Federal lawmakers and state officials are stepping up pressure on insurers to allow consumers whose coverage has been canceled in response to the health overhaul to keep their policies beyond the end of the year.
On Tuesday, one of the largest regional health plans in the nation, Blue Shield of California, said it would relax its stance on terminated policies for about 115,000 people after state regulators demanded it do so. Customers now will have until March to decide which plan to choose for 2014, a three-month extension. Because the newer plans generally cost more, the extension could save residents as much as $28.6 million on premiums, said Dave Jones, California's insurance commissioner.
"For 115,000 people, they get additional time to decide what's best for them and their families," he told reporters Tuesday. The California Department of Insurance is reviewing termination letters sent by other insurers in the state to decide whether other companies need to offer consumers similar extensions, Mr. Jones said.
The move by Mr. Jones, an elected Democrat, comes as some other Democrats are seeking ways to allow individual policyholders to keep their current health plans and to defuse the issue of canceled plans, which has become a headache for supporters of the law.
Cancellation letters are expected to be sent to as many as 10 million Americans who buy coverage directly from insurers, rather than through an employer or government program. While these individuals would have to buy new policies, regulators and lawmakers say the extensions would give them more time to shop for an affordable new planparticularly because continuing problems with insurance exchange websites are preventing many of these consumers from finding new coverage.

Fascism. Pure and simple - fascism.
Because Herr Obama says they can’t cancel them because it’s making him look bad.
It’s all about Obama. That’s all that matters in this country now.
Not just 'no', but 'HELL NO!' Don't let them do it to you. They are blaming their actions on you, and then asking you to make it OK for them. Screw 'em. Tell them you are living by their rules, and if they have a problem with it, then they need to do away with the rules that caused the problem to begin with.
Davy Jones is a dolt.
Did you really type that?
I had to disable Firefox's BS detector. Also note that even later in that sentence the insurance companies would have to bribe the Democrats to make sure those promises are kept.
Remember, you only can rent politicians... they aren't honest enough to stay bought.
The insurance companies, like everybody else in this country, are both confused and scared. They probably thought they were going to make an easy bundle by “administering” Obamacare, but I think that this is way beyond anything they imagined and now they are probably seriously worried about having their business nationalized out from under them.
So, the same people who made this the law are now asking the insurance companies to violate it??
Your statement is spot on.
saving money by not spending it until later even though what you are forced to buy costs more than what you have even though it’s “better” for you than you’ll ever know.
The fun is going to start when people with subsidized policies find out about deductibles and getting the insurance company to pay for stuff.
The medical support system is going to be overwhelmed with the new Medicaid recipients getting all of their free stuff and then newly insured getting whatever they can because "it's covered".
And the insurance companies? The longer it is before their customers can be forced into more expensive policies, the more money they'll lose.
Meanwhile, for us average folk, for all pratical purposes good medical care when you really need it is just about over. Heal thyself.
The insurance companies are now getting it good and hard for being in bed with Obama.
They’ll now be thrown under the bus where they belong by the malignant narcissist.
“Can anyone here explain what this means? How can they extend them?”
They can’t. I think this is deliberately obfuscatory reporting. The part about “newer plans” “saving” money gives it away. I suspect that what is really going on is that the insurance company was extorted into GIVING a KommieKare-compliant plan at the OLD rate until March 2014 to those who were cancelled.
The savings is obviously how much more KommieKare-compliant plans cost compared to the cancelled plans.
I’m thinking the market reaction to Obamacare is happening faster than anticipated, and is resulting in backfire.
Just wait for all the “glitches” when your insurance company that cancelled your current and you sign up for their new “market place” plan. Computer heads will explode with all the confusion. Billing errors, payment errors, coverage errors, duplications, yada, yada, yada.
because state regulate the Insurance in their state, the Feds have zero right!!! but you know the rest
“So, the same people who made this the law are now asking the insurance companies to violate it??”
“Trust us. It won’t come back to bite you in the ass. No one will come after you. Period.”
“Can anyone here explain what this means?”
Its crazy. I got a letter on Oct 2nd giving me their best guess explanation of how my insurance is changing. I got a follow up letter on Oct 22nd, with what appeared to be a change to my original contract (signed on their end but not mine) telling me they changed my policy year “anniversary date.” It actually benefits me, because it extends my policy through 12/1/14, so it has my blessing.
Everyone is making everything up as they go along. I can believe they would now send another letter offering me an extension of my original policy.
I suspect the insurance companies are supporting this new effort. They are seeing the mounting losses for 2014. The biggest problem they now have is that people like me, who never file a claim and use them as “asset insurance”, have already made our decisions. They snooze, they lose. After 12/1/14, I will never send another dime to Blue Cross. I am protesting their ignorance in supporting the ACA.
