To be completely correct ch 59 is a Fox affiliate but owned by Tribune Co.
It didn’t come up in conversation. I know you’re just curious, but I’m not sure what that has to do with it. Whether the perps were white, black or whatever, they’re f-ing thugs. The rape and robbery were no less traumatic for the victim regardless of their race.
A FReeper suggested to me to use a steel door with a dead bolt that can’t be kicked in as your bedroom door to create a safe room where you can retreat in case of home invasion. Make sure a working phone is in there and a gun.
I told DH and he thinks it’s a great idea — and will be looking to install a steel door with a dead bolt. Already have guns, loaded and ready, in the bedroom.

If the victims are white, it’s a hate crime.
True that these guys are thugs regardless of the race of the victim and true that this horrific event was traumatic for the victims regardless of their race. It's also true, though, that if the victims are white and the perpetrator are black the media often hides the parties' races and relegates the story to local news. Exactly like we see here.
If numerous white guys busted into a black home, howver, and repeatedly raped the mother and daughter (this, of course, never happens), the media would make the parties races an integral part of the story and the story would be national news. Further, nearly all black Americans would care more about the story under those circumstances, so I fail to see why it's wrong for a white person to express more concern when the victims are white and the perpetrators are black like we are seeing more and more as time passes.

A simple Rubber Wedge Door Stop is all that’s needed to make opening your door quite difficult.
Through sheetrock? Seconds. Through framing...a bit longer.
I suppose metal plate, or brick, or even heavy plywood, in the associated walls will be helpful too. Nothing perfect, but with intruders in a hurry they may not want to take the time to bust through walls.
Might not need a super secure door, something of normal outer door strength would probably suffice, if the room will be actively defended.

In general I agree that a tactical (short barrel, no choke) shotgun makes a fine home defense weapon. I would caution however that the spread pattern of the shot is not what you might think. Across a big room, say 20 feet or so, a 00Buck shell will put ALL nine of its shot through one big impressive hole in the wall. It won't spread at all. Even #6 bird shot won't spread out much at those close sorts of ranges. Think dinner plate, not door width. There are trade-offs. Bird shot might not bring down the bad guy with one shot, but they tend not to over-penetrate either and will probably stay in your house. 00 buck will drop a perp more reliably (very reliably) but also will exit through walls and pay a visit to your neighbor's house.
