Lincoln Tunnel when I’m commuting back to New Jersey?
All I know is that like the last time, the stupid Noooyawkas will move to New Jersey when they realize the horror show that NYC will become and then vote for the same kind of people here.
Because Nanny Big Gulp Bloomberg just wasn’t liberal enough...
NO! Let them stay, these assholes ruin every city with their evil political views then up and leave and flock to nice red states with lower crime and taxes only to start ruining everything there as well.
These leftest bastards are like locusts. Let them STAY in NYC and live with their mistake.
The exodus will begin now.
Noo Yawkers who miss the David Dinkens era will be happy with their new choice for mayor.
For everyone in NYC who wanted higher taxes and less law enforcement, enjoy what you wished for. For those who didn’t, get out while you can still sell your house for more than $1.
How long before the hookers, queers and druggies take Times Square over again??
Over the past 10 years I’ve taken several very nice overnight trips into the city. I don’t expect to be doing that again.
Um... Bloomberg might have had an “R” next to his name, but it was for show only.
From what I’ve seen of Bill, he doesn’t need a “D” next to his name... He needs a Hammer and Sickle.
NYC’s conversion to the next Detroit will now shift into high gear.
Again, one gets the Government they deserve. If the people of New York city and Virginia wish to live as animals. that is their privilege.
New Yorkers didn’t vote for a progressive who wants to close the income gap. They voted for a 6’5” handsome blond guy who has an interracial family and has convinced people he is Italian.
NYC has an income gap because it is made up of of Wall Street and the people who service it. It’s the only city like that. We already have the highest combined tax rate in the nation (state, city, federal combined) and de Blasio is going to try to make that worse, not to mention property taxes and sales taxes.
Thanks, dummy Democrats.
ON THE ROAD TO SERFDOM - 73% OF NEWYORKERS PUT THEIR DESTINY IN THE HANDS OF A COMMUNIST
“Posterity! you will never know how much it cost the present generation to preserve your freedom! I hope you will make a good use of it. If you do not, I shall repent in Heaven that I ever took half the pains to preserve it.” - John Adams, Letter to Abigail Adams, 1777
When you see that trading is done, not by consent, but by compulsion - when you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing - when you see that money is flowing to those who deal, not in goods, but in favors - when you see that men get richer by graft and by pull than by work, and your laws don’t protect you against them, but protect them against you - when you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a self-sacrifice - you may know that your society is doomed. AYN RAND
That happened during (and because of) the War Between the States. But for that, there'd be 49 States in the Union ... and only one Virginia.
