For centuries, it has been common for men in Russias southern regions to kidnap the woman they want to marry, a ritual known as bride stealing. And despite amounting to a major felony, the local custom is still widely tolerated. That tension between Russian law and local tradition was on display on Nov. 4, Russias National Unity Day, when the Kremlin-appointed leader of the region of Ingushetia called on his tiny, mountainous republic to preserve its historic traditions and cultural values. What President Yunus-Bek Yevkurov failed to mention was how much trouble the tradition of bride stealing has caused his region (or at least its women) over the past week and a half. On Oct. 26, two prominent family clans in Ingushetia staged a shootout in broad daylight over the repeated kidnapping of 21-year-old Khagi Yevloeva. Over the course of this year, Yevloeva had been abducted three times by a persistent suitor from a neighboring clan, the Aushevs, but each time her relatives had managed to find her and take her back. Among the incidents other similarities to the Wild West, the meeting was reportedly scheduled for high noon.

Never Bring A Club To A Gun Fight
So this isn’t just like Seven Brides for Seven Brothers?

The only mention that this region is mainly Islamic is where the clerics get together and say that bride stealing violates Sharia as well as Russian law. But I kind of doubt how much they really meant it.
I want the movie...
The only rule is that there are no rules.
Pamla Anderson really? I am betting within 48 hrs. you have that harpy back in the sack and be head for the highest bridge over the deepest water you could find!!!

That must have been about 30 years ago.
Not me. That’s who Borat went after with the “Marriage Sack” in the movie.
I never intimated that Borat had good taste, no.
Most ethnic groups have a history of this type of thing at some point. My daughter is a wedding videographer and has done a number of Romanian weddings. A key feature is a prearranged “kidnapping” of the bride.
It is even claimed that the wedding ring is a relic of the bonds used to control the bride when kidnapping her.
This is not a common practice in most Muslim areas.
This is only a couple of hundred miles from Sochi. Lot’s of fetching prospective “brides” will be there soon.
The Beslan school massacre was perpetrated by a mixed gang of Ingush and Chechans.
But it’s still OK to have sex with goats as long as you don’t steal them.
