When new Police Chief Cecil Smith arrived in Sanford, Fla., in April, he suspended the city's neighborhood watch program — the one under whose auspices George Zimmerman had patrolled the streets until he fatally shot unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin. Now Smith is restarting the program, but the police department says it will exercise more control over volunteers, including doing background checks and asking them not to carry guns. "We just don't see the need for anybody to be armed," Smith told the Associated Press.
Smith has chosen to ask the volunteers rather than order them, perhaps because Florida law allows citizens to carry concealed weapons if they're properly permitted, as Zimmerman was. We wish he had gone further and told the volunteers that no one participating in the neighborhood watch program would be allowed to carry a gun — and that if they did they would be removed from the program.
No doubt Zimmerman was an aberration in the world of neighborhood watch volunteers: a pistol-packing cowboy who ignored advice from a 911 operator not to pursue Martin. But even if most volunteers are more responsible than Zimmerman, why do they need guns?(continued)

Brimming with fundamental falsehood, not one of those statements has withstood evidentiary analysis. The statement is prejudicial in nature and defames not only Zimmerman, but by association, anyone who embraces the tremendous responsibility to arm themselves to protect self, family, and neighbor without a badge or uniform to hide behind.
Don’t arm the insane. Don’t arm liberals. But I repeat myself.

BEWARE of any liberal who proposes ANYTHING starting with “common sense” or words to that effect, because, basically, they demonstrably don’t actually have any actual experience with it.

It’s one of a handful of remaining major metropolitan newspapers in the United States and is still read by many individuals. We need to care about what they are pushing.
Los Angeles is a great place to have an unarmed citizen watch program. Any volunteers?

I wouldn’t drink the water in LA. When you read this editorial, you know what it can do to the mind.
LA Times’ slogan should be “The mind is a terrible thing and we wasted ours”.
As the bodies keep piling up, just remember, a disarmed citizenry are sitting ducks for armed criminals.
You might want to pass that along to the LATimes editorial board, just in case they forgot.

Ok, my first thought was that the Chief of Police of Sanford was really, really trying to set up a new and obvious group of people as unarmed targets. That’s right... Become a Neighborhood Watchman, SPECIFICALLY looking for ‘Bad Guys’ committing crimes in the neighborhood and who are more than likely armed themselves.
Guess who will now have a much better chance when attacking their watchers while in near perfect safety and with the slow police response be long gone before the police arrive to put down the chalk lines around our knowingly unarmed Neighborhood Watch volunteer.
So can anyone tell me why I can already see lawsuits being prepared and waiting for the right names to be put in the blanks?

Hmm. I'd be happier if he'd tell the criminals and thugs that *they* are not allowed to carry guns. I'm sure they'll honor a simple request like that.
If Zimmerman had not been armed he would be dead... and none of this would have mattered to the press... or Obama, or Holder. If you have doubts look at some crime statistics.

The little sh*ts at the LA Times need to back up the “ pistol-packing cowboy” comment with a little more than their hatred of anyone who stands up to thin skinned thugs... and yeah, any of us here can back up our feelings about Trayvon... from his fights, suspensions, gang glorification, trouble with the law etc - - let’s see if the Times boys can do the same about Zimmerman. Back it up boys - add facts.
